Jan Suraaj Party chief Prashant Kishor won the Bankipur Assembly bypoll on Monday, defeating the BJP candidate and ending the party’s decades-long hold over the prestigious constituency, The Times of India (TOI) reported.
According to the Election Commission figures after 29 rounds of counting, Kishor secured 61,075 votes, leading BJP candidate Neeraj Kumar, who polled 42,111 votes, by 18,964 votes. RJD candidate Rekha Kumari finished third with 13,625 votes.
Speaking after his victory, Prashant Kishor said the result was more than the election of an MLA and described it as a message to the BJP leadership, TOI reported.
Referring to the BJP’s long dominance in the constituency, he said, “The 30-year stronghold fell in 30 days,” and stressed that Bihar needs leadership focused on education, employment and stopping migration from the state. Kishor thanked the voters for their support and said he would also work to win the confidence of those who did not vote for him.
