Lok Sabha sees smooth functioning of Question Hour after 6 days of disruption

New Delhi, July 29: Lok Sabha on Tuesday witnessed smooth functioning of the Question Hour for the first time since the beginning of the Monsoon session on July 21.

The House has been witnessing repeated disruptions over the Opposition’s demand for a debate on electoral roll revision in Bihar and Operation Sindoor.

While the debate on Operation Sindoor commenced in the House on Monday, the Opposition disrupted the first half of the day demanding an assurance from the government that a discussion on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in Bihar will be held after that.

Tuesday was the first time in six days that the House could take up the Question Hour without disruptions.

Speaker Om Birla has been insisting that members should participate in the Question Hour as issues related to key ministries are taken up and the government is held accountable.

What we know about Shane Tamura

Srinagar, July 29: A 27-year-old man named Shane Tamura has been identified as the gunman responsible for a deadly shooting at a midtown Manhattan office building on Monday evening, local time. The incident left at least four people dead. According to the Fire Department of New York, emergency services responded to a call at 6:28 p.m. reporting gunfire inside a Park Avenue high-rise that houses major financial institutions, including private equity firm Blackstone and the National Football League (NFL).

According to reports police recovered Tamura’s rifle, a Palmetto State Armory AR-15 assault rifle, which was smeared with blood. A vehicle with Nevada plates registered to Tamura was found at the scene. Inside that vehicle, the police found a rifle case with rounds, a loaded revolver, ammunition and magazines, a backpack and medication prescribed to Tamura. The vehicle was searched by bomb squad and found to be clear of explosives.

The initial investigation shows Tamura’s car travelled across country through Colorado on July 26 and Columbia New Jersey as recently as 4:24 pm on Monday. The vehicle entered New York city shortly after.

He was armed with a long rifle and wearing a bullet-resistant vest entered a 44-story office tower on Park Avenue in midtown Manhattan, not far from Grand Central Station, Rockefeller Center, and the Museum of Modern Art. He reportedly began shooting shortly after entering the building.

Dalit IT professional hacked to death in TN's Tirunelveli

Chennai, July 29: In yet another suspected case of honour killing, a 26-year-old Dalit IT professional was brutally hacked to death in broad daylight in Tamil Nadu’s Tirunelveli district.

The victim, Kavin Kumar, was allegedly murdered by the younger brother of the woman he was in love with.

The incident has sparked outrage, with the victim’s family accusing the woman’s parents – both serving police officers – of being complicit in the crime.

Kavin Kumar, a native of Arumugamangalam near Ayiralan in Thoothukudi district, had been working for a private IT firm in Chennai. Recently, he returned to his hometown.

According to local people, years ago, while studying at a school near his village, he met and fell in love with a classmate. The woman is the daughter of Saravanan and Krishnakumari, both sub-inspectors in the Manimutharu battalion of the state police. The family currently resides in KTC Nagar, Palayamkottai.

Though Kavin Kumar and the young woman attended the same school and later kept in touch during college, their relationship faced opposition from the woman’s family, reportedly due to caste differences.

The family of the girl is from an intermediate caste, leading to stiff opposition.

Despite this, Kavin Kumar often travelled from Ayiralan to Palayamkottai on his motorcycle in hopes of meeting or speaking with her.

On Sunday, he had accompanied his family to a private hospital in Palayamkottai, where his grandfather had been admitted for treatment.

Coincidentally, Surjith, the woman’s 24-year-old younger brother, came to know of Kavin Kumar’s presence at the hospital. After the treatment concluded, Kavin Kumar stepped out of the hospital to return home.

Surjith, who was reportedly waiting nearby with a hidden sickle, called him aside for a conversation. An argument ensued, during which Surjith allegedly attacked Kavin Kumar with the weapon and fled the scene.

Kavin Kumar succumbed to severe injuries on the spot. Police rushed to the location, recovered the body, and sent it for post-mortem investigation.

Based on CCTV footage and a preliminary investigation, Surjith was arrested soon after.

The murder has sent shockwaves across the region. Kavin Kumar’s family has accused the girl’s parent of involvement in the crime. A case has been registered against both officers, who have been placed on the waiting list pending further inquiry.

This brutal murder has reignited concerns about caste-based honour killings in Tamil Nadu, even among families of law enforcement personnel.

Trump, Starmer call for Gaza ceasefire, highlighting humanitarian crisis

London, July 29: US President Donald Trump met with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer in Scotland, where both agreed that urgent action is needed to bring an end to the suffering in Gaza, according to a statement from the British government.

