JKCSF raises alarm over water diversion, environmental degradation in Tangmarg, Gulmarg

Tangmarg, June 18: Jammu & Kashmir Civil Society Forum (JKCSF), led by Chairman Abdul Qayoom Wani, has raised serious concerns over what it describes as the “loot” of water from the Ferozpora Nalla and the ongoing environmental degradation in Tangmarg and Gulmarg. Wani called for immediate intervention, terming the diversion of water as “theft, not policy” and “injustice, not governance.”

Speaking on behalf of the people of Tangmarg, Magam, Pattan, and surrounding areas, Wani said the Ferozpora Nalla—a vital water source for drinking, agriculture, and horticulture—is being diverted to other districts through large underground pipelines. “This sacred and life-sustaining stream has nourished the region for generations. Yet today, people living along its banks are left to suffer,” he said.

In a statement issued to *Greater Kashmir*, the JKCSF Chairman said, “This water is not ordinary—it is the lifeline of our region. It is the source of drinking water for lakhs of people, the backbone of our agriculture, and the sustainer of our horticulture, on which thousands of families depend for survival. From paddy fields to apple orchards, from domestic use to livestock, Ferozpora Nalla supports every form of life in Tangmarg and its adjoining belts. Yet today, the people of Tangmarg, Magam, Pattan, and nearby villages are watching helplessly as their rightful share is siphoned away, leaving their taps dry, their fields barren, and their orchards dying. This is not just mismanagement—it is an open betrayal of the people who have protected and relied on this stream for centuries. The water of Ferozpora belongs to us, and we will not allow it to be stolen any longer.”

“The unauthorized and unjust diversion of water to other districts, done without any public consent or consultation, is deeply discriminatory. Such a major decision, taken without transparency, environmental clearance, or a fair water-sharing policy, amounts to nothing less than institutional betrayal. It is both legally questionable and morally indefensible,” he added.

“Adding to the crisis is the reckless use of heavy machinery, including JCBs, in the stream to alter its natural flow. This practice, despite being prohibited by the Supreme Court, continues unabated. The result is the destruction of the stream’s ecological balance, erosion of its bed, lowering of water levels, and damage to aquatic life. These irresponsible actions must be stopped immediately to preserve what remains of this vital natural resource,” he said.

He said Ferozpora Nalla is not just a water source—it is central to the identity, ecology, and economy of Tangmarg. Tangmarg and its adjoining areas are among the most visited tourist zones in Jammu & Kashmir, and any damage to its water bodies directly affects tourism. But sadly, the region continues to suffer from widespread environmental degradation. Unregulated tree-cutting, unauthorized construction, lack of scientific waste disposal by hotels in Tangmarg and Gulmarg, and the hazardous use of chemicals for snow melting have collectively poisoned our soil and water. These chemicals seep into the environment after snowmelt, affecting forests, harming public health, and endangering biodiversity.

He said that the ongoing violation of the official construction ban in Gulmarg worsens the situation. Concrete structures continue to rise unchecked, threatening the ecological balance and natural charm of this world-famous tourist spot. The government must intervene urgently to halt such unregulated development. Instead of allowing rampant construction in ecologically fragile Gulmarg, the administration should promote tourism infrastructure from Narbal to Tangmarg, enabling people from surrounding villages to benefit from tourism and hospitality opportunities. This inclusive model would decentralize tourism and promote economic equity.

Furthermore, the establishment of high-tech sewage treatment plants in Gulmarg, Tangmarg, and Baba Reshi has become indispensable. These facilities will help manage the increasing waste generated by tourists and local populations alike and are essential to protecting the fragile ecology of these areas.

At the same time, the long-pending alternate road project to Gulmarg, starting from Bedran village of Magam Budgam, which passes through Pinjoora, Goigam, Wussan, Bungam, and finally reaches Drung, must be expedited. This route holds the potential to connect untouched tourist destinations like Chek-Freshte-reshi, Gogaldara, Bederkot, Darakshi, Ringawali, Danwas, and Rangmarg, opening avenues for development and livelihood in the overlooked parts of our region, he added.

Expressing shock, Wani said that despite being a key destination, Tangmarg continues to be neglected in terms of basic public infrastructure, particularly healthcare. The Chest Disease Hospital in Tangmarg, established in 1931, remains functionally outdated. The hospital lacks essential equipment such as a central heating system, CT scan, MRI, portable ultrasound, modern blood bank, and operation theatres. The same is true for hospitals in Kunzer, Magam, and Pattan, where even routine diagnostics are unavailable. Patients—including tourists—are forced to travel to Srinagar or Baramulla for basic treatment, despite the presence of qualified doctors and dedicated paramedical staff. This continued neglect is a denial of the right to health and dignity.

