US automakers say Trump’s 15% tariff deal with Japan puts them at disadvantage

Trump tells BBC he is 'disappointed but not done' with Putin, backs NATO and UK ties

Washington, July 23: US automakers are concerned about President Donald Trump’s agreement to tariff Japanese vehicles at 15%, saying they will face steeper import taxes on steel, aluminum and parts than their competitors.

“We need to review all the details of the agreement, but this is a deal that will charge lower tariffs on Japanese autos with no US content,” said Matt Blunt, president of the American Automotive Policy Council, which represents the Big 3 American automakers, General Motors, Ford and Jeep-maker Stellantis.

Blunt said in an interview the US companies and workers “definitely are at a disadvantage” because they face a 50% tariff on steel and aluminum and a 25% tariff on parts and finished vehicles, with some exceptions for products covered under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement that went into effect in 2020.

The domestic automaker reaction reveals the challenge of enforcing policies across the world economy, showing that for all of Trump’s promises there can be genuine tradeoffs from policy choices that risk serious blowback in politically important states such as Michigan and Wisconsin, where automaking is both a source of income and of identity.

Trump portrayed the trade framework as a major win after announcing it on Tuesday, saying it would add hundreds of thousands of jobs to the US economy and open the Japanese economy in ways that could close a persistent trade imbalance.

The agreement includes a 15% tariff that replaces the 25% import tax the Republican president had threatened to charge starting on Aug 1. Japan would also put together $550 billion to invest in US projects, the White House said.

The framework with Japan will remove regulations that prevent American vehicles from being sold in that country, the White House has said, adding that it would be possible for vehicles built in Detroit to be shipped directly to Japan and ready to be sold.

But Blunt said that foreign auto producers, including the US, Europe and South Korea, have just a 6% share in Japan, raising scepticism that simply having the open market that the Trump administration says will exist in that country will be sufficient.

“Tough nut to crack, and I’d be very surprised if we see any meaningful market penetration in Japan,” Blunt said.

Major Japanese automakers Toyota, Honda and Nissan did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the trade framework, nor did Autos Drive America or the Alliance for Automotive Innovation, organisations that also represent the industry.

There is the possibility that the Japanese framework would give automakers and other countries grounds for pushing for changes in the Trump administration’s tariffs regime.

The president has previously said that flexibility in import tax negotiations is something he values. The USMCA is up for review next year.

Ford, GM and Stellantis do “have every right to be upset,” said Sam Fiorani, vice president at consultancy AutoForecast Solutions.

But “Honda, Toyota, and Nissan still import vehicles from Mexico and Canada, where the current levels of tariffs can be higher than those applied to Japanese imports. Most of the high-volume models from Japanese brands are already produced in North America.”

Fiorani noted that among the few exceptions are the Toyota 4Runner, the Mazda CX-5 and the Subaru Forester, but most of the other imports fill niches that are too small to warrant production in the US.

“There will be negotiations between the US and Canada and Mexico, and it will probably result in tariffs no higher than 15%,” Fiorani added, “but nobody seems to be in a hurry to negotiate around the last Trump administration’s free trade agreement.”

Revocation of J&K statehood illegal: Dr Farooq Abdullah

0
Will move Supreme Court if statehood to J&K is delayed further: Farooq Abdullah

New Delhi, Jul 23: National Conference president Farooq Abdullah has termed the revocation of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood “illegal” and urged for its restoration.

Addressing a public meeting titled ‘Statehood Now’, organised by the Forum for Human Rights in Jammu and Kashmir, the octogenarian leader claimed the governor did not understand the law at the time of the move, which he had admitted in an interview.

“…people in power want you to bow before them. We are not here to bow. We are not here to bend. It is our right as Indians. Right (statehood) given by the Constitution of India. What you have done is illegal. Restore it. Restore our statehood,” Abdullah said.

He said that when the Centre abrogated Article 370, it justified the decision by claiming the erstwhile state was not progressing and there was terrorism because of these people.

“The very people who rejected Pakistan, when we have a religious identity with them, we said no, not that side, Gandhi’s side. I wish those leaders would wake up from their graves and see what India we have joined. Where are we going?” he said.

The former chief minister said the basic issue — whether it was Article 370 or statehood — lay in the divide between Delhi and Kashmir that had persisted since Independence.

“The real reason is that there is no trust in Muslims. I don’t know when that trust will come…this is the sad part. When will you consider us as humans, when will you treat us as Indians? I am a Muslim, I will live as a Muslim, I will die as a Muslim but I am an Indian Muslim not a Pakistani. The entire fight is on this,” he said.

Addressing the gathering, Deputy Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Surinder Choudhary said the erstwhile state was converted into a “municipality”.

