Free health camp for elderly held at Pattan

Pattan, May 22: A free health camp dedicated to the well-being of senior citizens was successfully organized by Moul Mouj Foundation in collaboration with the Help Foundation at the Help Foundation office in Pattan. The initiative witnessed an overwhelming response, with more than 105 elderly individuals receiving free medical consultations, blood investigations, and essential medications.

During the camp, four elderly patients were diagnosed with diabetes for the first time, while many others were found to be undertreated for chronic conditions, said a press release. Appropriate adjustments in their medication dosages were made on the spot to ensure better disease management, it said.

Participants also received awareness on summer care, focusing on hydration, nutrition, and precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses. Speaking on the occasion, Dr Zubair Saleem, Senior Geriatric Consultant, emphasised that summer poses special risks for seniors due to reduced thirst, multiple medications, and slower heat regulation. He advised staying well-hydrated with 8–10 glasses of water daily, along with natural fluids like lassi or coconut water, while avoiding caffeine and sugary drinks. Seniors should avoid going out during peak heat hours (11 am to 4 pm), and if needed, step out only in the morning or evening with protective clothing like cotton scarves or hats. Dr Zubair stressed the importance of proper medication storage, regular review of dosages—especially for BP and heart medicines—and being alert to signs of dehydration or dizziness. He recommended light, frequent meals with fruits, vegetables, and curd while avoiding oily, heavy foods. At home, rooms should be well-ventilated with fans or coolers, and wet towels can help during power cuts. Wearing loose, light-colored clothing, using sunscreen, and checking for skin issues was also advised. Nighat Shafi Pandit, Chairperson of Help Foundation, who was present at the camp, said, “This camp is not just about treating elders, but also about empowering them with awareness and preventive strategies to live healthier, more informed lives.” The camp was supported by students of Bibi Halima Nursing College, who are currently undergoing their internship at Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies on Ageing, Moul Mouj Foundation.

The elderly attendees expressed deep satisfaction with the initiative, appreciating both the medical services and the valuable health education provided during the camp.
