Srinagar, June 12: Ajaz Ahmad Bhat, Director of Sericulture for Jammu and Kashmir, conducted comprehensive inspections of multiple silkworm seed production facilities today, signalling strong prospects for this season’s cocoon crop.
Bhat visited key departmental facilities, including the Silkworm Seed Unit at Main Grainage in Srinagar and the Seed Station at Sarie Dangerpora in Bandipora district to evaluate silkworm seed production and cocoon crop management operations.
Following his assessment of spring silkworm rearing activities across Kashmir Division, the director expressed confidence that the region is positioned for an exceptional cocoon harvest, which would generate substantial income for local silkworm farmers.
The director reported that P1 seed rearing at the farmer level is approaching completion. The department will purchase P1 seed cocoons from registered seed rearers at Rs. 1,300 per kilogram, with pricing based on pupation rates.
Meanwhile, silkworm seed production at departmental facilities and grainages continues at full capacity, with officials prioritising self-sufficiency in high-quality seed supply throughout the Union Territory.
Highlighting youth involvement as crucial to the sector’s growth, Bhat urged young entrepreneurs to utilise various departmental programs designed to create sustainable livelihoods and promote entrepreneurship development.
