Hantavirus-stricken cruise ship expected to arrive in Netherlands

Rotterdam, May 18: A cruise ship hit by a deadly hantavirus outbreak is scheduled to arrive in the port city of Rotterdam in the Netherlands on Monday morning.

The MV Hondius has spent the past six days sailing from the Canary Islands, where the remaining passengers were escorted off the vessel by personnel in full-body protective gear and boarded flights to more than 20 countries to enter quarantine.

The outbreak on the ship has reached 11 cases, nine of which have been confirmed, according to the World Health Organisation. Three passengers have died, including a Dutch couple who health officials believe were the first exposed to the virus while visiting South America.

The vessel has made the journey from Tenerife up the coast of Africa and Europe with 25 crew members and two medical personnel. According to the ship operator Oceanwide Expeditions, no one on board is experiencing any symptoms.

Crew members who are unable to return home will be quarantined in the Netherlands, the Dutch health ministry said last week. Some two dozen passengers and crew are already in quarantine in the Netherlands, after arriving in the country on a series of flights over the previous two weeks.

The Public Health Agency of Canada said Sunday that one of the four Canadians in isolation after leaving the ship had tested positive. The case was not yet reflected in the WHO data.

Eighteen Americans are currently under observation at specialised healthcare facilities in the United States designed to treat people with dangerous infectious diseases.

Dr Bonnie Henry, the public health officer for the province of British Columbia, said Saturday the person had received a “presumptive positive” but further testing would be conducted at the National Microbiology Lab in Winnipeg.

After everyone on board has disembarked, the ship will be decontaminated based on Dutch public health guidelines. “Personal protective measures are being taken to ensure that the cleaners do not need to quarantine after the cleaning,” the health ministry said in a letter to the Dutch parliament last week.

Public health officials will inspect the vessel before it is allowed to sail again. The hantavirus outbreak aboard the MV Hondius is the first known case on a cruise ship.

The Dutch company that owns the cruise ship said it doesn’t foresee any changes to its operations. It has an Arctic cruise setting sail from Keflavik, Iceland, on May 29.

France’s Pasteur Institute said on Saturday it has fully sequenced the Andes virus detected in a French passenger from the MV Hondius cruise ship and found that it matched viruses already known in South America, with no evidence so far of new characteristics that would make it more transmissible or more dangerous.

Rupee falls to record low of 96.25 against US dollar

Mumbai, May 18: The rupee opened on a weak note and slumped to an all-time low of 96.25 in early trade on Monday, as elevated crude oil prices, global uncertainty, and a stronger dollar continue to remain key risks for the domestic unit.

Forex traders said higher crude oil prices, a stronger US dollar, and ongoing geopolitical tensions have together created a difficult environment for emerging market currencies, and the rupee is now clearly reflecting that stress.

At the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee opened at 96.19, then fell further to 96.25 against the US dollar, registering a fall of 44 paise from its previous close.

On Friday, the Indian rupee crashed below the 96/USD mark on Friday before closing at an all-time low of 95.81 against the US dollar.

“For now, elevated crude oil prices, global uncertainty, and a stronger dollar continue to remain key risks for the rupee. However, the encouraging sign for markets is that both the government and the RBI have already started taking proactive measures to manage the situation before it becomes more uncomfortable,” CR Forex Advisors MD Amit Pabari said.

Technically, 94.80–95.10 is expected to act as an important support zone for USDINR, while 96.00–96.50 remains a strong resistance area in the near term, Pabari added.

The dollar index, which gauges the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading at 99.32, higher by 0.04 per cent due to simmering Iran tensions.

Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, was trading up 1.83 per cent at USD 111.26 per barrel in futures trade.

“With the rise in oil prices to beyond USD 111.50 per barrel, rupee will be affected the most as rising oil prices increases the outflows of US dollar along with the outflows already happening due to FPIs,” said Anil Kumar Bhansali Head of Treasury and Executive Director Finrex Treasury Advisors LLP.