“The long-awaited Mini Secretariat at Tangmarg, the foundation stone of which was laid in 2012, still lies incomplete due to unknown reasons. This delay is unjustifiable. The government must release a white paper on the status of the project and take necessary steps to complete it. Once completed, the Mini Secretariat will bring all key public offices under one roof and will save the people from the hassle of running from one office to another for basic administrative work,” Wani added.

Another serious concern, he said, is the forced inclusion of more than 32 villages under the jurisdiction of the Gulmarg Development Authority (GDA). This move has created deep distress among the locals, who are not even allowed to construct essential shelters like cow sheds. This restriction on basic rural livelihood activities must end, and these villages should be immediately delinked from the GDA to prevent further exploitation of their rights.

Talking about another issue, he said, “Let me bring to your notice another serious issue concerning the people of Gulmarg/Tangmarg. Since people of Gulmarg/Tangmarg are purely dependent on tourism, which has suffered a setback, the people of the area are economically crushed. But it is unfortunate that the PDD is charging exorbitant rates from its consumers—poor people living in sheds and kothas who deserve welfare measures like concessions in electricity tariff as per AAY and BPL norms—which is sheer injustice. The authorities should conduct a survey and take necessary steps for the benefit of these poor people.”

“All these issues—from water diversion to environmental destruction and healthcare collapse—are deeply interconnected. They reflect a long-standing pattern of administrative apathy, policy failures, and socio-political marginalization. The people of Tangmarg have shown immense patience, but silence can no longer be sustained in the face of such gross injustice.”

Raising the issue of lack of sports infrastructure in the area, Wani said, “Another important issue that needs immediate attention is the condition of sports infrastructure in our region. Playgrounds at Kunzer, Tangmarg, Shrai, and other areas lack basic facilities like proper turf, dressing rooms, fencing, and maintained outfields. While we talk about protecting our youth from drug abuse and social evils, we must also provide them the means to engage positively. Investment in sports infrastructure is essential to motivate youth, help them pursue sports as a career, enable them to compete with athletes from other parts of the country, and keep our youth away from this drug menace.”

He said that despite the valiant efforts of SDPO Tangmarg, SHO Gulmarg, SHO Tangmarg, and SHO Kunzer to curb the drug menace, this social evil is gripping our area at an alarming pace. “I want to assure these dedicated officers that JKCSF will stand shoulder to shoulder with them in the fight against this social evil.”

Further, Wani said, “JKCSF appeals to Hon’ble MLA Farooq Ahmad Shah Sb, Former Minister Ghulam Hassan Mir Sb, Former MLA Mohammad Abbas Wani Sb, PDP Leader Shabir Ahmad Mir Sb, AIP Leader Adil Nazir Sb, socio-political figure Tejinder Singh Ji, socio-political activist Munshi Mukhtar Sb, Bar Association Tangmarg, Traders’ Associations of Tangmarg, Kunzer, Pattan, and Magam, the local Journalists’ Associations, and to all responsible public figures and community leaders, to come together on a common platform, setting aside political, social, or organizational differences for the greater cause of the area, especially Tangmarg and Gulmarg.”

“To facilitate this, JKCSF has decided to organize a seminar in the coming days where all political parties, social and religious organizations, bar associations, trade unions, traders’ associations, pony and guide unions, hoteliers, media personnel, and prominent public figures of the area will be invited. The aim is to draft a Common Minimum Programme to resist the continued loot of our water resources, fight against environmental degradation, and drug abuse,” he added.

As the Chairman of JKCSF, Wani said, “I urge all our district presidents and sub-divisional leaders to stand up in their respective areas—against drug abuse, social evils, rising economic injustice, and environmental issues. JKCSF is ready to act as a bridge between all sections of society committed to peace, justice, and sustainable development.”

He warned, “If these concerns are not addressed immediately, JKCSF will not hold back in launching a peaceful, democratic campaign across the region, taking all the stakeholders on board to safeguard the rights, resources, and dignity of our people. We do not seek confrontation; we seek fairness. We are ready to fight—peacefully, lawfully, and relentlessly—for what is ours. We belong to Tangmarg. We believe in Tangmarg. And if the time comes, we are prepared to bleed for Tangmarg.”

