What SBI, PNB, other bank customers should expect

New Delhi, Jan 26: Banking operations at public sector banks across the country are likely to be disrupted on Tuesday as the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) goes ahead with its nationwide strike demanding a five-day work week.

The decision to strike was taken after a conciliation meeting with the Chief Labour Commissioner on January 23 failed to resolve the issue.

The UFBU is a joint platform of nine unions representing officers and employees of public sector banks.

The timing of the strike could cause inconvenience to customers, as banks are already closed on Sunday (January 25) and Monday (January 26), due to Republic Day.

This means many branch-level services may remain unavailable for three consecutive days.

Services such as cash deposits and withdrawals, cheque clearances and other routine administrative work are likely to be affected at public sector banks, including the State Bank of India (SBI), the Punjab National Bank (PNB), and the Bank of Baroda.

However, private sector banks such as the HDFC Bank, the ICICI Bank, and the Axis Bank are expected to function normally, since their employees are not part of the unions participating in the strike. Digital banking services like UPI payments and internet banking are expected to continue without major issues.

Still, there could be some local disruptions in ATM cash availability due to operational challenges.

Several public sector banks have already informed stock exchanges about the possible impact of the strike.

Kashmir braces for more rain, snow

Kashmir braces for more rain, snow

Srinagar/ Ramban, Jan 26: Kashmir remained under heavy cloud cover on Monday, even as another wet spell was forecast from the evening.

Residents across several parts of Kashmir reported biting cold winds, adding to the winter woes.

Officials at the Meteorological Department (MeT) said an approaching Western Disturbance was likely to bring rain and snowfall, accompanied by thunder and gusty winds in a few areas from Monday evening.

However, they said wind speeds would remain lower than those recorded last week.

Moderate to heavy snowfall is expected in high-altitude areas, while the plains may witness intermittent rain or snow.

The south Kashmir districts of Shopian and Kulgam are likely to receive a fresh spell of snowfall, with officials saying there are fair chances of moderate snow accumulation in several parts of these districts.

Snowfall in north and central Kashmir is expected to remain scant, though the Chenab Valley and the Qazigund-Banihal stretch may also receive snow.

According to MeT, light rain or snowfall is expected at a few places on Tuesday, while the weather is likely to remain dry but cloudy over the subsequent two days.

Authorities have advised travellers and transporters to ascertain the status of highways and roads from the concerned traffic units prior to undertaking any journey.

Meanwhile, night temperatures across Kashmir improved slightly on Monday due to overcast conditions.

Srinagar recorded a minimum of minus 0.1 degrees Celsius, while Gulmarg, the skiing resort in north Kashmir, remained the coldest place at minus 9 degrees Celsius.

Pahalgam in south Kashmir registered a low of minus 4.6 degrees Celsius, and other weather stations across the Valley hovered around minus 1 degree Celsius.

Residents said the persistent cold winds on Monday had intensified the chill.

ìThe cold winds are unbearable, especially in the mornings and evenings,î said Rafiq Ahmad, a resident of Srinagarís Jawahar Nagar area. ìIt feels like the chill is getting stronger every day, and going outside has become really difficult.î

Meanwhile, the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway remained partially open on Monday, allowing two-way movement of Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs).

However, traffic flow was repeatedly disrupted due to vehicle breakdowns, frost formation, and slippery road conditions, particularly in the Ramsu-Banihal sector.

Officials said vehicular movement had to be temporarily suspended at several locations after vehicles began skidding on icy stretches, especially along the Kharpura to Railway Bypass stretch near Banihal, posing serious safety risks on Monday morning.

As a precautionary measure, traffic was halted at safer points, including Jakhiani, Chanderkote, Marog, and other designated locations on Monday morning for some time.

Road maintenance agencies were later directed to sprinkle salt and urea on affected stretches to improve the road and restore safe movement between Magarkote and the Banihal-Qazigund tunnel.

Traffic authorities later allowed movement of vehicles between Nashri and Banihal, though traffic remained slow due to persistent slippery conditions and multiple vehicle breakdowns between Ramban and Banihal.

Authorities reiterated their earlier advisory, urging commuters and light vehicle operators to prefer daytime travel on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway.

Night travel has been strongly discouraged due to the risk of shooting stones, landslides, and ongoing construction work between Ramban and Banihal.

Officials also warned that frost formation caused by recent snowfall along the Nachlana-Ramban stretch and near the Navyug Tunnel could further worsen road conditions and inconvenience commuters.

Motorists were advised to strictly follow lane discipline, avoid overtaking, and refrain from wrong-lane driving to prevent congestion.

Commuters and vehicle operators have been urged not to travel on the highway without confirming the latest road status from Traffic Control Units in Jammu, Srinagar, Udhampur, and Ramban.

Meanwhile, dark clouds were observed hovering across the Banihal-Udhampur region, raising concerns over further weather-related disruptions.

In an advisory issued for Tuesday, the J&K Traffic Department advised commuters to avoid travel on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway on Tuesday night, as the MeT had forecast snowfall and rainfall over the next few days.

Authorities warned of a heightened risk of shooting stones and landslides along vulnerable stretches of the highway.

