Collective action essential to combat menace of substance abuse among youth: SSP Reasi

Jammu, June 15: Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Reasi Mukund Tibrewal has emphasised the urgent need for collective action to combat the growing menace of substance abuse among youth.

Tibrewal, while addressing the gathering in an awareness programme against drug menace at Gen Zorawar Singh Memorial auditorium in Reasi, highlighted that such initiatives played a vital role in sensitising society and encouraging community participation in safeguarding the future of young generations.

The programme was organised by the District Police Reasi in collaboration with Team Jammu, Vaishno Devi Youth Association and several other social organisations on June 14.

Demonstrating a unified commitment to combat drug abuse and be part of ongoing 100 day long “Nasha Mukt Jammu Kashmir Mahaabhiyan” initiated by the Lieutenant Governor J&K, Manoj Sinha, the District Reasi Police, Team Jammu and other organisations involving senior citizens and youth vowed to crush drug mafia and save the future of youth.

A heartrending skit by young members of Nav Durga Kala Manch, headed by Shaazi Khan, associated with Team Jammu, displayed how youth were dying and moving towards darkness after getting trapped in clutches of drug syndicates.

On the occasion, several youth came forward and provided vital information about suspected activities of drug peddlers in Reasi as well as in Katra town.

SSP Reasi, in his address, stated that while the Police was actively carrying out enforcement measures against drug trafficking and abuse, the role of parents and guardians remained equally crucial. He appealed to them to remain vigilant about their children’s daily activities, behavioural patterns, and social circles. He emphasised that timely supervision, open communication and a supportive family environment could serve as effective safeguards against drug addiction, which posed a serious threat to both individual well-being and society at large. He further urged all stakeholders to work collectively in fostering a safe, healthy, and drug-free society.

Chairman Team Jammu and spokesperson, J&K BJP, Zorawar Singh Jamwal, appreciated the proactive involvement of the public and emphasised the need for sustained community vigilance to curb drug-related activities. He highlighted that the police department was taking stringent measures to dismantle drug networks and appealed to citizens to cooperate with law enforcement agencies by sharing timely information.

He further stressed that public participation was crucial in ensuring the success of the “drug-free J&K” campaign.

Zorawar Singh Jamwal also expressed concern over the increasing inflow of narcotics into border areas through drone activities by Pakistan from across the border. He stated that such tactics posed a serious threat to the social fabric and security of the region. He called upon residents to remain vigilant, immediately report any suspicious movements or objects to the police and avoid handling unknown items.

Emphasizing the role of families and society, he urged parents, teachers, and community leaders to guide the youth towards positive and constructive activities. He further appealed for a united front against drug abuse, stating that only collective awareness, responsibility, and timely action can effectively curb this growing menace.

Youth representatives including social activists Vijay Paroch and Raghav Kesar also voiced their strong support for the campaign.

DySP, DAR, Sarabjit Singh presented vote of thanks while SP Katra, Kameshwar Puri; ASP, Reasi, Iftekhar Ahmed and SHO, Reasi, Inspector Khayatiman Khajuria were among other prominent dignitaries present on the occasion.

Chorus grows for revival of Baramulla’s Old Hospital building

Chorus grows for revival of Baramulla’s Old Hospital building

The revival of Baramulla’s old hospital building has once again emerged as a major public demand, with residents and members of the business community stressing that its restoration would significantly improve healthcare services and revive economic activity in the town centre.

The demand for reviving Baramulla’s old hospital building has gained renewed momentum, with residents and traders asserting that restoring the facility would not only strengthen healthcare access but also help rejuvenate commercial activity in the heart of the town.

Spread over more than 30 kanals of land and located in the heart of Baramulla town, the old hospital building has remained largely unutilised since healthcare services were shifted to the new Government Medical College (GMC) facility.

Locals believe that bringing the building back into use would help ensure better access to healthcare at the doorstep while also reducing the growing patient rush at GMC Baramulla.

Former president of the Traders Federation Baramulla, Muhammad Ashraf, said the business community has suffered considerable losses since the hospital was shifted from the town centre.

He said that authorities had repeatedly assured the public that the building would be converted into a New Type Primary Health Centre (NTPHC), but no tangible progress has been made so far.

“The day authorities shifted the hospital to GMC Baramulla, countless assurances were given that the hospital building will host some health facilities.

However, till date nothing has been done in this direction,” said Muhammad Ashraf.  Ashraf alleged that political interference has repeatedly stalled efforts aimed at utilising the facility.

He recalled that during the tenure of former Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, a proposal had been approved to convert the building into a Mother and Child Care Hospital, and funds amounting to Rs 2 crore were also sanctioned.

However, the plan could not materialise and remained in abeyance. He further said that a few months ago, authorities had proposed shifting some departments of GMC Baramulla to the old hospital premises and forwarded the proposal to higher authorities, but no further progress has been witnessed.

