Banihal, Sep 19: Indian Railways is expected to introduce Roll-On/Roll-Off (RORO) freight services from Kashmir to other parts of the country in the coming days, a Railway official said.
Under the proposed RORO service, loaded trucks will be transported by rail by placing the vehicles directly onto specially designed flat wagons. The system will enable trucks along with their cargo to travel by rail, potentially providing an alternative to long-distance road transportation.
The Railway official sources said preparations for the proposed service are being worked out and further details regarding its operation, including the commencement date and other modalities, are expected to be issued shortly.
The development comes after the commissioning of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), which has provided an all-weather rail connection between Kashmir and the rest of the country. The Railways has also been expanding freight movement in Jammu and Kashmir, with recent consignments of goods being transported by rail to the Kashmir Valley.
The proposed RORO facility could provide a new logistics option for transporters and businesses, particularly for movement of loaded trucks over longer distances.
An official announcement from the Railway authorities regarding the RORO service is awaited.
