Young people in Kashmir are already closely connected with the digital world. Smartphones, online videos, social media and mobile games have become part of everyday life for students and young adults, yet gaming is still discussed mostly as a form of entertainment. There is another side to it that deserves more attention: the possibility that some of the young people who enjoy playing games today could also learn how to develop them.

Game development is no longer limited to large companies or professional studios located in major technology centres. With online courses, tutorials and easily available development tools, students can now begin learning programming, animation, 3D design, sound, interface design and other skills from home. A capable computer, regular practice and patience are enough to start experimenting with small projects, which creates an interesting opportunity for Kashmir’s young generation.

From interest to practical skills

Game development is often associated mainly with coding, but even a simple game usually requires a combination of different skills. Programming is needed to make the game function, while artists may work on characters, backgrounds and environments. Other parts of the project can involve animation, sound, level design, menus, user interfaces and testing, which means that students with different interests can find a place within the same field.

This makes game development particularly useful for young people who are still trying to understand which area of technology or digital design suits them best. A student who begins by learning programming may later discover a stronger interest in animation or 3D modelling, while someone who enjoys visual design may move towards user-interface work. In September 2025, Srinagar hosted Daydream Srinagar, a two-day game jam for students aged 13 to 18, where participants attended beginner-friendly workshops, formed teams and built their own games. The event was affiliated with Hack Club and was described by the organisers as Kashmir’s largest student-led coding event of its kind.

There are other signs of interest as well. TechKnow 2025 at Delhi Public School Srinagar brought together students from more than 30 schools across the Valley for workshops covering areas such as artificial intelligence, app development, programming, web development, graphic design and game development. These examples may still be limited, but they show that there is already a base of young people in Kashmir who are willing to explore technology beyond normal classroom learning.

The next step is to make students more aware that such skills do not have to remain limited to competitions, workshops or school projects. A student who develops one small game can improve it, work on another project and gradually build practical experience. Over time, what begins as an experiment can become a useful skill and, for some, even the beginning of a career.

Kashmir can also become a place for digital development

A large part of the digital content consumed in Kashmir is created outside the region, and games are no different. Young people regularly play titles developed in other parts of India and across the world, but there is no reason why Kashmiri developers cannot become part of the same industry.

A game created by someone in Kashmir does not necessarily need to be about Kashmir. A local developer may choose to create a racing game, a puzzle game, a sports game or something completely fictional for players anywhere in the world. At the same time, there is also room for original ideas inspired by the Valley itself. Kashmir has its own landscapes, winters, architecture, stories, traditions and everyday experiences, all of which could provide inspiration for developers who want to create something rooted in the region.

One of the biggest advantages of digital products is that the market is not restricted to the place where the product is created. A game developed in Srinagar, Anantnag, Baramulla or any other part of Kashmir can be played by someone sitting thousands of kilometres away. For young people in the region, this means that location does not have to decide the size of the audience they can eventually reach.

Creating a game is only one part of the journey

For beginners, one of the biggest difficulties often appears after the game has been completed. A student may successfully create a small project but still have no clear idea where to publish it or how to put it in front of people beyond friends and classmates.

That may still be necessary for some opportunities, but digital work has reduced this dependence considerably. A student can learn in Kashmir, develop projects in Kashmir and publish them for an audience outside the region, while a strong portfolio can also be shared with companies or clients located elsewhere.

Not everyone who experiments with game development will eventually work in gaming, and that should not be seen as a failure. Some may move towards software engineering, animation, design, 3D art or other technical and creative fields. The experience of building games can still help because it brings several skills together around a finished product and requires students to solve practical problems rather than only study them in theory.

From players to developers

Kashmir already has a generation of young people who are comfortable with digital technology. The next stage should be to encourage more of them to understand how the products they use every day are actually made and to consider creating something of their own.

Game development can offer one such path because it combines technology with creativity and allows students to turn their skills into practical projects.