Meanwhile, within days of levying high customs duties on precious metals, the government on Saturday imposed import curbs on silver by putting the metal under a licensed regime for inbound shipments.

The government, on May 13, hiked import duty on precious metals – gold, and silver – from 6 per cent to 15 per cent. The effective duty (including 3 per cent IGST) is over 18 per cent.

It was hiked to control the outflow of forex by curbing non-essential imports. “Only stoppage of war and reopening of the Strait of Hormuz can bring about a lower demand on the $/rupee pair, else 100 seems to be on the card if RBI does not announce any schemes to increase dollar inflow into the country,” Bhansali added.

On the domestic equity market front, Sensex tanked 833.20 points to 74,404.79 in early trade, while the Nifty was down 234 points to 23,401.70.

Foreign Institutional Investors remained net buyers for the second straight session, purchasing equities worth Rs 1,329.17 crore on Friday, according to exchange data.

Meanwhile, India’s forex reserves jumped by USD 6.295 billion to USD 696.988 billion during the week ended May 8, the Reserve Bank said on Friday. The overall reserves had dropped by USD 7.794 billion to USD 690.693 billion in the previous reporting week.

India on drone strike near UAE’s Barakah nuclear plant

New Delhi, May 18: India on Monday voiced deep concern over a drone attack targeting the Barakah nuclear facility in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as it marked a dangerous escalation in the West Asia conflict.

New Delhi’s reaction came a day after a drone struck a generator near the Gulf nation’s sole nuclear power plant, sparking a fire on the complex’s perimeter.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack. The UAE’s Ministry of Defence said it is working to determine the source of the drone strike.

The incident triggered fears of a sharp escalation in tensions across West Asia.

“India is deeply concerned at the attack targeting the Barakah nuclear facility in the UAE,” the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said.

“Such actions are unacceptable and represent a dangerous escalation. We urgently call for restraint and a return to dialogue and diplomacy,” it said.

Traditional ‘tongas’ gather popularity in Jammu border belt amid PM’s appeal to save fuel

Traditional ‘tongas’ gather popularity in Jammu border belt amid PM’s appeal to save fuel

R S Pura, May 18: Traditional horse-driven tongas, once a common mode of transport in the border areas of Jammu, are seeing an increase in the number of takers in the R S Pura sector following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal for fuel conservation.

The tongas, which historically ferried passengers between Jammu and Sialkot before Independence, have continued to survive in parts of R S Pura for more than seven decades. Locals and tourists alike have been opting for the eco-friendly transport for entertainment as part of border tourism and for short-distance travel in villages near the International Border.

“We have been running tongas here for decades. Before 1947, people used to travel from Sialkot to Jammu in tongas. Over the years, this tradition went out of fashion, but now, after the Prime Minister’s appeal, locals are once again using tongas for short-distance movement in villages,” said Teja Singh, a traditional tanga operator.

He said tonga operators continue to assemble in the area every Saturday and Sunday to keep the tradition alive.

Another operator, Rattan Singh, said people have started preferring tongas again as fuel-saving measures gain momentum across the country.

“From Zero Line to R S Pura, people use tongas for commuting. Earlier, people depended more on fuel-powered vehicles, but now, with the emphasis on saving fuel, tongas have started running again. Horse-driven tongas do not require fuel. So, people are considering them a better option,” he said.

The renewed interest comes amid wider efforts to conserve fuel, including reduced vehicle movement and awareness campaigns encouraging alternatives to petrol and diesel-run transport.

Many tourists who visited the border belt welcomed the revival of the traditional mode of transport.

A group of tourists — Davain, Dharmi, Lacha Patel, Rahi and Pavitra — said tonga rides not only help save fuel but also offer a glimpse into the region’s heritage and rural lifestyle.

“Such traditional modes of transport help in conserving fuel. Arrangements like tongas are not only better for the environment but also keep our traditions alive. Such rides should be promoted in tourism and border areas,” said Rahi.

