Bone & Joint marathon held in Srinagar to mark World Trauma Day, promote road safety

Srinagar, Oct 17: The Postgraduate Department of Orthopaedics at the Hospital for Bone & Joint Surgery, Barzulla, Srinagar, in collaboration with the Orthopaedic Surgeons Association of Kashmir (OSAK), organised its annual Bone & Joint Marathon along Foreshore Road to mark World Trauma Day and raise awareness about trauma prevention, road safety and timely emergency care.

The marathon witnessed participation from orthopaedic surgeons, physiotherapists, healthcare professionals and members of the public.

The event was flagged off by Prof Imtiyaz Hussain, Head of the Department of Orthopaedics; Prof Arshad Bashir, President, OSAK; Dr Asif Nazir Baba, General Secretary, OSAK; and Prof Naseemul Gani.

Addressing the participants, the organisers said the marathon was aimed at raising public awareness about preventable injuries and encouraging responsible behaviour on roads.

They urged citizens, particularly young people, to follow traffic rules, wear helmets and seat belts, avoid reckless driving and ensure timely access to medical care in emergencies.

The speakers highlighted trauma as a major public health challenge and called for coordinated efforts by the administration, healthcare institutions, educational organisations and civil society to strengthen trauma care services and improve road safety awareness.

Through the initiative, OSAK reiterated its commitment to preventive healthcare, community engagement and public education.

The event conveyed the message: “Every life matters, every preventable injury counts, and every responsible action can save a life.”

The organisers, Dr Iftikhar Wani, Dr Ansarul Haq Lone and Dr Mudasir Malik, thanked the participants, volunteers, sponsors and supporters for contributing to the success of the event.

The programme concluded with an appeal to the public to make road safety a personal responsibility and work collectively towards reducing preventable injuries, disabilities and deaths in Kashmir.
