PM Modi, Home Minister condole passing of architect of the Statue of Unity

New Delhi, Dec 18: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday expressed deep grief over the passing of sculptor Ram Sutar, hailing his immense contribution to Indian art and heritage.

Both leaders paid tribute to the celebrated artist, best known as the architect of the Statue of Unity, and acknowledged his lasting legacy in shaping some of India’s most iconic landmarks. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a message posted on X, said Ram Sutar’s creations would always be admired as powerful expressions of India’s history, culture and collective spirit, adding that he had “immortalised national pride for generations to come”.

PM Modi extended his heartfelt condolences to the sculptor’s family, admirers and all those influenced by his life and work.

Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah described it as an irreparable loss to Indian art. In his tribute, Amit Shah said the celebrated sculptor played a crucial role in preserving India’s cultural heritage, including his contributions to the restoration of the Ajanta and Ellora sculptures, and noted that his work would continue to inspire future generations.
