Kochrab Ashram continues to spread Gandhian philosophy

Jammu, Feb 23: The historic Kochrab Satyagraha Ashram in Ahmedabad continues to attract visitors, scholars and historians from across India and abroad, carrying forward the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi. A team from Greater Kashmir visited the Ashram during an exposure tour for journalists organised by the Press Information Bureau (PIB) Jammu. Established in 1915, soon after Gandhi’s return from South Africa, Kochrab was the first ashram founded by him in India and became the starting point for several socio-political movements linked to the freedom struggle.

The Ashram is currently overseen by its Director, Dr Prasana Gandhi, who said the site continues to witness steady footfall. “A large number of people are visiting the Ashram on a daily basis, and even international historians frequent the place,” he said. Describing the Ashram as a living symbol of Gandhian values, he added that the rooms, including Gandhi’s living quarters, meeting hall and kitchen, reflect the simplicity and discipline that defined his way of life.

Dr Gandhi stressed the importance of taking the Gandhian philosophy to the younger generation. He described it as “a timeless guide for truth, non-violence and ethical living,” urging people to learn from and promote its principles. Recognised as a national monument, the Ashram has recently undergone renovation and upgradation to improve visitor experience while preserving its historic character.
