Ramban, Feb 8: The Srinagar–Jammu National Highway (NH-44) remained open on Sunday for two-way traffic of light and medium passenger vehicles, while heavy motor vehicles (HMVs) were allowed to move in one direction towards Kashmir, traffic authorities said.
Officials stated that, subject to fair weather and good road conditions, light motor vehicles (LMVs), including passenger vehicles, will be permitted to ply from both sides—Jammu to Srinagar and vice versa—on Monday as well. Heavy motor vehicles will continue to be allowed on a One-Way basis.
Earlier traffic authorities observed slow movement on NH-44 due to single-lane stretches between Marog and Kishtwari Pather, along with the breakdown of a few heavy vehicles. They added that a 20–30 metre single-lane stretch at Kishtwari Pather, caused by road subsidence, has necessitated the movement of HMVs on alternate days.
Passengers and LMV operators have been advised to undertake travel on the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway during daytime hours. Night travel is discouraged due to the risk of shooting stones, landslides, and ongoing construction work between Ramban and Banihal. Additionally, frost formation between Nachlana and the Navyug Tunnel, following recent snowfall, may result in slippery road conditions. Commuters have been urged to maintain lane discipline, warning that overtaking and wrong-lane driving could lead to traffic congestion.
Officials said that HMVs may be allowed from Jammu towards Srinagar only after assessing road and traffic conditions. The Traffic Control Unit (TCU) Srinagar will coordinate with TCU Ramban before releasing such traffic. Meanwhile, the Kishtwar–Sinthan–Anantnag National Highway (NH-244) remains closed for vehicular movement due to heavy snow accumulation. People have been advised to plan their journeys only after confirming the latest road status from Traffic Control Units at Jammu, Srinagar, Udhampur, and Ramban.
