Sopore, Oct 03: As part of the ongoing crackdown on drug trafficking across Jammu and Kashmir, Sopore Police have booked two habitual drug peddlers under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (PIT NDPS Act), officials said on Friday.

In a statement, a police spokesperson identified the accused as Umar Farooq Sheikh S/O Farooq Ahmad Sheikh R/O Seeloo Sopore – lodged in Kot Bhalwal Jail, Jammu and Abdul Hamid Mir S/O Abdul Rashid Mir R/O Janwara Sopore – lodged in District Jail, Poonch.

Both are repeat offenders with multiple NDPS cases against them. Despite repeated preventive actions, they continued to indulge in the narcotics trade, posing a persistent threat to public health and safety, he said.

Sopore Police is maintaining strict surveillance on such repeat offenders and many more are being identified, tracked, and will be booked under PIT NDPS in the coming days. All necessary measures will be taken to uproot the drug menace from Sopore, he added.

Police said that in the last 4 days, they have booked 6 repeat offenders under PIT NDPS and arrested 6 others in 3 separate FIRs under the NDPS Act with recovery of contraband.

Sopore Police reiterates its zero-tolerance policy towards narcotics and urges the public to remain vigilant, report drug-related activities, and join hands in the mission to build a drug-free Sopore.