Ashraf appealed to Health Minister Sakina Itoo, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and the local MLA, Javed Hassan Beig to intervene and ensure the early revival of the old hospital building in the larger public interest.

Chowdhary Mohammad Ramzan calls for boosting domestic edible oil production

A high-level Consultative Committee meeting of the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution was held in New Delhi to discuss issues related to food security and the edible oil sector.

During the meeting, Member of Parliament Chowdhary Mohammad Ramzan highlighted India’s heavy dependence on imported edible oils and urged the Centre to take concrete measures to enhance domestic production.

Ramzan informed the committee that India imports nearly 160 lakh metric tonnes of edible oil annually, accounting for around 60 per cent of the country’s total requirement. He said the country continues to rely significantly on imports to bridge the gap between domestic demand and production, stressing that reducing import dependence is vital for ensuring long-term food and economic security.

The MP called for the full-scale implementation of the National Mission on Edible Oils and emphasised the need for an assured Minimum Support Price (MSP) for oilseeds, coupled with effective procurement support to encourage farmers to increase cultivation.

He also urged the Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare to adopt measures aimed at improving per-hectare productivity and boosting overall oilseed production across the country.

Ramzan said enhanced research, improved seed varieties and better extension services would play a key role in achieving self-reliance in the edible oil sector.

The meeting also discussed various strategies to strengthen India’s food supply chain and reduce dependence on imports of essential commodities.

The oath-taking ceremony was held at the Civil Secretariat and was attended by senior government officials and representatives from the water resources sector.

Congratulating Gupta on his appointment, the Chief Secretary expressed confidence that his extensive administrative experience and expertise in natural resource management would strengthen the Authority’s efforts towards ensuring sustainable, equitable and efficient management of water resources across the Union Territory.

The JKWRRA is a statutory body tasked with regulating and overseeing the development, management and conservation of water resources in Jammu and Kashmir. The Authority plays a key role in promoting integrated water resource management, ensuring water security and advising the government on policies for the sustainable use of water resources.

Gupta was appointed Chairperson of the JKWRRA through Notification S.O. 164 dated June 9, 2026, issued under Section 139 of the Jammu and Kashmir Water Resources (Regulation and Management) Act, 2010. His appointment came into effect upon assuming charge.

A 1991-batch Indian Forest Service (IFS) officer, Gupta brings over three decades of experience in public administration, environmental governance, forest management and natural resource conservation.

During his distinguished career, he served in several key positions in Jammu and Kashmir, including Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) and Head of Forest Force (HoFF). Additionally, Gupta has served as Chairman of the J&K Biodiversity Council, Chief Wildlife Warden, Director of Social Forestry, Director of the Forest Protection Force, Director of the J&K Forest Research Institute and Managing Director of the Jammu and Kashmir Forest Development Corporation (JKFDC).

Officials said his vast experience in environmental stewardship, watershed conservation and sustainable resource management is expected to significantly benefit the functioning of the Water Resources Regulatory Authority.

J&K’s ‘Kaladi cheese’ undergoing technological intervention at CFTRI

0
J&K’s ‘Kaladi cheese’ undergoing technological intervention at CFTRI

Sharing this significant input on his social media accounts, the Union Minister of State (independent charge) for Science & Technology and Earth Sciences, Dr. Jitendra Singh, who is also the Member Parliament from Udhampur, has stated that the intervention has led to extension of GI product’s refrigerated shelf life.

“The results achieved so far include extension of Kaladi’s refrigerated shelf life up to 21 days, without compromising quality, texture or nutritional value,” the Union Minister said, while narrating “The Kaladi Story” as part of “12 years of Seva (service) by CSIR (Council of Scientific & Industrial Research).”

DrJitendra, who is also the Union Minister of State in PMO, has revealed that the next step will be to convert this traditional food product into a commercially scalable product, that can be served in different recipes by professional food chains.

He points out that CFTRI Mysuru is the same institute which had earlier technologically helped develop millet recipes currently served, among others, by McDonald’s.

Earlier in January this year, Dr. Jitendra had asked the Directors of CSIR-Central Food Technology Research Institute (CSIR-CFTRI), Mysuru, Dr. Giridhar Parvatam, and CSIR-Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine (CSIR-IIIM), Jammu, Dr. Zabeer Ahmed, to upscale the “Kaladi”, the GI-tagged traditional dairy product of Udhampur district, for wider food applications and recipes, while strictly preserving its original flavour, texture and nutritional identity.

He had asserted that the focus should be on value addition and enhancement of shelf life, enabling Kaladi to reach national and international markets under the Government’s “One District One Product” (ODOP) initiative.

The mozzarella of Jammu- the GI tagged indigenous cheese of Udhampur, is an important part of the region’s food heritage and rural dairy economy.

Kaladi was given the Geographical Indication (GI) tag in October 2023 to officially protect its authenticity.

Made from cow or buffalo milk, Kaladi is prized for its distinctive flavour, meltability and characteristic stretchability.

However, the officials point out that traditional production methods often result in short shelf life and limited commercial scalability.