Furthermore, Wani said, “Finally, I, on behalf of JKCSF Tangmarg, want to pay heartfelt tribute to the legendary figures of Tangmarg who, despite different political ideologies, played a significant role in preserving and protecting our environment and local water resources. We salute these stalwarts and feel their absence deeply in these challenging times. It is both our responsibility and obligation to remember and honour their legacy. These legends, namely:”

Apni Party organises Shikara rally at Dal Lake to revive J&K tourism

Srinagar, June 18: Apni Party on Wednesday organised a Shikara rally at the famous Dal Lake here to send a message to the people of the country that Kashmir was eagerly waiting for them and was as safe as any other part of the country.

Apni Party chief Altaf Bukhari said houseboat and shikarawalas, hoteliers, and taxi drivers in Kashmir were under duress and steps must be taken to help them.

“This rally has been organised to send a message to the people of the country that Kashmir is waiting for you and is safe. Visit Kashmir… your safety is guaranteed. Kashmir is as safe as any other part of the country,” Bukhari told reporters after flagging off the rally.

He said the rally was held to also show solidarity with the tourism stakeholders.

“Be it the houseboat and shikarawalas, hoteliers, or tempo and taxi drivers, they are under duress, but we stand with them,” he said.

The Apni Party chief also appealed to the government to help the tourism stakeholders.

“There is a need for handholding… they need some help and that help should be provided to them,” Bukhari added.

The tourism trade came to a standstill in most of Kashmir after the April 22 terror attack on tourists at Baisaran in Pahalgam, in which 26 people — 25 tourists and a local service provider — were killed.

Pahalgam terror attack assault on entire humanity, says PM Modi

Canada, June 18: Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a G7 Outreach Session where he called upon countries to strengthen the fight against terrorism and called Pahalgam terror attack not just an assault on India but also on the entire humanity, the Ministry of External Affairs noted in an official statement.

He made the remarks while addressing the G7 Outreach session on the theme ‘Energy Security: diversification, technology and infrastructure to ensure access and affordability in a changing world’, where he br

As per the MEA, PM Modi, emphasising security challenges, called upon countries to strengthen the global fight against terrorism. Thanking the global community for their strong support to India in its fight against terrorism, he expressed that the Pahalgam terror attack was not just an assault on India but on the entire humanity.

“Terrorism is an enemy of humanity. It is against all countries that uphold democratic values”, he said. He called for strict action against countries that support and promote terrorism and noted that there should be no double standards in dealing with terrorism and those who support terrorism should never be rewarded.

“On one hand, we are quick to impose all kinds of sanctions based on our own preferences. On the other hand, countries that openly support terrorism are rewarded,” said PM Modi.

Calling terrorism a grave threat to humanity, PM Modi put forth three pressing questions for the international community to ponder over

Will countries understand the grave threat posed by terrorism only when they become a target?

How can perpetrators of terror and their victims be equated ?

Will global institutions be mute spectators to terrorism?

As per the statement by the MEA, PM Modi expressed that uncertainty and conflicts in various parts of the world have had a debilitating impact on the countries of the Global South, and India took it as its responsibility to make the voice of the Global South heard on the world stage. He underlined that it was important for the world to understand the priorities and concerns of the Global South if the international community was serious about a sustainable future.

“Unfortunately, the Global South countries suffer the most from uncertainty and conflicts. They are the first to be hit by crises related to food, fuel, fertiliser, and finance. India considers it its responsibility to bring the priorities and concerns of the Global South to the world stage,” PM Modi said in his remarks.

Khamenei declares 'battle has begun' as Iran fires hypersonic missile at Israel

Tel Aviv, June 18: Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei declared that the “battle has begun” after Tehran launched a hypersonic missile at Israel. This escalation has intensified the already volatile conflict, as the military confrontation between Iran and Israel enters its sixth day on Wednesday.

Israel has carried out a series of devastating airstrikes on Iranian territory, reportedly killing at least 224 individuals. Among the casualties are senior military figures, nuclear scientists, and civilians. In retaliation, Iran launched several attacks on Israeli targets, resulting in the deaths of at least 24 people, including women and children, according to Israeli officials.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Israeli military confirmed the detection of additional missile launches originating from Iran.

The situation has drawn global concern, prompting US President Donald Trump to cut short his participation in the G7 summit in Canada. Before departing, he expressed firm support for Israel and issued a stark warning to residents of Tehran, advising them to evacuate in anticipation of potential escalation.

The conflict erupted last Friday when Israel initiated a large-scale offensive aimed at dismantling Iran’s nuclear and military capabilities. This action prompted swift and aggressive retaliation from Tehran, pushing the region closer to the brink of a broader war.

These developments come amid ongoing but fragile diplomatic efforts between Iran and the US to revive negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the media, stating that Israel’s actions have significantly delayed Iran’s nuclear ambitions. “I believe we have set them back a very, very long time,” he asserted.

