Gold declines Rs 600 to Rs 99,020 per 10 g; silver plunges Rs 1,000

New Delhi, July 25: Gold prices extended losses for the second straight day, by declining Rs 500 to Rs 99,120 per 10 grams in the national capital on Friday, amid easing global trade tensions and dampening the safe-haven demand.

According to the All India Sarafa Association, the precious metal of 99.9 per cent purity had finished at Rs 99,620 per 10 grams on Thursday.

At the local markets, gold of 99.5 per cent purity also decreased Rs 500 to Rs 98,750 per 10 grams (inclusive of all taxes) on Friday as against the previous closing level of Rs 99,250 per 10 grams.

“Gold edged lower on Friday impacted by easing tariff-related concerns, a rebound in the US dollar, and waning expectations for multiple interest rate cuts by the US Federal Reserve due to a strong job market,” Saumil Gandhi, Senior Analyst – Commodities at HDFC Securities.

However, silver prices traded flat at Rs 1,15,000 per kilogram (inclusive of all taxes) on Friday, as per the association.

Gandhi further highlighted that the US has already secured a trade deal with Japan, and there is optimism surrounding the US-EU trade agreement. Additionally, the US is expected to have trade pacts with India, Mexico, and Brazil, which may further increase selling pressure in bullion.

Spot gold fell by USD 20.72 or 0.62 per cent to USD 3,347.94 per ounce in the international markets.

“Gold traded weak at USD 3,345 per ounce, as expectations of tariff deals between the US and trade partners like Japan and the EU reduced safe-haven appeal.

“These developments may keep gold volatile, especially at elevated levels. Focus now shifts to the upcoming Fed’s interest rate decision next week, which will be crucial for the direction of bullion prices,” Jateen Trivedi, VP Research Analyst – Commodity and Currency, LKP Securities, said.

On the global front, spot silver slipped by 0.35 per cent to trade at USD 38.92 per ounce.

Mirwaiz condemns Israel action on Gaza, says ‘silence of global community is pathetic’

MMU calls for shutdown against tourist killings in Pahalgam tomorrow

Srinagar, July 25: Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Friday condemned the Israeli actions in Gaza and said “silence and inaction” of the global community was “pathetic”.

Addressing the Friday congregation at Jamia Masjid here, he said, “As we gather here in peace, our hearts bleed for our brothers and sisters in Gaza, who are facing an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe and starvation. Innocent civilians, especially children, are being relentlessly bombarded even as they search for food and safety. Starvation is being used as a weapon of war.”

Condemning the “barbarism”, he added, “The silence and inaction of the global community is pathetic. The world’s failure to prevent these atrocities, to stop the killing of children and civilians in real time, will remain a stain on the conscience of humanity.”

The Hurriyat chief said that as the people of faith, “we stand in solidarity with the oppressed people of Gaza and pray to God to bring them out of this unprecedented crisis”.

Mirwaiz was allowed to offer prayers at the grand mosque after two weeks.

“After two Fridays, I was allowed to come to Jama Masjid. Repeatedly preventing me from coming to Jama Masjid on Fridays is completely uncalled for. It is a direct interference in the religious rights of people, which alienates them further, serving no other purpose,” he said.

He asked the administration to desist from such actions and let people have the freedom to practice their fundamental rights, which includes the right to practice religion and listen to Friday sermons.

Why is Microsoft investing 1.7 billion dollars in organic waste disposal

Why is Microsoft investing 1.7 billion dollars in organic waste disposal

Srinagar, July 25: Microsoft is diving into one of the most unconventional areas of the carbon removal industry—human and industrial waste. The tech giant has signed a 12-year agreement with climate-tech startup Vaulted Deep, under which it will purchase 4.9 million metric tons of organic waste, including manure, sewage sludge, and paper mill residues, starting next year.

This deal, valued at approximately $1.7 billion based on an estimated price of $350 per ton of carbon, marks one of Microsoft’s most significant investments in carbon removal. Vaulted Deep found in 2023 specialises in collecting contaminated bioslurry waste that’s too messy to reuse and piping it 5000 feet below the Earth’s surface. Once buried, the decomposition process stops, locking in methane and CO₂ that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere.

Microsoft’s environmental idea comes at a time when its energy hungry AI operations are increasing its carbon emissions. Between 2020 and 2024, the company released 75.5 million tons of CO2. At the same time, its goal is to become carbon negative by 2030 and to remove more carbon than it can by 2050.