“They reiterated their calls for an immediate ceasefire to pave the way for peace in the region,” the statement said.

A day after Israel eased aid restrictions due to a worsening humanitarian crisis, Trump expressed disagreement on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s statement that there is no starvation in Gaza, Xinhua news agency reported.

When asked whether he agreed with Netanyahu’s remarks about hunger in Gaza before a meeting with Starmer, Trump said, “Based on television, I would say not particularly because those children look very hungry.”

At a press conference later, Trump said, “Some of those kids are, that’s real starvation stuff. I see it, and you can’t fake that.”

Trump also noted that Israel should ensure aid would be delivered. “I want them to make sure they get the food, every ounce of food,” he said, adding that the aid food “is not being delivered, or at least all of it.”

Starmer said the situation in Gaza is “absolutely intolerable” and seeing the images of starving children is “revolting.”

Israel on Sunday announced a pause in military operations in certain areas for 10 hours daily to improve aid flow. Alongside the measures, military operations continued. Israel had no immediate comment about the latest strikes, which occurred outside the declared time frame for the pause between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m.

Youth booked for deliberately hitting elderly man after scooty collision in Jammu

Jammu, July 28: Police have booked a youth for allegedly hitting an elderly man after his scooty collided with the accused’s Mahindra Thar in Jammu city, officials said on Monday.

A video of the incident surfaced online showing that the accused was driving his vehicle rashly from Gandhi Nagar towards Greenbelt Park.

A scooty, being driven by an elderly man, rammed into the car near Allora Textiles at around 1:30 pm.

The CCTV footage showed that after the initial collision, the Thar driver reversed his vehicle and deliberately hit the victim again, causing grievous injuries.

The incident occurred on Sunday. “The injured person was taken to GMC Hospital Jammu by passers-by, while the Thar driver fled the scene,” the police spokesperson said.

Police have registered an FIR under sections 281 (rash driving), section 109 (attempt to murder) and 125(a) (endangering human life) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Gandhi Nagar police station, and seized the vehicle.

The driver is absconding, but the vehicle’s owner has been detained. Superintendent of Police (SP) Ajay Sharma said the video of the incident surfaced on social media, with numerous accounts reporting it.

“The Thar was being driven by Manan Anand, son of Rajinder Anand of Nanak Nagar,” the SP said.

The driver is currently at large and may have left Jammu. Efforts are underway to trace him, he said.

Over 3.83 lakh perform Amarnath Yatra in 25 days, thousands more head to shrine

Over 3.83 lakh perform Amarnath Yatra in 25 days, thousands more head to shrine

Srinagar, July 29: Over 3.83 lakh pilgrims have so far undertaken the ongoing Amarnath Yatra, with 12 days left for the annual Himalayan pilgrimage to end.

This year’s Amarnath Yatra has seen a heavy rush of enthusiastic devotees to the holy cave shrine in a highly secured, peaceful and smooth environment.

Officials said another batch of 1,490 Yatris left Jammu in two escorted convoys for Kashmir on Tuesday.

Of these, the first convoy of 16 vehicles carrying 327 pilgrims left at 3.25 a.m. for Baltal base camp, while the second convoy of 45 vehicles carrying 1,163 Yatris left at 3.57 a.m. for Pahalgam base camp.

The ‘Chhari Pujan’ of Lord Shiva’s holy mace (Chhari Mubarak) is being celebrated in Amareshwar Temple in Srinagar on this day, on ‘Nag Panchami’.

The final journey of the Chhari Mubarak towards the holy cave shrine will start on August 4. The ‘Chhari Mubarak’ is traditionally housed inside the Amareshwar Temple at the Dashnami Akhara Building in the Budshah Chowk area of Srinagar city. It is the journey of the Chhari Mubarak that determines the landmarks of the Amarnath Yatra.

It will start its final journey towards the cave shrine from the Amareshwar temple in Srinagar on August 4 and will reach the holy cave shrine on August 9, marking the official conclusion of the Yatra.

During its journey from its seat to the holy cave shrine, traditional Puja will be held en route at Pampore, Bijbehara, Mattan and Pahalgam before the Chhari Mubarak arrives at its final destination, the holy cave shrine.

Authorities have made extensive multi-tier security arrangements for this year’s Amarnath Yatra, as this takes place after the cowardly attack of April 22 in which Pakistan-backed terrorists killed 26 civilians after segregating them based on faith in the Baisaran meadow of Pahalgam.

