Srinagar, Feb 7: The Jammu and Kashmir government on Saturday informed the Legislative Assembly that 57 sports associations are registered with the J&K Sports Council, while no sports committees have been recognised by the council.

This was stated in a written reply by the minister in-charge for J&K Youth Service and Sports Department, Satish Sharma, to a question raised by the MLA Devinder Kumar Manyal.

Manyal sought the details from the government about the existing recognised sports committees and Associations, recognised in their respective disciplines.

“There is no recognised sports committee however there are 57 sports associations registered with the J&K Sports Council,” the written reply reads.

About the selection of players for sports competitions at the school, college and university level, the government informed the House that the selection of players for sports competitions is undertaken from the school level.

The minister said that advance dates, venues, age groups and eligibility criteria for the competitions and selection trials are issued, while eligibility and verification of age, besides categories, are also done as well.

“The process is done before participation, and their credentials are verified during the competitions/selection trials. Open and transparent trials by qualified coaches and technical experts as per the prescribed norms of the concerned sports discipline are conducted,” the reply reads.

The House was informed that criteria of skill, fitness, technique and past performance records are assessed as well. “Discipline-wise merit lists based strictly on performance and eligibility are prepared and disclosed on the spot,” it reads.

The government also displayed the list of the sports persons selected for various national and international level sports events from Jammu Division during the year 2025-26.

“Further, 1159 sports persons at school level were selected for various national sports events from Jammu Division during the year 2025-26,” the reply reads.

The government said the games like volleyball, football, kabaddi, kho-kho, athletics, and chess were promoted across J&K as per the calendar.

The government said that the Youth Service and Sports department was actively promoting a wide range of sports and games across J&K, including Samba District, with the objective of encouraging youth participation and fostering a strong sporting culture at the grass-roots level.

“Regular coaching camps, district-level competitions and talent identification programmes are being held in collaboration with concerned recognised sports associations,” it reads.

The government further informed that the employment benefits were also provided to the sports persons from J&K including Jammu division who  have represented Jammu and Kashmir at national and international level under the provisions of J&K (Appointment of outstanding  sportspersons) rules, 2022.

“The approval of the competent authority has been obtained to finalise the recruitment process of the outstanding sports persons. The order in this regard shall be issued soon after completing the pre-requisite formalities,” the written reply from the government reads.
