Ganderbal Police issue advisory after avalanche hits Sonamarg

Ganderbal, Jan 28: Ganderbal Police on Wednesday issued an advisory, urging general public, tourists and transporters to strictly avoid visiting or halting in avalanche-prone areas. The advisory comes after an avalanche hit New Truck Yard, Sonamarg, last night around 10:15 pm.

According to officials, the impact of the avalanche was minimal and no loss of life or property has been reported. Police team along with SDRF timely reported in the area to assess the situation.

The official said that concerned agencies are closely monitoring the situation, and precautionary measures are being kept in place to ensure public safety in the region.

The police in an advisory issued urged general public, tourists and transporters to avoid visiting or halting in avalanche-prone areas. It said the chances of avalanches remain very high, and unnecessary movement in vulnerable zones can pose serious risks.

“People are urged to follow official advisories, cooperate with local authorities, and prioritize safety while traveling through the Sonamarg axis and adjoining areas,” advisory reads.

Ganderbal Police remain committed to the safety and well-being of the public and request everyone to stay alert and act responsibly, it added.