An additional 180 companies of CAPFs have been brought in to augment the existing strength of the Army, BSF, CRPF, SSB and the local police. The Army has deployed over 8,000 special commandos to secure the passage of the pilgrims this year.

The Yatra started on July 3 and will end after 38 days on August 9, coinciding with Shravan Purnima and Raksha Bandhan.

Yatris approach the holy cave shrine situated 3888 metres above sea level in the Kashmir Himalayas either from the traditional Pahalgam route or the shorter Baltal route. Those using the Pahalgam route pass through Chandanwari, Sheshnag and Panchtarni to reach the cave shrine, covering a distance of 46 km on foot. This trek takes a pilgrim four days to get to the cave shrine. And, those using the shorter Baltal route have to trek 14 km to reach the cave shrine and return to the base camp the same day after having darshan.

No helicopter services are available to Yatris this year due to security reasons.

The cave shrine houses an ice stalagmite structure that wanes and waxes with the phases of the moon. Devotees believe that the ice stalagmite structure symbolises the mythical powers of Lord Shiva.

Rahul Gandhi sponsors education of 22 shelling-affected children in J-K’s Poonch

Rahul Gandhi visits shelling-hit Poonch

Rajouri, July 29: The Congress party leadership has announced that Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, is sponsoring the education of 22 children from Jammu and Kashmir’s border district of Poonch. These children belong to families affected by cross-border shelling.

It is pertinent to mention that following Operation Sindoor, a war-like situation had emerged along the Line of Control (LoC), with Poonch town among the worst affected areas. Pakistani shelling had claimed the lives of 13 civilians across the region.

“Rahul Ji, during his visit, had promised to personally do something for these children. He has now fulfilled that promise by sponsoring the education of 22 of them,” said Tariq Hamid Karra, senior Congress leader.

He added that while 22 children have been included in the initial list, the number is expected to increase in the coming days.

Tariq Hamid Karra, who is also the President of the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee, arrived in Rajouri and Poonch for a three-day visit. On Tuesday morning, he travelled to Poonch where he chaired an event to formally hand over the financial aid sent by Rahul Gandhi for the children.

“This initiative is a gesture of compassion to ensure that the education of these children is not disrupted,” he said.

MLA Rajouri, Iftikhar Ahmed, also praised the move, calling it a humane decision. He said, “Rahul Gandhi has always empathized with the pain of the common man. This initiative is yet another example of that.”

Trump says he’s shortening the 50-day deadline for Russia to end the war in Ukraine

Trump tells BBC he is 'disappointed but not done' with Putin, backs NATO and UK ties

Edinburgh, Jul 29: US President Donald Trump said Monday he is giving Russian President Vladimir Putin 10 to 12 days to stop the killing in Ukraine, shortening a 50-day deadline he had given the Russian leader two weeks ago.

Russia fired an overnight barrage of more than 300 drones, four cruise missiles and three ballistic missiles, the Ukrainian air force said, as the Russian bombardment of Ukrainian cities continued despite Trump’s pressure for it to end. U.S.-led peace efforts have also failed to gain momentum.

Trump had said on July 14 that he would implement “severe tariffs” on Russia unless a peace deal is reached by early September. On Monday, Trump said he would now give Putin 10 to 12 days, meaning he wants peace efforts to make progress by Aug. 7-9.

The plan includes possible sanctions and secondary tariffs targeting Russia’s trading partners. The formal announcement would come later Monday or on Tuesday, Trump said.

“No reason in waiting,” Trump said of the shorter timeline. “We just don’t see any progress being made.”

Putin has “got to make a deal. Too many people are dying,” Trump said during a visit to Scotland.

There was no immediate response from Russia.

Trump repeated his criticism of Putin for talking about ending the war but continuing to bombard Ukrainian civilians.

“And I say, that’s not the way to do it,” Trump said. He added, “I’m disappointed in President Putin.”

Asked at a news conference about a potential meeting with the Russian leader, Trump said: “I’m not so interested in talking anymore.”

Still, he voiced some reluctance about imposing penalties on the Kremlin, saying that he loves the Russian people. “I don’t want to do that to Russia,” he said, but he noted how many Russians, along with Ukrainians, are dying in the war.

Ukraine has urged Western countries to take a tougher line with Putin. Andrii Yermak, the head of Ukraine’s presidential office, thanked Trump for shortening the deadline.