“The people of J&K can’t understand under which law we were converted into a municipality,” he said.

“The regional identity, the cultural identity is something that we celebrate,” he said. “In the context of Jammu and Kashmir, the regional identity is always number one, it is misunderstood with the religious identity,” he added.

“When a Marathi speaks in defense of his or her identity that is the regional identity. When a Kashmiri speaks about the same identity and the same dignity. It’s anti-national,” he said.

Member of Parliament Manish Tewari said the Supreme Court judgment on the issue needs to be reviewed.

“I think the grounds of review are embedded in the judgment itself. So therefore if the speculation is correct, that the statehood would be restored, that is one part of the problem but the pretentious precedent that this judgment sets is something which cannot be allowed to stand because it has implications far beyond J&K,” he said.

CPI(M) MLA MY Tarigami asked what crime the people of Jammu and Kashmir had committed that the statehood was taken away.

Tarigami said he did not agree with the Supreme Court verdict on abrogation of Article 370. “You made Kashmir a jail and took a decision for us. This is not what the constituent assembly imagined,” he said.

Politician and activist from Kargil, Sajjad Kargili, stressed that the Congress should not raise only the demand for the Sixth Schedule but also that for statehood for Ladakh, and said the National Conference should also raise the issue of rights of the people of Ladakh.

“On August 5, 2019, when J&K was split forcefully, it was said aspirations of people of Ladakh have been considered. In the last six years, no aspirations of the people of Ladakh have been fulfilled,” he alleged.

HC restores permission to Ludhiana trust to run Langar at Panchtarni

HC restores permission to Ludhiana trust to run Langar at Panchtarni

Jammu, Jul 23: The High Court of J&K and Ladakh at Jammu directed the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) to accord permission to Bhole Bhandari Charitable Trust, Ludhiana, to set up a traditional Langar at Panchtarni for the ongoing Amarnathji Yatra.

The court has given SASB one week’s time for compliance beginning July 22, 2025.

Justice Rahul Bharti of the High Court of J&K and Ladakh at Jammu, vide his judgment dated July 22, 2025, in WP(C) No 1185/2025, gave this direction to SASB while allowing the petition filed by Bhole Bhandari Charitable Trust (registered), Ludhiana.

The court held that the trust was arbitrarily and discriminatorily excluded by the authorities this year, despite an unblemished service record of 28 years and having received a valid NOC from the Camp Director for the Amarnath Yatra in 2024.

The court observed that such exclusion violates Articles 14 and 25 of the Constitution of India, affirming the fundamental right to perform service as a part of religious practice.

Rejecting the reply and objections of the respondents, Justice Bharti held that the petitioner (trust) had been victimised arbitrarily at the hands of the respondents (SASB and others), who “instead of being guided and governed by a policy and principle” were “being led by personal preferences and picks.”

“The respondents are hereby directed to immediately entertain the pending request of the petitioner-Bhole Bhandari Charitable Trust for being accorded permission to set up langar at Panchtarni for the remainder of this year’s Amarnath Yatra,” the court ruled.

Bhole Bhandari Charitable Trust Vice President, Bharat Bhushan Bharti, General Secretary Parveen Goel, and trustee Rajan Gupta said, ‘We are humbled by this judgment and grateful to the High Court for upholding truth and justice. Bhole Bhandari Charitable Trust remains committed to selfless service of the yatris, as we have done for nearly three decades. We appeal to the SASB for urgent compliance so we can resume serving devotees without delay.”

J&K farmers face uncertainty due to low returns, lack of market access

J&K farmers face uncertainty due to low returns, lack of market access

Srinagar, Jul 23: The Government of India has acknowledged that farmers across several states, including Jammu and Kashmir, have been compelled to sell their crops at a loss, despite increases in Minimum Support Prices (MSP) and efforts to expand crop insurance and infrastructure.

Responding to a Starred Question in the ongoing monsoon session in Lok Sabha, Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said that while MSPs for 22 mandated crops have been significantly raised since 2018-19, procurement remains limited.

“The MSP regime ensures a return of at least 50% over the weighted average cost of production,” the minister said in a written reply. “However, farmers may choose to sell in the open market or to government agencies, depending on what is more beneficial.” Chouhan cited data showing procurement of 1,175 lakh metric tonnes of crops valued at Rs 3.33 lakh crore in 2024–25 (up to June 30).

However, he acknowledged gaps in implementation, particularly in states like Haryana, Jharkhand, and Jammu and Kashmir.

To address income disparities, the minister highlighted several central schemes such as the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) for crop insurance, the Agriculture Infrastructure Fund (AIF) to strengthen post-harvest systems, and support for Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) to improve farmers’ bargaining power.

Digital platforms like the National Agriculture Market (e-NAM), and integrations with commerce networks like ONDC and GeM, are also being promoted to curb distress sales.