“In line with the vision of Prime Minister NarendraModi to promote indigenous products, strengthen rural livelihoods and unlock the potential of India’s traditional knowledge systems, CSIR-IIIM Jammu in collaboration with CSIR-CFTRI Mysuru launched a focussed scientific initiative under the guidance of Union Minister of State for Science and Technology DrJitendra Singh,” they trace the background of this technological intervention, presently underway at CFTRI, Mysuru.

Field studies in Udhampur, according to them, helped document traditional (Kaladi-making) practices and develop a standardised production process.

“The intervention improved (enhanced) microbial safety, extended refrigerated shelf life up to 21 days while preserving Kaladi’s authentic taste, texture and stretchability. Today this pioneering effort is paving the way for Kaladi to emerge as a nationally recognised indigenous fresh cheese blending tradition with innovation,” they assert.

The product had won praise of the Prime Minister NarendraModi also in his monthly “Mann Ki Baat” in its April 2026 edition.

“In our country, food traditions have never been confined, merely to taste. Indian cheese is an interesting part of this tradition. A few days ago, I shared information via a tweet. Two Indian cheese brands received prestigious awards at an international cheese competition held in Brazil. This achievement was widely discussed on social media. Many people have said to me that the diversity of cheese in India should also be discussed,” the Prime Minister had stated, while referring to Kaladi (Kalari) of J&K and “Chhurpi” of Ladakh.

Maintaining that a major change was taking place in India’s dairy sector, the PM observed, “Value addition in this sector has given our traditional flavours a new identity. Today, Indian cheese is making its mark globally. Be it breakfast, lunch, or dinner, the taste of India is reaching the world’s plates. Take Jammu and Kashmir’s Kalari (Kaladi) cheese – it’s known as the “Mozzarella of Kashmir.” The Gujjar-Bakarwal community has been making and eating it for generations.”

With regard to Ladakh delicacy, PM pointed out, “Meanwhile, “Chhurpi” is very popular in Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh and Ladakh. The simplicity and softness of the mountains are felt in its taste. The special feature of this cheese is that it’s made from yak milk.”

Police intensify security preparations ahead of Amarnath Yatra

Police intensify security preparations ahead of Amarnath Yatra

Specialised teams are carrying out extensive anti-sabotage checks along the entire Yatra route from Khanabal to Pahalgam, with a focus on critical locations, transit points, lodgement centres, parking areas and other vulnerable spots.

The security operations involve the use of advanced surveillance equipment, modern detection systems, trained K9 squads, bomb detection and disposal teams, and technical surveillance units to thoroughly sanitise the route and adjoining areas.

Particular attention is being paid to vehicle inspections, including checks of abandoned and unattended vehicles, to prevent any potential security threats. Search and sanitisation drives are also being conducted at railway stations, railway tracks, bridges, culverts, public utility installations and other critical infrastructure.

Authorities have established a multi-layered security grid along the Pahalgam route, with the district divided into 19 security zones. Senior officers have been assigned specific sectors to ensure effective monitoring and swift response.

As part of the security arrangements, 140 companies of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) have been deployed along the route from Anantnag to the holy cave shrine. The deployment is being supplemented by other Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) under the larger security plan approved by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Specialised units of Jammu and Kashmir Police, including Markhor teams, Snow Leopards, the Special Operations Group (SOG), Mobile Rescue Teams (MRTs) and Quick Reaction Teams (QRTs), have been stationed at strategic locations.

Security infrastructure has also been strengthened with the installation of 28 watchtowers and bunkers along the route, double the number deployed last year. More than 400 CCTV cameras equipped with facial recognition capabilities have been installed, with real-time monitoring being carried out through integrated control rooms.

Drones, anti-drone systems, night-vision devices, jammers and sniper teams have also been deployed at key locations. Road Opening Parties (ROPs), bomb disposal squads, explosive detectors, metal detectors, X-ray baggage screening systems and K9 units are being used for convoy protection and area clearance operations.

Recent mock drills conducted at locations, including the Nunwan Base Camp, tested emergency response mechanisms, evacuation procedures, crisis management capabilities and inter-agency coordination. The exercises simulated various scenarios, including security threats, medical emergencies and crowd management challenges.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Anantnag, Amod Ashok Nagpure, reviewed the security arrangements and said that all agencies are fully prepared to ensure the smooth conduct of the pilgrimage. Senior officers are supervising operations round-the-clock and continuously reviewing security protocols.

The arrangements are in line with directives issued by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, which has emphasised technology-driven surveillance, proactive threat assessment and close coordination among the Army, CAPFs, Jammu and Kashmir Police and other security agencies.

Anantnag Police have appealed to the public to remain vigilant and immediately report any suspicious activity, object or unattended vehicle to the nearest police station.

Officials said the elaborate security measures are aimed at ensuring a peaceful, secure and hassle-free pilgrimage while maintaining the highest standards of safety along the Pahalgam route to the holy cave shrine.
