Srinagar, Jun 3: In a significant advancement in emergency cardiopulmonary care, Ujala Cygnus Hospitals, in partnership with Amandeep BR Medicity, Srinagar, has established J&K’s first Pulmonary Embolism Response Team (PERT), a dedicated multidisciplinary team designed to provide rapid diagnosis and advanced treatment for patients suffering from Acute Pulmonary Embolism (PE), a potentially life-threatening condition caused by blockage of the pulmonary arteries by blood clots.
The newly formed PERT brings together specialists from multiple disciplines to ensure timely, evidence-based, and coordinated care, and comprises Dr Shais Jallu, Sr Consultant Pulmonology & Head Critical Care, Dr Waseem Ahmed, Sr Consultant and HOD Interventional Cardiology, Dr Showkat Ahmad Banday, Sr Consultant Interventional Radiology, Dr Danish Amin Khan, Sr Consultant Radiologist, along with the anaesthesia team and emergency team.
Acute Pulmonary Embolism is a medical emergency that can lead to sudden deterioration, heart failure, and death if not recognized and treated promptly, with common symptoms including sudden onset shortness of breath, chest pain particularly on deep breathing, rapid heartbeat or palpitations, unexplained dizziness or fainting, cough sometimes with blood-stained sputum, and swelling or pain in the legs due to deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Unfortunately, these symptoms are often mistaken for other conditions, leading to delays in diagnosis and treatment, whereas early recognition and prompt medical attention can significantly improve outcomes and save lives. The PERT model has been successfully adopted in leading centres worldwide and enables specialists to rapidly assess each patient and formulate an individualized treatment strategy, with treatment options including anticoagulation, catheter-directed thrombolysis, mechanical thrombectomy, surgical pulmonary embolectomy, and advanced hemodynamic support depending on the severity of the clot burden and the patient’s condition.
Dr. Amandeep Kaur, Director, Amandeep BR Medicity, said, “Acute Pulmonary Embolism demands immediate, coordinated action because delays can be fatal. With J&K’s first PERT, launched in partnership with Ujala Cygnus Hospitals, we have built a system where critical decisions are made in real time by experts across specialties. This initiative reflects our shared vision to bring world-class emergency cardiopulmonary care to J&K and ensure that no life is lost due to lack of timely intervention. Together, we are raising the standard of care for patients in the region.”
Speaking on the occasion, the PERT team emphasized that a coordinated multidisciplinary approach is crucial in managing acute pulmonary embolism, particularly in high-risk and critically ill patients, and the establishment of J&K’s first PERT represents a major step forward in providing comprehensive, state-of-the-art care for this frequently underdiagnosed condition.
With round-the-clock availability of advanced imaging, interventional cardiology, interventional radiology, cardiac surgery, critical care, and anaesthesia services, Ujala Cygnus Hospitals, in partnership with Amandeep BR Medicity, is now uniquely positioned to offer rapid and comprehensive management of acute pulmonary embolism, improving survival and reducing long-term complications. The launch of J&K’s first PERT underscores the joint commitment of Ujala Cygnus and Amandeep BR Medicity to bring cutting-edge cardiopulmonary and emergency care services to the people of J&K and neighbouring regions.