A committee was formed in July 2022 to suggest reforms for a more scientific and autonomous MSP mechanism and to modernize agricultural marketing systems.

For regions like Jammu and Kashmir, the government is also promoting organic farming under the Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY), with cluster-based initiatives in hilly districts.

Suhail Bukhari, an officer in the Jammu and Kashmir Agriculture Department, said that poor market access, especially in Kashmir, severely limits farmers’ income potential.

“Though Kashmir can supply vegetables during lean periods, connectivity to national and international markets is a major constraint,” he said, citing the lack of proper road and rail links for transportation of yield and absence of terminal markets or ports.

Bukhari also said that fragmented landholdings and the lack of cooperative farming models are major barriers. “Farming here is largely done on small plots. Cooperative or collective farming could help, but it’s missing,” he said.

While the government has introduced the Holistic Agriculture Development Programme (HADP) to address some of these issues, Bukhari said much more needs to be done. “Strengthening FPOs can make a real difference by helping farmers access better markets and prices,” he added.

Despite government initiatives, the implementation of MSP procurement and related schemes in Jammu and Kashmir remains uneven.

Small landholdings, limited infrastructure, and weak post-harvest systems continue to expose farmers to volatile market conditions and low returns.

Climate change existential threat of planetary proportions, rules UN court

Hindu Kush Himalaya could lose 75 pc of ice by century's end under current climate policies: Study

New Delhi, July 23: In a ground-breaking climate ruling, the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the prime judicial organ of the United Nations, on Wednesday ruled what the science “is saying that climate change is an existential threat of planetary proportions”.

Presenting the opinion in The Hague, court’s President Iwasawa Yuji said greenhouse gas emissions are “unequivocally” caused by human activities and acknowledged the “urgent and existential threat” posed by climate change.

“The consequences of climate change are severe and far-reaching. They affect both natural ecosystems and human populations. These consequences underscore the urgent and existential threat posed by climate change,” said Iwasawa.

Before the court’s 15 judges were two fundamental questions that is the obligations of states (nations) in respect of climate change: What are states’ obligations under international law to address climate change for present and future generations? And what are the legal consequences under these obligations for states failing to do so? The ICJ, the principal judicial organ of the UN, delivers its advisory opinion on the obligations of states in respect of climate change.

In response to the ruling by the ICJ, Mohamed Adow, Director of Nairobi-based think-tank Power Shift Africa, told IANS: “This ruling is a rocket boost for climate justice. The ICJ has confirmed what Africa has long demanded that rich nations must be held accountable for the damage their emissions have caused.

“For a continent like Africa — least responsible but most affected — this decision is a lifeline. It strengthens our call for reparations, debt relief, and real climate finance — not loans that deepen poverty.

“The era of polluters hiding behind vague promises is over. Africa will not be a sacrificial lamb for the excesses of others. The law now backs our moral case. It’s time for rich nations to pay their climate debt and support a just transition powered by Africa’s renewable energy potential.”

The ICJ was established by the United Nations Charter in June 1945 and began its activities in April 1946. The court is composed of 15 judges elected for a nine-year term by the General Assembly and the Security Council of the United Nations.

The seat of the court is at the Peace Palace in The Hague in the Netherlands.

Resident doctor assaulted at SMHS; colleagues protest, demand action

JKEEGA holds protest across J&K against non-regularization of engineers, vows to intensify protests if demands not met

Srinagar, July 23: A resident doctor from Uttar Pradesh was allegedly assaulted by an attendant of a patient at SMHS hospital late last night, following which his colleagues held a protest, demanding action against the culprit.

According to details available with news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), Dr Shahnawaz was allegedly assaulted by an attendant late last night in the hospital’s emergency ward after the patient died.

A CCTV video of the assault has since gone viral on social media, sparking outrage across the medical community.

Dr Shahnawaz, who was allegedly assaulted, told KNO that he was at medical reception when a patient was brought there and after checking the patient, his vitals were not recorded and he was sent to triage room for further investigation but eventually the patient died.

He said that after the death of the patient, one of the patient’s attendants came and kicked him. “We are here for the welfare and treatment of patients not to get assaulted,” he said, demanding a high-level probe into the matter.

The assault triggered a massive protest by resident doctors, interns and other staff of the Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar and its associated hospitals. They assembled inside the hospital premises, raising slogans and demanding immediate action against the perpetrator.

Meanwhile, the college administration said legal action has been initiated and an FIR (No. 11/2025) has been registered at the concerned police station.

Notably, this is the second such incident in J&K in the last few days where doctor has been assaulted. Last week a female doctor at Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu was allegedly assaulted by attendants of a patient following his death in the hospital’s emergency ward.
