Israel-Iran war stretches into second week without diplomatic breakthrough

Dubai, Jun 24: Israel warned of Iranian attacks Tuesday morning hours after US President Donald Trump announced the two Middle Eastern countries had agreed to a “complete and total ceasefire.”

Israel’s Magen David Zafon rescue services said at least three people were killed and eight injured in the early morning barrage. A residential building in Israel’s south sustained heavy damage, according to emergency responders.

Waves of missiles sent Israelis to bomb shelters for almost two hours in Tuesday morning. (AP)

Iran strikes Israel with fresh missile attack hours after Trump’s ceasefire claim

Iran's UN ambassador says 78 people killed, over 320 injured in Israeli attacks

Tel Aviv, June 24: Hours after US President Donald Trump declared a ceasefire had been achieved, Israel sounded missile sirens and urged citizens to take shelter following new strikes launched from Iran.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed incoming missile threats, stating that defensive units were actively working to intercept them.

Emergency services reported that a ballistic missile had hit a building in Beersheba.

While no immediate injuries were recorded, Magen David Adom confirmed that teams had been deployed to the scene to assess the impact.

The missile barrage came shortly after Iran’s announcement that it had halted all military operations against Israel as of 4 a.m. local time.

However, Iranian authorities also clarified that their ceasefire was conditional — dependent on Israel ceasing its own military actions.

This apparent contradiction followed Trump’s assertion on his social media platform, Truth Social, that a ceasefire had been reached.

He made the claim after Iran fired missiles at US military bases in Qatar. Trump posted that both Israel and Iran had agreed to halt hostilities.

However, Tehran swiftly denied receiving any formal ceasefire agreement or proposal from the United States. Iran’s Foreign Minister reiterated that Israel had initiated the war and added that Tehran had paused its military operations from 4 a.m. local time, contingent on reciprocal de-escalation from Tel Aviv. Israel has not issued any official response to Trump’s ceasefire announcement.

The conflict between Iran and Israel, now in its 12th day, began after Israel launched “Operation Rising Lion,” targeting Iranian military and nuclear infrastructure.

Since then, the region has seen continuous missile exchanges between the two nations. Iran has reportedly suffered approximately 400 casualties, while Israel has recorded around 24 deaths.

The situation intensified further when the US entered the conflict, launching precision strikes on three major Iranian nuclear facilities –Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan — prompting heightened alerts across the Middle East.

Trump announces Israel-Iran ceasefire, but no confirmation yet from Tehran or Tel Aviv

12 US states sue Trump administration over 'illegal tariffs'

New Delhi, June 24: US President Donald Trump has declared that a “complete and total” ceasefire between Israel and Iran will take effect within hours, following nearly two weeks of escalating hostilities, reports BBC and CNN.

The announcement, made on social media, claims both nations have agreed to halt military operations, with a full cessation of conflict expected “upon the 24th hour.” However, as of now, neither Iran nor Israel has officially confirmed that a ceasefire has been agreed.

The announcement follows an uptick in regional tensions. Just hours earlier, Iran fired missiles at the US-run Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar in retaliation for American strikes on its nuclear sites over the weekend.

The Pentagon reported no casualties, and Qatari authorities confirmed that all incoming projectiles were intercepted. Doha strongly condemned the attack, calling it a “flagrant violation” of Qatari sovereignty.

President Trump described Iran’s retaliatory strikes as a “very weak” response and thanked Tehran for what he claimed was “early notice” of the attack.

According to US media reports including CNN citing unnamed officials, Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani played a key mediating role in brokering the ceasefire. Qatar is believed to have engaged Iranian officials directly after missile attacks on US installations in the region.

Iranian state media has so far referred to Trump’s announcement merely as a “claim,” with no official statement from Tehran confirming any such agreement.

KEEMA demands action after fatal transformer blast in Budgam

Power supply affected in several Kashmir areas as KPDCL announces shutdown

Srinagar, June 23: The Kashmir Electrical Equipment Manufacturers Association (KEEMA) has expressed deep sorrow and outrage over the recent transformer explosion in Budgam, which claimed one life and left several others critically injured.

In a statement, KEEMA extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and expressed solidarity with those injured, calling for justice, accountability, and immediate corrective measures.

