Machine operator killed after excavator plunges into gorge in Ramban

Banihal, Jul 14: A machine operator was killed after an L&T excavator he was operating for a road construction project skidded off the road and plunged into a deep gorge in Ramban district on Monday evening, police said.

The accident occurred in the Gajpath Qillah area under the jurisdiction of Chanderkote Police Station. According to police, information about the incident was received at around 8:30 p.m., following which a rescue operation was immediately launched by Ramban Police with the assistance of Civil Quick Response Team (QRT) volunteers .

Police officials said the excavator rolled down the gorge, trapping the operator beneath the heavily damaged machine. After strenuous efforts, rescuers used a JCB machine to lift the wreckage and retrieve the body.

The deceased was identified as Akhtar Hussain, son of Hussain Khanday, a resident of Kahara in Doda district.

The body was shifted to the District Hospital Ramban for medico-legal formalities.

Police have registered a case and initiated an investigation to ascertain the exact cause of the accident.