“Putin understands only strength — and that has been conveyed clearly and loudly,” Yermak said on Telegram, adding that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy shared the sentiment.

Latest attacks in Ukraine

A Russian drone blew out the windows of a 25-story residential building in the Darnytskyi district of Kyiv, the head of the city’s military administration, Tymur Tkachenko, wrote on Telegram. Eight people were injured, including a 4-year-old girl, he said.

The attack also started a fire in Kropyvnytskyi, in central Ukraine, local officials said, but no injuries were reported.

The main target of the Russian attack was Starokostiantyniv, in the Khmelnytskyi region of western Ukraine, the air force said. Regional authorities reported no damage or casualties.

Western Ukraine is on the other side of the country from the front line, and the Ukrainian military is believed to have significant airfields as well as arsenals and depots there.

The Russian Defense Ministry said its forces carried out an overnight strike with long-range, air-launched weapons, hitting a Ukrainian air base along with an ammunition depot containing stockpiles of missiles and components for drone production.

3 terrorists killed in Dachigam encounter: Army

3 terrorists killed in Dachigam encounter: Army

Srinagar, Jul 28: Security forces on Monday killed three terrorists during a fierce encounter in the Lidwas area around the Mahadev mountain peak of the Dachigam forest range, located on the outskirts of Srinagar.

The operation, codenamed ‘Operation Mahadev’, was launched in the upper reaches of Harwan following intelligence inputs suggesting the presence of terrorists in the area.

The operation was carried out by 4 Para, 24 Rashtriya Rifles, and J&K Police in dense forests of Dachigam, and the contact was established on Monday morning.

The operation came over three months after the Pahalgam attack, which brought India and Pakistan to the brink of war as India responded with Operation Sindoor, resulting in a four-day intense military confrontation between the two nuclear-armed countries.

The encounter began at around 11 am on Monday after specific intelligence inputs indicated the presence of foreign terrorists in the region.

The operation unfolded in the dense forest terrain between the Zabarwan and Mahadev ridges, giving the operation its name.

The Chirar Corps of the Army said that the operation against the terrorists was underway.

“Three terrorists have been killed and we are ascertaining their identity,” a senior Police officer said. “All of them seem to be foreigners.”

Kashmir Zone Police in a post on microblogging site X posted, “Op Mahadev: The identification of the neutralised #terrorists is being done! Please await further details @JmuKmrPolice.”

According to the Army’s 15 Corps, contact was established early in the morning, leading to an intense gunfight in the densely forested area.

“Three terrorists have been neutralised in an intense firefight. Operation continues,” the Army said in a post on X.

The encounter site lies in a strategically significant area within the Dachigam forest range, which borders south Kashmir’s Anantnag district through Pahalgam on one side and Ganderbal district on the other.

Officials say the terrorists may have used these routes to traverse Kashmir undetected.

While the identities of the slain terrorists are yet to be confirmed, security officials suspect they may be linked to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack in which 26 persons were killed.

Speaking to the media persons, Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kashmir Zone, Vidhi Kumar Birdi, confirmed the recovery of three bodies from the encounter site.

“The operation is still ongoing. While three bodies have been observed, we will not disclose any further details until proper identification is completed,” he said.

The Army recovered a significant cache of arms and ammunition from the encounter site, including one US-made carbine, one AK-47 rifle, 17 rifle grenades, and other war-like stores.

In addition, a makeshift hideout was discovered deep in the woods, where terrorists had stored food supplies and cooking utensils, indicating that the group had been stationed in the forests.

“The presence of such logistics and weaponry indicates they were hardcore terrorists. It’s a major success for the security forces,” Army officials said.

Earlier this year, similar encounters in Shopian and Awantipora had also resulted in the deaths of three terrorists in each incident, showing a continued push by security forces to root out terrorist networks in Kashmir.

As the operation remains ongoing, officials said that the identification process and further investigation would determine the full scope of the activities of these terrorists and whether they were directly involved in the Pahalgam killings.

Security agencies have vowed to continue their crackdown on terrorists in the area.

“Lt Gen Pratik Sharma, #ArmyCdrNC compliments #ChinarCorps for their swift action and precise execution in neutralising three terrorists in the ongoing operation #Mahadev in the area #Lidwas. #IndianArmy stands by its commitment to keep #JammuKashmir terror-free. #NationFirst #IndianArmy @adgpi @HQ_IDS_India @ChinarcorpsIA,” Northern Command-Indian Army said in a post on X.