Terming the incident a “man-made disaster” rather than an accident, KEEMA blamed the tragedy on systemic negligence and the continued use of substandard, uncertified electrical equipment. “Despite our repeated warnings to the government and the Power Development Department (PDD), non-compliant materials continue to be deployed, putting lives at risk,” said KEEMA President Raja Nayeem Ahmed.

According to the association, preliminary findings indicate that the transformer involved lacked valid ISI certification and had not undergone the mandatory quality checks. KEEMA described this as a case of “criminal negligence” and demanded the immediate registration of an FIR against both the installing agency and the supplier involved. “Those responsible must be booked under relevant provisions of Indian law. Continued silence from authorities is unacceptable,” the statement read.

KEEMA also highlighted that in its 50-year history, not a single mishap has occurred involving equipment certified by its member manufacturers. “This tragic incident underscores the danger of bypassing certified local suppliers in favour of uncertified and dubious alternatives,” the statement added.

Calling on Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to take urgent cognisance, KEEMA demanded a comprehensive, independent, and time-bound judicial inquiry into the blast to establish both individual and institutional culpability. It further called for strict enforcement of standards across the power sector to prevent future tragedies.

KEEMA reiterated its willingness to assist the government with technical expertise but emphasised that appeals alone are no longer sufficient. “This is not just a tragedy—it is a reckoning. Justice delayed is not only justice denied, it is death repeated,” the statement concluded.

MeT predicts hot, humid weather today

0
Srinagar hotter than Jammu, sizzles at 34.8 degrees Celsius

Srinagar, Jun 23: A relentless heatwave continued to grip Kashmir, with temperatures soaring well above normal across most areas. The Meteorological Centre Srinagar issued a fresh advisory, warning of continued hot and humid weather in the region through June 24, followed by a shift to potentially stormy and wet conditions later in the week.

On Monday, Srinagar recorded a maximum temperature of 34.6 degrees Celsius, which is 4.8 degrees Celsius above normal, making it one of the hottest days this season.

Other areas in Kashmir also reported abnormally high temperatures with Qazigund recording 33.4 degrees Celsius, 4 degrees Celsius above normal; Kupwara 33.5 degrees Celsius, 2.9 degrees Celsius above normal, Kokernag 32.6 degrees Celsius, 3.6 degrees Celsius above normal, Gulmarg, typically cooler, touched 23 degrees Celsius, 3 degrees Celsius above normal, and Pahalgam remained relatively mild at 24 degrees Celsius.

In contrast, parts of Jammu reported below-normal temperatures due to recent spells of rain. Jammu city recorded 36.6 degrees Celsius, 4.2 degrees Celsius below normal, while Banihal, Batote, and Bhaderwah also stayed closer to or below seasonal averages.

According to Srinagar MeT Centre, the weather is expected to change beginning June 25, likely to bring much-needed relief from the heat.

The forecast indicates that on 24, there will be continued hot and humid weather with a chance of isolated rain and thundershowers. From June 25 to 27, the weather will be generally cloudy with intermittent moderate rain and thundershowers, and the possibility of heavy rainfall at isolated places in the Jammu division.

From June 28 to July 2, there will be intermittent rain likely at scattered locations across both Kashmir and Jammu divisions.

A weather advisory has been issued for June 25 to 27, warning of moderate to heavy rainfall and intense showers in parts of Jammu division, risk of flash floods in vulnerable areas, landslides, mudslides, and shooting stones in hilly terrains, and waterlogging in low-lying urban areas and rise in river and stream levels. Farmers have been advised to suspend irrigation, spraying, and fertiliser application during this period to avoid damage to crops and agricultural infrastructure.

UN Security Council holds emergency meeting on US strikes in Iran

UN Security Council holds emergency meeting on US strikes in Iran

New Delhi, Jun 23: An emergency session of the UN Security Council headquarters convened yesterday in New York as the world grappled with the fallout from the United States’ bombing of Iran’s nuclear sites, an action that Secretary-General António Guterres called a “perilous turn” in West Asia or the Middle East. The escalation, which saw U.S. airstrikes on key Iranian nuclear facilities, has prompted fears of a broader regional war and raised alarms over the future of the global nuclear non-proliferation regime.

