World Heart Day: GMC Anantnag organises 8-km walkathon from MMABM Hospital to main campus

Anantnag, Sep 30: Government Medical College (GMC) Anantnag organised an eight-kilometre “Walkathon” from MMABM Hospital to the main campus at Dialgam on the occasion of World Heart Day, celebrated every year on September 29.

The walkathon witnessed a large gathering of citizens, doctors, and students from various schools. It commenced at 7 am from Government MMABM Hospital, Janglatmandi, and concluded at the main campus, Dialgam.

Speaking on the occasion, Principal GMC Anantnag prof Dr Rukhsana Najeeb highlighted the importance of the day and encouraged people to adhere to lifestyle modification.

This was followed by speeches from Dr Syed Maqbool incharge/head and other senior cardiologists including Dr Shamim iqbal, Dr Showkat shah and Dr Shahood kakroo.

The cardiologists at the event emphasised the importance of active lifestyles, preventive cardiac care, and recognition of symptoms to reduce the risk of premature cardiac deaths.

They particularly stressed smoking cessation, weight management, reducing psychosocial stress, healthy eating, and regular exercise.

Notably, World Heart Day, observed every year on September 29, is a global initiative by the World Heart Federation to raise awareness about cardiovascular diseases and promote heart-healthy living. The day highlights the importance of early detection, regular check-ups, and equitable access to cardiovascular care worldwide.