The visitors said riding a tonga reconnects people with their cultural roots and reflects the bond between humans and animals while remaining environmentally friendly.

“A tonga ride is not just a means of travel, but also a part of our old cultural identity. Modern technology has its own place, but it is equally important to preserve our culture and traditions,” they said.

Amit Shah inaugurates Tech Park, GREMI campus in Ahmedabad

Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the newly built Million Minds Tech Park and GREMI City Campus in Ahmedabad, saying the projects would strengthen Gujarat’s position in emerging technologies and high-skill industries. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and several other dignitaries were present at the event.

Addressing the gathering, Amit Shah said the projects reflected Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of making Gujarat a major hub for technology, innovation, entrepreneurship and advanced industries. He said Gujarat, which has played a leading role in India’s industrial development, would also emerge as a frontrunner in sectors such as artificial intelligence, deep technology, robotics, quantum computing and semiconductors.

The Home Minister said the Million Minds Tech Park, spread over 13.5 lakh square feet and built at a cost of around Rs 1,100 crore, would provide workspace for nearly 9,000 skilled professionals in its first phase. He added that the project, planned across seven phases with an estimated investment of Rs 15,000 crore, is expected to generate more than 63,000 jobs over the next five years.

Amit Shah said the integrated 65-acre tech park would include commercial spaces, residential facilities, hotels and malls, helping position Ahmedabad alongside major technology hubs such as Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune and Gurugram.

He also inaugurated the Ganesh Real Estate Management Institute (GREMI) Campus, describing it as a major initiative for professionalising India’s real estate and urban planning sectors. The institute’s first campus, spread across 30,000 square feet, will initially accommodate 300 students, while a larger 100-acre campus near Thol Lake is planned at a cost of Rs 500 crore.

Shah said India’s future economy would be driven by AI and deep technology, adding that the Modi government is focused on creating the right ecosystem for youth working in advanced sectors including cybersecurity, automation, defence and space technology.

Trump warns Iran ‘Time Is Running Out” as Tehran says US offers no concessions

Trump warns Iran ‘Time Is Running Out” as Tehran says US offers no concessions

New Delhi, May 18: US President Donald Trump has warned Iran that “the clock is ticking” as negotiations aimed at ending the ongoing conflict appeared to have hit a deadlock, according to a report by the BBC.

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said Iran must act quickly to avoid further devastation. “They better get moving, FAST, or there won’t be anything left of them. TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE!” Trump wrote ahead of his scheduled talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The warning came amid growing uncertainty over the future of the ceasefire and diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran.

Iranian media reports claimed that the United States had failed to offer any meaningful concessions in response to Tehran’s latest proposals aimed at ending the war. Iran’s semi-official Mehr news agency said the lack of compromise from Washington could lead to an “impasse in the negotiations”.

Trump’s latest remarks resounded his earlier warning that a “whole civilisation” could perish unless Iran agreed to a deal to end hostilities. He had also said earlier this week that the ceasefire was on “massive life support” after rejecting Tehran’s demands, describing them as “totally unacceptable”.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei defended Tehran’s proposals, calling them “responsible” and “generous”.

According to Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency, Tehran’s conditions included an immediate halt to the war across all fronts, including Israeli military operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon, an end to the US naval blockade of Iranian ports, and guarantees against future attacks on Iran. The proposals also sought compensation for war damages and reaffirmation of Iran’s sovereignty over the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.

Meanwhile, Iran’s semi-official Fars news agency reported that Washington had responded with five conditions, including a demand that Iran retain only one operational nuclear facility and transfer its stockpile of highly enriched uranium to the United States.

In a possible shift in Washington’s stance, Trump indicated on Friday that he could accept a 20-year suspension of Iran’s nuclear programme instead of insisting on its complete dismantling, long considered a key sticking point in negotiations. The tensions have triggered a sharp rise in global oil prices, while the United States has continued enforcing a blockade on Iranian ports to pressure Tehran into accepting its terms.
