Delhi court allows CBI to quiz 3 accused in jail

New Delhi, Jun 15: A Delhi court on Monday allowed a plea by the CBI to question three accused in the NEET-UG paper leak case in jail, saying they were “prime conspirators” requiring further probe.

Duty judge Surender Mohit Singh was hearing the agency’s plea to question three accused in judicial custody – Manisha Sanjay Waghmare, Dhanunjay Nivrutti Lokhande and Shubham Madhukar Khairnar.

“It has been revealed that the (three) accused are the prime conspirators who facilitated the leakage and dissemination of NEET UG 2026 questions in exchange for monetary consideration before the examination held on May 3,” the plea stated.

The plea sought the court’s permission to quiz the accused to get necessary clarifications in connection with the probe.

Lokhande and Khairnar were arrested on May 13, while Waghmare was arrested the next day. Later, they were sent to judicial custody.

Sources said the CBI will interrogate Waghmare on June 17, Lokhande the next day, and Khairnar on June 19.

RTI activism has become new business, says SC; refuses anticipatory bail to activist

New Delhi, Jun 15: The Supreme Court on Monday said that RTI activism has become a new business, while refusing to grant anticipatory bail to an activist and other accused of obstructing a public servant in road construction work.

A bench of Justices Sandeep Mehta and Vijay Bishnoi denied bail to RTI activist Rakesh Kumar Behl and his aide, and questioned their authority to monitor the road construction work.

Justice Mehta observed, “RTI activism has become a new business. The Central government has issued funds, it will take care of the construction of the road. You are nobody. So-called RTI activist! Yellow journalism. Dismissed.”

Concurring with the views of Justice Mehta, Justice Bishnoi said, “Who are you to monitor the construction of all these roads? Are you some superior authority or what?”

Behl has challenged the Punjab and Haryana High Court’s order denying him anticipatory bail.

His counsel contended that they had been falsely implicated in the case as they had highlighted the corruption involved in the road construction work.

According to the FIR, Behl along with another accused Rajiv Kumar alias Mintu allegedly obstructed the ongoing road construction work in Batala of Gurdaspur district of Punjab and also intimated the complainant under whose supervision the work was being executed and the labourers present at the site.

They also used derogatory remarks against the labourer and inflicted injuries on the complainant. An FIR was registered against them under Sections 304(2), 132, 221, 121(1), 351(2), 351(3), of BNS, 2023 (Sections 3(5), 121(2) of the BNS, 2023 and Section 3(1) of the SC/ST Act.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court in its order on May 14 said that the allegations levelled in the FIR disclose specific and direct involvement in obstructing the government work and refused to grant them anticipatory bail.

19 property owners booked for tenant verification lapses in J-K’s Samba

Jammu, Jun 15: Jammu and Kashmir Police on Monday filed 19 FIRs against property owners for not providing details of tenants in Samba district, officials said.

The cases were registered at Samba and Bari Brahmana police stations during a special verification drive launched to enhance security measures and ensure strict adherence to mandatory tenant verification norms, they said.

The verification process was initiated for the outsiders staying as tenants and domestic helpers.

During the drive, 13 cases were registered at Bari Brahmana police station and six cases were registered at Samba police station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), a spokesperson said.

District Magistrate Samba has ordered the mandatory police verification of the tenants. Despite these directives, the concerned house and land owners failed to comply, leading to legal action.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Samba Anuj Kumar has appealed to house and land owners to cooperate with the police and promptly provide complete details of their tenants and domestic helpers at their nearest police station.

He emphasised that timely police verification is essential for maintaining law and order and preventing any misuse of rented accommodations by anti-social or criminal elements.

The drive comes two days after the SSP conducted an extensive review of security arrangements in the Bari Brahmana area to assess the readiness of police for the smooth and secure conduct of the annual Amarnath pilgrimage.

As part of the inspection, the SSP visited various lodgement centres designated for accommodating pilgrims and thoroughly reviewed the security deployment and operational preparedness of the police personnel posted at the locations.

During the review, special emphasis was laid on strengthening security arrangements at all national highway checkpoints falling within the district.