US Prez Trump invited PM Modi to US, says FS Misri

US Prez Trump invited PM Modi to US, says FS Misri

New Delhi, June 18: Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri on Wednesday said that US President Donald Trump invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit Washington after his trip to Canada.

In a 35-minute-long phone call between the two leaders, Misri said, “President Trump asked if PM Modi could stop by the US on his return from Canada, but the Prime Minister expressed his inability due to prior commitments. However, both leaders agreed to try to meet soon.”

“They also discussed the Indo-Pacific and the vital role of the QUAD. Prime Minister Modi invited President Trump to India for the next QUAD summit, and President Trump accepted the invitation,” Misri said.

During this conversation, the Prime Minister also conveyed to US President Donald Trump that India does not seek and will never accept any mediation on matters related to Pakistan.

This was also the first exchange between PM Modi and President Trump since the Pahalgam terror attack and India’s retaliatory Operation Sindoor.

The call took place after a scheduled in-person meeting between the two leaders on the sidelines of the G7 Summit was cancelled due to Trump’s early return to the US.

“The phone conversation was held at the request of President Trump,” said Misri, adding that PM Modi used the opportunity to detail India’s measured military response to the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, which killed 26 innocent tourists.

The attack was claimed by The Resistance Front, a group affiliated with the Pakistan-based terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba.

“Prime Minister Modi said that on the night of May 6-7, India had targeted only terrorist hideouts in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. India’s actions were very measured, precise, and non-escalatory,” Misri said.

“India had made it clear that it would respond to Pakistan’s ‘goli’ with ‘gola’ (a strong, proportionate military response),” he said.

Operation Sindoor saw India strike nine high-value terror infrastructure sites in Pakistan and PoK. In response, Pakistan launched military strikes not only on Indian military infrastructure but also on civilian and religious sites, prompting further escalation.

The Foreign Secretary also disclosed that on the night of May 9, US Vice President Vance conveyed to PM Modi that Pakistan could launch a major retaliatory strike.

“Prime Minister Modi told him clearly that if this happens, India will respond with even greater force. India’s strong counterattack on the night of May 9-10 caused heavy damage to Pakistan’s military. Several of their airbases were rendered inoperable,” Misri said.

He noted that following India’s forceful retaliation, Pakistan approached India with a ceasefire request.

“Prime Minister Modi stated that the ceasefire was agreed to only at the request of Pakistan and that India does not want mediation. He made it clear that at no point during this episode were India-US trade talks or third-party mediation discussed,” Misri stated.

“The halt to military action was discussed directly between the two countries through existing military channels,” he added.

Reiterating India’s long-standing position, Misri said, “Prime Minister Modi stressed that India has never accepted mediation, does not accept it, and will never accept it. There is complete political unanimity in India on this issue.”

President Trump, according to Misri, fully understood India’s position and expressed support for its fight against terrorism. PM Modi also informed Trump that India will consider any terror act emanating from Pakistan as an act of war, and that Operation Sindoor remains ongoing.

The conversation also covered international developments, including the Iran-Israel conflict and the Russia-Ukraine war.

Both leaders agreed that direct dialogue between Moscow and Kyiv is necessary for peace.

Parents urge MEA for immediate evacuation of Indian students amid escalating tensions in Iran

Dubai, June 18: Israeli strikes have killed at least 585 people across Iran and wounded 1,326 others, a human rights group said Wednesday.

The Washington-based group Human Rights Activists said it had identified 239 of the dead as civilians and 126 as security personnel.

The group, which also provided detailed casualty figures during the 2022 protests over the death of Mahsa Amini, crosschecks local reports in the Islamic Republic against a network of sources it has developed in the country.

Iran has not been publishing regular death tolls during the conflict and has minimized casualties in the past. Its last update, issued Monday, put the death toll at 224 people killed and 1,277 others wounded.

Trump to meet Pakistan Army chief Asim Munir over lunch

0

Washington, June 18: US President Donald Trump will host Pakistan’s Army Chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, at the White House on Wednesday (local time).

The lunch meeting is scheduled to take place at 1:00 p.m. in the White House’s Cabinet Room, as per the official presidential schedule.

The reports of the meeting come just days after the White House denied that Munir was invited to the US Army’s 250th-anniversary celebrations held on June 14, contradicting earlier claims of his attendance at the parade.

Munir, who arrived in Washington on Sunday for a five-day official trip, is also expected to meet US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, according to Pakistani daily Dawn.

The visit has been described as “primarily bilateral in nature” and aimed at reinforcing military and strategic ties between the two nations.

