Victoria (Seychelles), Jun 28: Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on Sunday conferred the prestigious ‘Guardian of the Blue Horizon’ Presidential Distinction by Seychelles President Dr. Patrick Herminie in recognition of his global leadership on climate action, environmental conservation and promotion of the Blue Economy.
The honour, being bestowed for the first time, recognises PM Modi’s efforts in advancing the interests of developing countries and his longstanding commitment to sustainable management of ocean resources, climate action and the developmental aspirations of Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
Receiving the award at a special ceremony, the Prime Minister dedicated the honour to all countries working to protect the environment and combat climate change.
“It is a matter of immense joy for me and 1.4 billion Indians to be honoured with the title of ‘Guardian of the Blue Horizon’. I humbly accept this honour and dedicate it to all those countries that are fighting the challenge of climate change and consider environmental protection their responsibility towards future generations,” PM Modi said.
He said the recognition, coming as India and Seychelles celebrate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties, would further strengthen the special friendship between the two nations.
The distinction acknowledges PM Modi’s initiatives towards building a greener planet, including the International Solar Alliance, Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment), Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam, and the International Big Cat Alliance.
The honour adds to a series of international recognitions conferred on the Prime Minister for promoting sustainable development, including the FAO’s Agricola Medal, the Seoul Peace Prize, and the United Nations’ Champion of the Earth Award.
The award also reflects Seychelles’ appreciation of India’s growing role as a trusted partner in capacity building, environmental protection, sustainable development and advancing shared priorities across the Indian Ocean Region.