To hit that target, Microsoft is betting on a suite of experimental technologies. Vaulted Deep’s project joins a diverse carbon removal portfolio that includes reforesting Panama and capturing trash incineration emissions in Norway for storage beneath the North Sea. According to Inc., the current cost of CO2 removal with the company is $350 per ton. If you multiply that by Microsoft’s contract, that makes it worth more than $1.7 billion. However, neither entity has disclosed the actual terms of the deal, and CEO Julia Reichelstein says the company expects its costs to drop over time, and that the mentioned price isn’t the actual sum that the tech giant paid.

Projects such as these enable Microsoft and other tech giants to offset the massive amounts of carbon emissions produced by data centers, particularly as they consume a significant amount of electrical power, often generated from fossil fuels. For example, Musk is facing legal action in Memphis, Tennessee, after his company, xAI, is accused polluting the air by using under reported power generators at the Colossus Supercomputer. Aside from that, many companies, including Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Oracle, and others, are investing in small modular reactor research to establish their clean energy sources for their expanding data center businesses.

Don’t mistake our silence for weakness: Dy CM Surinder Choudhry

Don’t mistake our silence for weakness: Dy CM Surinder Choudhry

Srinagar, July 25: Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhry on Friday said that the current administration is reviewing several sensitive files from past governments and warned that their silence should not be seen as a sign of weakness.

“We are going through files for the past 8–9 months. If anything wrong has happened, we will bring it before the people. Our silence is not our weakness it’s an attempt to maintain relations with Delhi. But if needed, we will speak up with facts,” Choudhry said.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to transparency, especially in electoral matters. “We’ve always believed in transparency. If any mistakes happened in the voter lists, they will be addressed. Elections are won by people, not by lists,” he added.

Choudhry also called on the media in Jammu and Kashmir to play a positive role. “You show both our flaws and our good work. We have a sweet relationship with you, and we will keep feeding you sweets but you must also honour our trust,” he said.

In a sharp political attack, Choudhry questioned BJP’s 11-year rule in J&K. “Did militancy stop? Did corruption end? If so, why did Pulwama and other incidents happen even after Article 370 and 35A were abrogated?”

According to KNS, Dy CM said that the Article 370 was granted during Maharaja Hari Singh’s time, not by political leaders. “Restrictions were imposed to protect our lands and jobs from outsiders. Even Maharaja Karan Singh said this,” Choudhry noted.

He said, “If someone asks us for our life with love, we will give it. But don’t challenge our silence if we start speaking, we’ll tell everything, page by page.(KNS)

SC extends relief for Rahul Gandhi in Veer Savarkar defamation case

Rahul Gandhi visits shelling-hit Poonch

New Delhi, July 25: The Supreme Court on Friday extended its order staying the summons issued to Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi in a criminal defamation case related to his alleged derogatory remarks about freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar Savarkar.

In November 2022, during his Bharat Jodo Yatra, Rahul Gandhi made defamatory remarks against Savarkar at a rally in Maharashtra’s Akola.

A Bench of Justices Dipankar Datta and AG Masih deferred the scheduled hearing for four weeks after a letter seeking adjournment was submitted in the matter.

In the meantime, the Justice Datta-led Bench ordered extension of the interim relief originally granted to Rahul Gandhi on April 25.

Further, it asked the complainant, advocate Nripendra Pandey, to file his reply within two weeks and granted liberty to Rahul Gandhi to file a rejoinder affidavit, if any, within two weeks thereafter.

In an earlier hearing, the apex court had cautioned Rahul Gandhi against making “irresponsible statements”, specifically asking him not to speak anything against freedom fighters.

The Supreme Court had warned that if the Congress leader made any such comments in the future, it would initiate “suo motu” action against him.

“Let’s be clear, any further statement and we will take suo moto! We will not allow you to speak anything about our freedom fighters. They have given us freedom, and this is how we treat them?” said the Justice Datta-led bench as it dealt with Rahul Gandhi’s petition to quash a 2022 defamation case filed against him.

After senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, representing Rahul Gandhi, gave an oral undertaking that the Congress leader would refrain from making such comments in future, the apex court had passed an interim order staying the order of the lower court summoning him to face trial for the offences under Sections 153-A and 505 of the now-repealed Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Before this, the Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court had declined to exercise its inherent powers in favour of Rahul Gandhi, who had sought the quashing of the entire legal proceedings.

A single-judge Bench of Justice Subhash Vidyarthi, in its order passed on April 4, said that Rahul Gandhi had the statutory remedy of filing a revision against the order of the trial court.

Under the IPC, 1860, Section 153-A addressed the offence of “promoting enmity between different groups based on religion, race, caste, etc.,” and Section 505 dealt with “statements conducing to public mischief”.

