31 killed, 169 injured in suicide attack at Shia mosque in Pakistan’s capital

Islamabad, Feb 06: A suicide bomber blew himself up at a Shia mosque during Friday prayers in Pakistan’s capital, killing at least 31 people and injuring 169 others, said officials, in one of the worst terror attacks targeting the community in recent years.

The powerful explosion, which was heard from a far distance, took place at Khadijatul Kubra mosque-cum-imambargah in the Tarlai area of Islamabad, the police said in a statement.

The suicide bomber was stopped at the gate of the imambargah, but he detonated himself, police and eyewitnesses said.

At least 31 people were killed and 169 others injured in the explosion, a district administration spokesperson said in a post on X.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the blast. However, police sources said that the attacker was a foreign national and had links with Fitna al Khwaraji, a term used for Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

Citing eyewitnesses, Geo News reported that the terrorist first opened fire and then detonated himself.

TV footage showed multiple bodies lying on the floor surrounded by shards of glass and debris.

Police and Rescue 1122 personnel were involved in rescue operations.

The army troops and Rangers have cordoned off the area, and security operations are underway in and around the site of the blast.

An emergency was declared in the hospitals of the capital to deal with the situation, as the injured were being shifted to hospitals.

The attack came less than three months after a suicide bomber killed 12 people in a blast outside a district and sessions court building in Islamabad.

Friday’s attack came when Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev was visiting Pakistan. He arrived on a two-day state visit on Thursday.

President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Senate Opposition Leader Allama Raja Nasir Abbas condemned the attack.

“Targeting innocent civilians is a crime against humanity,” Zardari said.

Strongly condemning the attack, Abbas said that targeting places of worship is a direct attack on humanity, religion and social values, which cannot be tolerated under any circumstances.

According to police officials, the nature of the explosion was being probed, but the explosion seems to be a suicide attack.

Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry visited the Pakistan Institute of Medical Science (PIMS) hospital in Islamabad and met the injured.

Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Tariq Fazal Chaudhry strongly condemned the attack in a post on social media platform X, expressing grief over the loss of lives in the “cowardly act”.

“Such acts of terrorism cannot dampen the morale of the nation. The need of the hour is that we all stand united for peace, tolerance, and stability, and express solidarity with law enforcement agencies,” the minister stressed.

Chaudhry is a native of Islamabad and belongs to the area where the blast occurred.

Diesel to get costlier in J&K as govt cuts rebate by Rs 2 per litre

Srinagar, Feb 06: Diesel prices in Jammu and Kashmir will see a marginal increase following the government’s decision to reduce the rebate on High-Speed Diesel (HSD) by ₹2 per litre, a move aimed at strengthening revenue generation while safeguarding social welfare spending.

Announcing the measure during the Budget presentation, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said the government needs to explore every possible avenue to upscale revenues even as it enhances social protection for the poor. He underlined the importance of fiscal discipline through austerity and efficiency measures, along with improving the impact of public expenditure by leveraging scale, competition and private initiative.

The Chief Minister said the reduction in HSD rebate would help rationalise diesel prices and encourage a gradual shift towards cleaner technologies. He assured the House that despite the cut in rebate, diesel prices in Jammu and Kashmir would continue to remain lower than those in neighbouring states, including Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Delhi.

The move, the government said, strikes a balance between fiscal consolidation and environmental responsibility, while keeping fuel prices competitive in the region.

CM Omar defends welfare-driven, balanced Budget for J&K

Jammu, Feb 06: Asserting that despite severe financial constraints, the ruling government has taken all possible steps to extend relief to the most vulnerable sections of society, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday defended his administration’s balanced and welfare-oriented Budget.

Addressing press conference as per news agency Kashmir News Corner — KNC, CM Omar said that the Budget should not be viewed as a standalone exercise but as part of a continuous governance process.

“No Budget is an isolated document. It reflects a series of measures taken by the government over time and their gradual implementation,” he said.

The Chief Minister said that the administration has followed a welfare-oriented and people-centric approach since assuming office, laying a strong foundation over the past year.

He added that the present Budget builds upon that framework while keeping long-term fiscal stability in mind.

Omar further said that the government has consciously avoided putting undue pressure on the Union Territory’s finances. “As a responsible government, it would be imprudent to overburden the treasury or incur excessive debt merely to meet all electoral commitments in one go,” he said, adding that fiscal prudence remains central to the government’s policy.

Sajad Lone tears into J&K Budget

Sajad Lone tears into J&K Budget

Jammu, Feb 06: People’s Conference chief and Handwara MLA Sajad Lone on Friday criticised the Jammu and Kashmir government’s budget, saying it lacked political direction and was primarily drafted by bureaucrats with little improvement over the previous year.

Speaking to reporters, Lone said, “The budget is as good or as bad as it was last time. I would say it is as bad as it was last time.”

He claimed the budget reflected bureaucratic dominance rather than political decision-making. “This is a budget by the bureaucrats. There is no political input in it,” he said.

Lone also accused the government of repeatedly thanking the Centre without outlining an independent policy framework. “They are repeatedly thanking the Centre — repeatedly,” he said.

Questioning the government’s claims of fiscal constraints, Lone said the document itself did not reflect any such limitations. “Are there any restrictions in the budget? There are none. There are no financial restrictions at all,” he said, adding that even tax collection did not appear restricted.

He also criticised the dilution of the government’s earlier promise of providing 12 free LPG cylinders per year to all poor families. “Now it has been confined to Antyodaya Anna Yojana beneficiaries. This is a climbdown,” he said, expressing doubt over whether even the revised benefit would be delivered. —(KNO)
