GMC Anantnag suspends 7 MBBS students

The disciplinary action was ordered by the Principal, GMC Anantnag, on Oct 3 after the college’s Anti-Ragging Committee conducted an inquiry into the incident.

The Principal ordered that the students “shall stand suspended from all academic activities, including theory and practical classes, clinical postings and examinations, with immediate effect and till further orders.”

They “shall stand suspended from the Boys Hostel, GMC Anantnag” and “shall stand evicted from their hostel accommodation with immediate effect till further orders,” the order said.

The action was taken “in order to ensure a safe and secure environment for hostel residents,” it said.

The Anti-Ragging Committee “took cognisance of the matter” and conducted a “detailed, impartial and exhaustive enquiry,” affording the students “due opportunity” and acting “without prejudice to any party.”

The committee’s findings, submitted to the Principal GMC Anantnag, Dr Junaid Salam Wani established the involvement of the seven students, according to the order.

It does not detail the nature of the alleged ragging or the specific acts attributed to them.

Their parents or guardians have been directed to “accompany their wards” and appear before the Anti-Ragging Committee on Oct 12 at 2:30 p.m. for further proceedings.

Failure to comply “shall consequently result in initiation of further disciplinary action as envisaged under the extant National Medical Commission (NMC) Anti-Ragging Regulations and institutional statutes,” the order said.

A copy of the order was forwarded to members of the Anti-Ragging Committee, the Registrar Academics and the Chief Warden of GMC Anantnag. The Warden of the Boys Hostel was directed to ensure the eviction of the students from the hostel.

The finding is an internal disciplinary determination by the college and does not amount to a criminal conviction.

The action comes days after SKIMS Medical College Hospital, Bemina, suspended five MBBS students and interns for a week over a separate reported ragging case, imposing aRs 10,000 fine on each and summoning their parents before its Anti-Ragging Committee.

SKIMS Principal Prof. FazlQadir Parry had said the institution followed a “zero-tolerance policy towards ragging,” with the safety and well-being of students its priority.

Anti-Ragging Committees operate across professional and other higher-education institutions, and students are required to furnish anti-ragging undertakings as part of the admission process.

Under the Jammu and Kashmir Prohibition of Ragging Act, 2011, ragging is a punishable offence carrying up to two years’ imprisonment, a fine of up to Rs 10,000, or both.
