External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar held discussions with Philemon Yang, the President of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), in New Delhi on Wednesday. The talks focused on various items on the UN agenda, including the need for reformed multilateralism. Jaishankar shared on social media that they exchanged views on regional, global, and developmental challenges.
Yang arrived in India on Tuesday for a four-day visit at the invitation of Jaishankar. He will also meet with President Droupadi Murmu, reinforcing India’s relationship with the United Nations. Jaishankar praised Yang’s leadership at the UN and emphasized the value of his guidance.
As part of his visit, Yang will travel to Bengaluru, where he will visit Infosys and the Indian Institute of Science. There, he will engage with experts on India’s contributions to sustainability, digital infrastructure, and innovation, according to the Ministry of External Affairs.
During his tenure, Yang has led efforts at the UN, including the adoption of “A Pact for the Future,” a document advocating for multilateral solutions to global challenges. Previously Cameroon’s Prime Minister, Yang has long been an advocate for global unity and peace, and he commended India’s efforts in advancing the interests of the Global South during his meeting with Jaishankar.
