‘New York is no courtroom for India’s Muslims’: Grand Mufti J&K

Srinagar, Sep 01: Jammu and Kashmir Grand Mufti Nasir-ul-Islam on Tueday said matters concerning the social harmony, citizenship and national character of India are best addressed on Indian soil, among Indians, and within the constitutional framework of the country, adding that ‘New York (capital of USA) is no courtroom for India’s Muslims.

“The remarks of RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat concerning Muslims in New York raise a fundamental question: why should the conduct and standing of Indian Muslims be discussed in New York at all?” the Grand Mufti said, adding that “If such questions are raised in India, we will respond with facts, dignity and full confidence.”

He said  Muslims in India, in proportion to the population of the country, have made an equal and enduring contribution to India’s sovereignty, dignity, freedom struggle and national life.

Indian Muslims do not seek certificates of patriotism from anyone, he said, “Our sacrifices, service and commitment to the nation are woven into the history of India.”

Isalm said India belongs equally to every citizen irrespective of religion, region or language. India’s strength lies not in questioning the loyalty of one community, but in recognising that the Republic was built through the collective sacrifices of all its people.

“We (Indian Muslims) therefore appeal to every responsible public voice to speak with restraint and wisdom. Let us debate ideas on Indian soil, uphold constitutional morality, and strengthen the fraternity that binds 1.4 billion Indians together.

Nasir-ul-Islam said that the Muslim community is an integral part of India’s past, present and future and that the patriotism of Muslims is not a subject for debate abroad.

“Our (India’s Muslims) contribution to India is a matter of history,” the Grand Mufti said