‘Operation Sindoor’, EU leaders take centre stage on 77th Republic Day

New Delhi, Jan 26: India ushered in its 77th Republic Day on Monday with a grand display of its cultural diversity, economic growth, and military prowess that included missiles, warplanes, newly-raised units, and lethal weapon systems used during ëOperation Sindoorí.

President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, and President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, graced the celebrations as chief guests, marking a significant diplomatic moment alongside the military display.

Although the overarching theme of the event was 150 years of ëVande Mataramí, the Indian militaryís ëOperation Sindoorí also found prominence at the parade on the Kartavya Path, the centrepiece boulevard of the national capital.

The parade commenced with the President Droupadi Murmu taking the salute shortly after she, Costa, and von der Leyen, flanked by the Indian Presidentís bodyguards, arrived at the Kartavya Path in a traditional buggy.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, several other union ministers, the countryís top military brass, foreign diplomats, and senior officials were among the spectators.

The major weapon systems displayed included BrahMos and Akash weapon systems, rocket launcher ëSuryastraí, Main Battle Tank Arjun, and an array of indigenously-built military platforms and hardware.

Around 100 artistes heralded the parade, on the theme ëVividata Mein Ektaí (Unity in Diversity) that featured a grand presentation of musical instruments, demonstrating the nationís unity and rich cultural diversity.

The parade then began with President Murmu taking the salute.

The parade was led by Parade Commander Lt General Bhavnish Kumar, General Officer Commanding, Delhi Area, a second-generation officer.

A tri-services tableau showcasing replicas of major weapon systems deployed by the Indian military during ëOperation Sindoorí in early May was a major attraction.

A glass-cased integrated operational centre, depicting the conduct of ëOperation Sindoorí with the use of weapons systems such as BrahMos and S-400 missiles rolled down Kartavya Path.

For the first time, the parade showcased a phased ëBattle Array Formatí of the Indian Army, including its aerial component.

The reconnaissance element consisted of the 61 Cavalry in active combat uniform.

It was followed by a high mobility reconnaissance vehicle.

Providing aerial support was the indigenous Dhruv Advanced Light Helicopter and its armed version, Rudra, in Prahar formation, demonstrating battlefield shaping.

The combat elements then followed with T-90 Bhisma and Main Battle Tank Arjun rolling past the saluting dais with aerial support from Apache AH-64E and Prachand light combat helicopters.

Other mechanised columns included BMP-II Infantry Combat Vehicle, along with Nag missile system (Tracked) Mk-2.

A military contingent from the EU, carrying the military staff flag and flags of Operations Atalanta and Aspides, the naval operations of the grouping, also featured at the parade.

It was the EUís first participation in such an event outside of Europe.

Among the major weapon systems showcased at the parade were Suryastra Universal Rocket Launcher System (URLS), Brahmos Supersonic cruise missiles, and Akash missile systems.

The Indian Navy contingent comprised 144 young personnel, led by Lt Karan Nagyal as contingent commander, and Lt Pawan Kumar Gandi, Lt Priti Kumari, and Lt Varun Dreveriya as platoon commanders.

It was followed by the Naval tableau that presented a vivid depiction of the theme ëStrong Navy for a Strong Nationí.

It depicted a stitched ship from the fifth century CE, now christened INSV Kaundinya, Gurab-class ships of the Maratha Navy, and frontline indigenous platforms, including the aircraft carrier INS Vikrant and INS Udayagiri.

The tableau featured a depiction of the circumnavigation route followed by INSV Tarini as part of the Navika Sagar Parikrama-II expedition.

In addition to naval personnel, young cadets from the Sea Cadets Corps, a non-governmental organisation that imparts basic nautical skills to youth in Mumbai, marched alongside the tableau.

The Indian Air Force contingent comprised four officers and 144 airmen.

The contingent commander was Squadron Leader Jagdesh Kumar with Squadron Leader Nikita Choudhery, Flt Lt Prakhar Chandrakar, and Flt Lt Dinesh as supernumerary officers.

Syncing with the marching contingent was a thrilling fly-past by two Rafale jets, two MiG-29s, two Su-30s, and one Jaguar aircraft in ëSpearheadí formation, symbolising the ëSindoor Formationí.

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) showcased its hypersonic glide missile LR-AShM.

It is capable of engaging static and moving targets and is designed to carry various payloads.

The missile has a first-of-its-kind indigenous avionics system and high-accuracy sensor packages.

A total of 30 tableaux ñ 17 of states and Union Territories and 13 of various ministries and departments rolled down the Kartavya Path.

The tableaux showcased a unique mix of 150 years of the national song ëVande Mataramí and the nationís rapid progress.

A joint ëDareDevilsí team of motorcycle riders drawn from the Central Reserve Police Force and the Sashastra Seema Bal enthralled the audience with their manoeuvres.

The aerial fly-past, one of the most eagerly-awaited events of the parade, witnessed the participation of a total of 29 aircraft, including 16 fighter jets, four transport aircraft and nine helicopters.

These include Rafale, Su-30 MKI, MiG-29 and Jaguar aircraft, complemented by strategic assets ñ C-130 and C-295, as well as the Indian Navyís P-8i aircraft.

The formations include Arjan, Vajraang, Varuna, and Vijay.
