Baramulla, Jul 23: A massive cloudburst struck Maya village in the Uri sector of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Thursday afternoon, triggering a sudden surge in the water level of the local stream.
Following the cloudburst, vulnerable residents were asked to immediately shift to safer places as a precautionary measure.
Officials said the cloudburst led to a sharp rise in the discharge of the Maya stream, raising fears of flash flooding in low-lying areas close to its banks.
Soon after receiving information about the incident, teams from Jammu and Kashmir Police, the tehsil administration, the Army, and the Health Department rushed to the village to monitor the situation and coordinate relief measures.
Police personnel used public address systems to alert residents living near the stream, asking them to immediately move to safer locations.
Vehicles were arranged by the administration to facilitate the evacuation of families from vulnerable areas.
“The evacuation was carried out as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of residents in view of the sudden rise in the water level,” an official said.
Authorities remained on the ground to assess the situation and kept a close watch on the stream, while emergency response teams stayed on standby in case water levels rose again.
Officials said there were no reports of loss of life, injuries, or damage to property.
They said that the water level in the stream had started receding after the initial surge, bringing some relief to residents.
The administration has urged people living near water bodies to remain alert and follow advisories issued by the authorities, as intermittent rainfall continues across the region.
