Poonch, Aug 04: A 66-year-old woman died after being swept away by a local stream in the Gagdyan-Sawjian area of Mandi tehsil in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district, officials said.

The deceased has been identified as Sarwara Begum, wife of Mukhtar Ahmad and a resident of Dana Gagdyan. She was reportedly washed away by the stream on Monday. Her body was recovered on Tuesday morning from the Chambar Dati Galla river, around seven kilometres from Gagdyan, with the assistance of police and local residents.

Amit Choudhary, in-charge of the Sawjian police post, said the deceased’s family had informed police that she had left home but did not return. Following the report, police, along with local residents, launched a search and rescue operation.

“The body was recovered this morning from the Chambar Dati Galla river,” the officer said.

After recovery, the body was shifted to the Sub-District Hospital, Mandi, where medico-legal formalities were completed before it was handed over to the family for the last rites.

Police have registered a case and initiated further investigation into the incident.