This meeting also comes amid the escalating hostilities between Iran and Israel, a conflict that entered its sixth consecutive day. While Trump demanded “unconditional surrender” from Iran, the Pakistani Army chief had earlier expressed support for Tehran.

This is Munir’s first official trip to the United States since the April 22 terror attack on tourists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam, which killed 26 civilians.

The attack, claimed by Pakistan-based terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba’s offshoot, The Resistance Front, drew strong condemnation from India and heightened tensions with Pakistan.

India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar linked the Pahalgam massacre to what he termed as the Pakistani Army Chief’s “extreme religious outlook.”

Speaking to reporters last month, Jaishankar asserted, “To understand that, you have to see that on the Pakistani side, especially their Army chief, who is driven by an extreme religious outlook. There is clearly some connection between the views that were expressed and the manner the attack was carried out.”

The conflict subsided after Pakistan reached out to India with a ceasefire proposal.

Trump had claimed credit for brokering the truce, stating that he used trade leverage to encourage both parties to step back.

However, New Delhi swiftly denied that the United States played any mediatory role.

While Munir’s visit is being presented as an effort to stabilise military ties, it has not been without controversy. Supporters of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan staged a protest outside the Four Seasons Hotel in Washington, where Munir is staying.

The protesters, chanting slogans and accusing him of human rights abuses, labelled the Army Chief as the “Pakistanio ke qatil” and “Islamabad ke Katil,” turning the luxury hotel into an impromptu demonstration site.

One protester was heard shouting “Geedad, geedad, geedad (jackal, jackal, jackal)” — a pejorative expression meaning cowardliness and deception — as vehicles carrying officials arrived at the venue.

The episode, captured on video, quickly circulated on social media and was widely seen as a public embarrassment for the Pakistani military establishment.

PM Modi wraps up Canada G7 visit, heads to Croatia for final leg of Europe tour

New Delhi, June 18: Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded the Canadian leg of his three-nation tour, describing his visit as “very productive” after participating in the G7 Summit and holding a string of bilateral meetings with world leaders. He has now departed for Croatia, where he is scheduled to conclude his overseas trip.

In a tweet posted just before departure, PM Modi wrote, “Concluding a productive Canada visit. Thankful to the Canadian people and Government for hosting a successful G7 Summit, which witnessed fruitful discussions on diverse global issues. We remain committed to furthering global peace, prosperity and sustainability.”

At the G7 outreach session in Kananaskis, Prime Minister Modi made a strong pitch for the ethical and sustainable use of Artificial Intelligence. “AI itself is an energy-intensive technology. If there is any way to sustainably fulfil the energy requirements of a technology-driven society, it is through renewable energy,” he said, underlining India’s leadership in the clean energy transition.

He also sounded a note of caution regarding the proliferation of deepfakes, calling it a “cause of great concern.” Modi suggested watermarking or mandatory disclosures for AI-generated content to preserve public trust and digital authenticity.

Bilateral Diplomacy on Sidelines

While in Canada, Prime Minister Modi held several bilateral meetings, including a significant first interaction with the newly elected German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Modi congratulated Merz on his recent electoral victory and assumption of office, and expressed appreciation for Germany’s solidarity following the tragic plane crash in Ahmedabad last week. Both leaders affirmed their commitment to deepening the India-Germany Strategic Partnership, which marks 25 years this year.

Discussions ranged across trade and investment, green energy, defence cooperation, and digital innovation. According to an official readout, the two leaders “agreed that terrorism constitutes a major threat to peace and stability in the world.” Modi thanked Germany for its support of India’s anti-terror efforts and expressed eagerness to host Chancellor Merz in India in the near future.
Strengthening Ties with Mexico

In another key meeting, Prime Minister Modi met Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, the first interaction since her historic election. Congratulating Sheinbaum, Modi thanked Mexico for backing India’s counter-terrorism measures and emphasised expanding economic and technological ties.

According to a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs, the two leaders discussed increasing collaboration in the fields of semiconductors, AI, quantum computing, critical minerals, and pharmaceuticals. The prospect of enhanced cooperation in start-ups, science and technology, and near-shoring manufacturing also figured in talks.

President Sheinbaum reportedly expressed strong interest in India’s strides in digital infrastructure and innovation. Both leaders agreed to intensify people-to-people and cultural exchanges and committed to furthering the shared priorities of the Global South.

A Final Stop in Croatia

Prime Minister Modi’s next and final stop is Croatia, marking the last leg of his multi-nation tour. The visit will focus on enhancing bilateral ties, especially in the areas of defence cooperation, education, tourism, and clean technology. This marks Modi’s first visit to Croatia as Prime Minister and follows a string of high-level diplomatic engagements.
