Over 70 Friday congregations across Kashmir, Jammu, Ladakh respond to MMU’s common khutbah call

Srinagar, Oct 17: More than 70 major Friday congregations across Kashmir, Jammu and Ladakh delivered sermons on the common theme of Imaan (faith) on October 16, responding to a call by the Mutahida Majlis-e-Ulema (MMU) that brought together Ulema from different schools of thought.

In a statement, MMU said Ulema representing Hanafi, Jafferi, Ahl-e-Hadith, Barelvi and Deobandi traditions participated in the initiative, demonstrating unity and collective religious responsibility while upholding the independence and sanctity of the Mimbar.

The sermons emphasised the importance of faith in shaping individual character, family life and society, stressing honesty, integrity and moral responsibility. Ulema also highlighted challenges facing younger generations, including materialism, declining religious awareness, moral confusion and the misuse of social media.

Parents, teachers, religious scholars and institutions were urged to safeguard young people’s faith through knowledge, compassionate guidance and exemplary conduct.

MMU described the response as a significant expression of cooperation among religious institutions despite differences in religious traditions and jurisprudence.

The initiative follows a September 15 Ulema conference at which representatives of different schools of thought resolved to address pressing religious and social concerns through coordinated Friday sermons, district-level engagements and sustained community awareness.

MMU said the programme would continue on designated Fridays, with upcoming themes including unity of the Ummah, drug abuse, suicide and mental health, youth challenges, responsible social media use, family values and environmental protection.

The organisation said the objective was to translate the collective resolve of Ulema into sustained public awareness, community engagement and practical action, with mosques, Imambargahs, madrasas and other religious institutions playing an active role.