Guterres, addressing the Council, urged an immediate halt to military actions and called for the protection of civilians, the safeguarding of maritime routes, and a return to diplomacy. “We risk descending into a rathole of retaliation after retaliation,” he warned. The Secretary-General emphasised the need for full access for IAEA inspectors and reaffirmed the importance of the Non-Proliferation Treaty as a pillar of international security.

Miroslav Jenča, Assistant Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, described the U.S. strikes on Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan as a “dangerous escalation.” In swift retaliation, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launched dozens of missiles into Israel, while Israel confirmed it had struck military sites across Iran, including in Tehran and Yazd. The human toll is mounting. Iran reported 430 dead and more than 3,500 injured, most of them civilians. Israel, for its part, said 25 of its citizens have been killed since the exchanges began. IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi detailed damage to Iran’s nuclear infrastructure. He confirmed visible craters at Fordow, damage to uranium conversion buildings at Isfahan, and direct hits on the Natanz enrichment site, suggesting the use of ground-penetrating and cruise missiles. While Iran has reported no increase in radiation levels, Grossi warned that such attacks could have “great consequences” and again called for restraint and dialogue.

US defends pre-emptive Strike

The US delegate defended the operation, saying it aimed to dismantle Iran’s “rapidly escalating nuclear threat” and support Israel under the principle of collective self-defence. “For decades, Iran has stonewalled diplomacy and spread terrorism,” she said, adding that Iran’s nuclear activities had reached an “unacceptable threshold.” Referring to President Donald Trump’s remarks, she warned Tehran that any retaliation, direct or indirect, would be met with “devastating” consequences. Israel’s representative called the strikes “historic,” thanking Washington for “removing the greatest existential threat facing the free world.” He framed the mission as an act of necessity and accused Iran of using diplomacy as cover while advancing its weapons programme.

Iran denounces ‘Illegal Aggression’; vows proportionate response

Iran’s envoy delivered a defiant response, calling the strikes an act of “blatant aggression” orchestrated by Israel and enabled by the U.S. “Netanyahu has hijacked American foreign policy,” he declared, vowing that Iran’s armed forces would decide the timing and nature of its “proportionate response.” Tehran rejected claims of pursuing nuclear weapons, accused Washington of hypocrisy and imperialism, and called for Security Council action under Chapter VII of the UN Charter. “If this Council fails to act,” he warned, “the stain of complicity will forever remain.” He also accused the U.S. of derailing upcoming nuclear talks by supporting Israel’s preemptive strike on June 15, just two days before scheduled diplomatic engagements. “How can we return to something we never left?” he asked.

Council Divided

The meeting laid deep divisions within the Council. Russia condemned the U.S. strikes as a “flagrant breach” of international law and accused Washington of once again flouting the UN Charter for geopolitical ends. Recalling the 2003 Iraq invasion, Russia said, “History has taught the U.S. nothing.”

China echoed the condemnation and urged support for a draft resolution to denounce attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities. “Dialogue remains the only viable solution,” China’s representative said.

France and the United Kingdom struck a more cautious tone. Both called on Iran to de-escalate and return to negotiations but noted they did not take part in the strikes. “This is a pivotal moment for the region,” said the UK representative, while France urged Iran to halt its nuclear build-up. Other Council members voiced growing alarm. Kuwait, speaking for the Gulf Cooperation Council, warned of spillover conflict. Iraq condemned the targeting of nuclear sites as a dangerous precedent and reported repeated violations of its airspace. Sierra Leone criticised the absence of a self-defence justification and warned of undermining the Council’s credibility.

South Korea, Panama, and Denmark all emphasised that military action cannot resolve the crisis. The Republic of Korea called for a renewed diplomatic process, while Denmark urged Tehran to re-engage in negotiations. Slovenia highlighted concern over the “unclear nature” of Iran’s nuclear programme, while Greece and Somalia backed expanded IAEA access and the creation of a nuclear-free West Asia. Pakistan and Algeria defended Iran’s right to peaceful nuclear energy, condemning attacks on safeguarded sites as violations of international law. Guyana, presiding over the Council this month, called for an end to the “tit-for-tat loop of violence.”
