New Delhi, Jul 9: The funeral procession of Iran’s former Supreme Leader late Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei began in the northeastern holy city of Mashhad on Thursday, marking the final stage of six days of national mourning, Iran’s official IRNA news agency reported.
According to IRNA, political representatives from more than 45 countries, along with scholars, religious leaders and scientists from over 90 nations, participated in the farewell ceremonies that began on July 3. Following funeral events in Tehran, Qom and the Iraqi holy cities of Najaf and Karbala, Khamenei’s body will be laid to rest beside the shrine of Imam Reza in Mashhad, his birthplace.
Ayatollah Khamenei was assassinated in a US-Israeli airstrike on February 28.
