SKUAST-K trains women in agroforestry to boost food security, income

Ganderbal, Jan 19: The Faculty of Forestry, Benhama–Ganderbal, Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir (SKUAST-K), on Monday launched a seven-day Entrepreneurship Skill Development Programme (ESDP) aimed at empowering women through agroforestry-based home gardens to enhance food security and income.

The training programme is sponsored by the Ministry of MSME, Government of India. The inaugural session was attended by Dr A. Arunachalam, Director, ICAR–CAFRI; Dr M. K. Verma, Director, ICAR–CITH; and Dr H. R. Naik, Director Research, SKUAST-K. The speakers highlighted the role of agroforestry in promoting climate-resilient farming and stressed the importance of women-led initiatives in sustainable agriculture.

Programme Coordinator Dr Megna Rashid briefed participants on the objectives of the training, emphasising the role of agroforestry-based home gardens in strengthening livelihoods and improving climate resilience among women.

Dean, Faculty of Forestry, Dr Arshad H. Mughal said agroforestry, even on marginal lands, can be profitable and sustainable by improving soil health, conserving moisture, enhancing biodiversity and generating multiple livelihood opportunities. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks.
