Srinagar, July 22: A policeman was killed after terrorists fired upon a Special Operations Group (SOG) team in the Lal Chowk area of Anantnag town in south Kashmir on Wednesday afternoon.
DIG Javed Mattoo told Greater Kashmir that the SOG team went to area following inputs about the presence of inimical elements. “As the team reached the area, the hiding terrorists opened fire on the personnel, leaving a constable injured.”
He said the injured constable was immediately moved to a hospital, where he succumbed.
The slain constable was identified as Ashiq Hussain, a resident of Beerwah in central Kashmir’s Budgam district.
Mattoo said a massive cordon-and-search operation is currently underway in the area as security forces hunt for the assailants.
Lal Chowk, a prominent commercial hub in Anantnag, has witnessed heightened security measures in recent times amid ongoing counter-terrorism efforts in south Kashmir.
