Red alert in Mumbai as monsoon arrives earlier disrupting transportation & normal life

New Delhi, May 26: The southwest monsoon arrived in Mumbai on Monday, marking its earliest onset in the city in 75 years reports PTI. The usual date for the monsoon’s arrival in the financial capital is June 11, but this year it made landfall more than two weeks early, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) quoted by PTI.

The monsoon reached Maharashtra and advanced rapidly across the state. Mumbai woke to overcast skies and heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds reaching speeds of up to 60 kmph reports regional media.

Several areas across the city, including Borivali, Santacruz, and Colaba, were placed under red alert, while surrounding areas such as Navi Mumbai and Thane were under orange alert.

Heavy rains caused waterlogging across low-lying areas and disrupted suburban train services.

Central Railway’s Harbour line was suspended for several hours due to flood waters entering stations. Several tracks in the CSMT yard were also submerged, affecting train movements. The National Disaster Response Force and the administration remains on alert as the IMD continues to forecast intense rainfall and thunderstorms for Mumbai and surrounding districts.
