Sopore, Feb 4: Sopore and the wider North Kashmir region were plunged into mourning following the passing of Dr Haji Attiqullah, a highly respected physician and social figure fondly known as Dr Ali Jan.
Revered for his decades-long service to humanity, Dr Attiqullah’s death has been described as an irreparable loss to the region’s medical and social fabric.
Residents paid rich tributes, remembering him not only as a skilled doctor but as a compassionate humanitarian who dedicated his life to serving the poor, the sick and the marginalised. “He was the embodiment of humility and empathy. His commitment to the medical profession and to society was unparalleled,” locals said while recalling his tireless service.
Dr Attiqullah was widely regarded as a pioneer of healthcare in North Kashmir. Known for his round-the-clock availability, he earned immense respect for ensuring that quality medical care remained accessible to all, regardless of social or economic status. Many recalled his rare human touch and personal concern for patients, particularly those from underprivileged backgrounds.
Condolences poured in from across the region, with doctors, educationists, civil society members, social workers and political representatives expressing deep grief over his demise. Speakers noted that Dr Attiqullah played a pivotal role in strengthening healthcare services in Sopore and adjoining areas, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to guide future generations.
Prayers were offered for eternal peace to the departed soul, with mourners appealing to Almighty Allah to grant him the highest place in Jannat-ul-Firdous and to bestow patience and strength upon the bereaved family.
Meanwhile, hundreds of people from Sopore and neighbouring areas participated in the funeral prayers of the late Dr Attiqullah, held at the Old Eidgah, Iqbal Market, on Wednesday evening. The large turnout reflected the deep respect and affection he commanded, as people from all walks of life gathered to bid farewell to a physician whose life was synonymous with service, compassion and humanity.
