Srinagar, Oct 12: Jammu and Kashmir has contributed to a national publication on hernia surgery, with Prof M R Attri, Head of the Department of Surgery at Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar, co-authoring a chapter in a handbook released at HSICON 2026 in Bhubaneswar.
Prof Attri, a senior laparoscopic surgeon, has co-authored the chapter “History and Clinical Assessment” with Dr Harsh Sheth of Mumbai in Hernia Management Pathway: An Algorithmic Approach to Hernia Assessment and Management.
The chapter focuses on systematic history-taking, clinical examination and assessment to guide treatment planning and surgical decision-making. These steps help surgeons identify the type and complexity of hernias, assess associated risk factors and determine appropriate treatment.
Authored by Erbaz Riyaz Momin and Priyanka Kishore Bhagtani, the book brings together contributions from surgeons and experts associated with the Hernia Society of India (HSI).
It provides a structured approach to hernia prevention, assessment, classification, investigations, preoperative optimisation, surgical techniques, mesh selection and fixation, and complex abdominal wall reconstruction. It also covers techniques such as botulinum toxin use and progressive pneumoperitoneum for challenging cases.
The publication is intended for medical students, postgraduate surgical trainees, practising surgeons and specialists in abdominal wall reconstruction, offering guidance to translate evidence-based knowledge into clinical practice.
Prof Attri said collaborative academic initiatives were important for sharing surgical knowledge, promoting standardised approaches and improving patient care. He expressed hope that the book would serve as a practical reference for surgeons and encourage young doctors to pursue evidence-based practice and continuous learning.
The contribution highlights the participation of doctors from Jammu and Kashmir in national-level academic initiatives in specialised surgical care.