Sakina Itoo over SMHS incident

Shutting patient care unfortunate, guilty will not be spared: Sakina Itoo over SMHS incident

Srinagar, July 25: Condemning the recent incident at SMHS Hospital where an attendant physically assaulted a doctor, Health, Medical Education, School, and Higher Education Minister Sakina Itoo on Friday visited the hospital to take stock of the situation.

Itoo stated unequivocally that the shutting down of patient care services and emergency facilities is unacceptable and that those involved in the incident will not be spared.

“The incident should not have happened—especially inside a hospital. Anyone who has committed a wrongdoing will face action as per the law. However, the closure of the hospital cannot be justified and should not have occurred in the first place,” she said.

The minister emphasized that patients arriving at the hospital were left without treatment due to the shutdown.

“Patients were left wandering without care. This was wrong. An investigation will be launched into the matter,” she added.

Calling the closure of emergency, OT, wards, and other critical services “extremely wrong,” she stressed that such actions would not be tolerated.

“Anything may be tolerable, but compromising patient care is not justifiable,” she reiterated.
Itoo also visited JVC Hospital, where she witnessed a surge in patient load as many who were turned away from SMHS had to go there instead.

“Doctors are our brothers and sisters. They must treat patients with compassion, as people come emotionally and mentally distressed, hoping for a cure. After Allah (SWT), patients place their hope in doctors. But doctors can only treat—they cannot save someone from death,” she said.

Addressing the issue of medical negligence, the minister said that inquiries are initiated in such cases, and doctors found guilty are punished as per the law. She confirmed that action has been taken in past cases.

She urged the public to exercise restraint and not to misbehave with or assault healthcare workers.
Regarding the assault at SMHS, Itoo said legal action is underway against those involved. However, she also warned that strict action will be taken against those responsible for the shutdown that followed the incident.

The minister announced the setting up of a grievance cell at the secretariat level to address complaints from patients, attendants, and doctors. Genuine complaints, she assured, will be thoroughly investigated and acted upon.

Furthermore, the Health Department will issue instructions requiring all doctors to wear aprons and nameplatesdisplaying their name, department, and specialization. She said this would be made mandatory—especially the apron.

Mehbooba demands time-bound probe into killing of Jammu youth

Srinagar, Jul 25: Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and PDP President, Mehbooba Mufti on Friday demanded a time-bound probe into the killing of a youth in alleged police firing in Jammu.

“Mohammad Parvez a tribal youth was killed by the police at Surat Chak, Police Station in Satwari yesterday. He’s now been labelled as a drug dealer but even that may be the case we still live in a democratic country where justice is served through rule of law as opposed to khap panchayats or kangaroo courts,” Mehbooba wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

“Sincerely hope the DG takes cognisance of this shocking incident by ordering a time bound impartial probe. We must not descend or condone a culture of extra judicial encounters because that’s precisely what alienates people,” she added.

Key recruitment and research information compromised; probe panel formed

Srinagar, July 25: The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), the apex body for agricultural research in India, experienced a significant security breach earlier this year, resulting in the loss of critical data spanning recruitment records to vital research projects, as per The Indian Express report.

According to internal documents reviewed by the publication, ICAR recently set up a six-member committee tasked with examining the “non-functionality of the DC (Data Centre) and DRC (Disaster Recovery Centre).” The committee has been instructed to provide recommendations on enhancing data security and to propose safeguards that can prevent similar incidents in the future.

ICAR scientists, from Lucknow, Karnal, Hyderabad, Pune and Delhi, and all of them said while speaking to Indian Express, there were “problems on the portal” and that they have raised the issue several times. “It is not only our email communication system that is not working. The problem is that crucial data of recruitment, finances, scientists, research projects and administrative work has vanished from the server and replication server,” said a senior scientist.

When contacted, M L Jat, Secretary, Department of Agricultural Research and Education, and Director General of ICAR, told The Indian Express: “A few months back, there was some hacking of our website.

The panel, which has been asked to submit its report by July 31, has yet to hold its first meeting, a member of the committee confirmed. The ICAR, which marked its 97th Foundation Day in New Delhi on July 16, describes itself as an organisation that “has been spearheading agricultural research, education and extension activities for productivity enhancement and diversification of Indian agriculture”.

As per sources the affected data was mainly related to Agricultural Scientists Recruitment Board (ASRB), Indian Agricultural Statistics Research Institute (IASRI) and National Academy of Agricultural Research Management (NAARM), all of which function under ICAR.
