AIIMS Delhi doctors remove 19.9 kg tumour from 42-year-old colon cancer patient

New Delhi, Jan 23: Doctors at the All India Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Delhi on Friday announced a successful surgery where they removed a whopping 19.9 kg tumour from a 43-year-old colon cancer patient, giving her a new lease of life.

Munmun, hailing from Durgapur, West Bengal, was presented to the hospital in July 2024 with abdominal distension (a larger-than-normal belly). She had a history of unilateral salpingo-oophorectomy — the surgical removal of one ovary and one fallopian tube on one side of the body — 25 years ago.

Munmun was diagnosed with Stage-4 colon cancer, featuring pelvic predominance.

She had visited multiple hospitals and undergone several cycles of chemotherapy. Despite that, there was no improvement, and the disease kept progressing. With the tumour spreading to multiple abdominal organs, she was given only 3-4 months to survive.

“A team of doctors, led by Prof. M.D. Ray, a surgical oncologist at AIIMS Delhi, performed successful cytoreductive surgery on January 12, achieving complete resection and removing 19.9 kg of tumour burden with multi-organ resections, completing surgery plus HIPEC on January 15, to complete the oncosurgical management. The patient was shifted from the ICU to the ward and later discharged. She is doing fine, expectedly,” the apex institute said in a statement.

Speaking to reporters, Ray noted the disease was considered inoperable based on CT and PET-CT scans.

The scans showed a massive abdominal tumor with no separately identifiable organs. The entire abdomen was occupied by a tumour mass.

As the patient was unlikely to tolerate the massive procedure in a single surgery, he decided to do the surgery in two stages.

“In the first stage, I removed the bulk of the tumour. We performed extensive resection, removing ascending colon, part of ileum, two-thirds of transverse colon, sigmoid colon, omentum, uterus, and bilateral fallopian tubes, parts of liver and liver capsule, and peritoneum,” the doctor said.

“Major vessels such as the IVC were at risk due to inflammation and infiltration, making surgery extremely challenging,” he said, adding that during this stage, the patient became hemodynamically unstable due to blood loss and other complications.

After a gap of two days, the second stage of the surgery was performed, where HIPEC was administered to the patient.

Trump downplaying NATO’s Afghanistan involvement causes distress in UK

Trump downplaying NATO’s Afghanistan involvement causes distress in UK

London, Jan 23: US President Donald Trump provoked outrage and distress among many in the United Kingdom on Friday with his suggestion that troops from NATO countries — other than Americans — stayed away from the front line during the war in Afghanistan.

In an interview with Fox News in Davos, Switzerland, on Thursday, Trump said he was not sure NATO would be there to support the United States if and when requested.

“I’ve always said, will they be there if we ever needed them, and that’s really the ultimate test, and I’m not sure of that,” Trump said. “We’ve never needed them; we have never really asked anything of them. You know, they’ll say they sent some troops to Afghanistan, or this or that, and they did, they stayed a little back, a little off the front lines.”

In October 2001, nearly a month after the Sept. 11 attacks, a US-led coalition launched an invasion of Afghanistan to destroy al-Qaida, which had used the country as its base, and the group’s Taliban hosts. Alongside the US were troops from dozens of countries, including from NATO, whose mutual-defence mandate had been triggered for the first time after the attacks on New York and Washington.

In Britain, the reaction to Trump’s comments was raw, and Prime Minister Keir Starmer was being urged to request an apology from the US president.

After 9/11, then-Prime Minister Tony Blair said the UK would “stand shoulder to shoulder” with the US in response to the al-Qaida attacks. Troops from the UK took a key role in many operations during the Afghan war until their withdrawal in 2014, particularly in Helmand Province in the south of the country. American troops remained in Afghanistan until their chaotic withdrawal in 2021, when the Taliban returned to power.

More than 150,000 British troops served in Afghanistan in the years after the US-led 2001 invasion, the largest contingent after the American one.

British Defence Secretary John Healey said the UK and NATO allies “answered the US call” then, and that more than 450 British personnel lost their lives in Afghanistan.

“Those British troops should be remembered for who they were: heroes who gave their lives in the service of our nation,” he said.

Season’s first snowfall brightens Jammu hill resorts

Ramban Jan 23: The famous hill resorts of Jammu province, including Patnitop, Nathatop, Sanasar, and Batote, along with towns like Gool, Banihal, and Ramsu, witnessed the season’s first snowfall on Friday, bringing cheer to the tourism sector even as power, water and road disruptions affected daily life.

The fresh snowfall and accompanying rainfall were welcomed by hoteliers, taxi operators, mule and horse owners, photographers, shopkeepers, and vendors operating near these tourist destinations, as they are expected to give a much-needed boost to tourism activities in the region.

Experts believe that the precipitation will also have long-term benefits. The rainfall is expected to recharge hydel project reservoirs, thereby improving power generation, which had declined drastically due to the extended dry season. Additionally, it is likely to replenish groundwater levels, revive natural springs, wells and traditional baulies, and prove beneficial for fruit and vegetable cultivation across the region. Health experts said the rainfall would help settle atmospheric dust and pollution, leading to improved air quality and better public health conditions.

However, the snowfall also disrupted normal life in several areas. Since early morning, power supply, water supply and telecommunication services were affected at many places. Batote town, in particular, witnessed a complete standstill, wearing a deserted look as residents stayed indoors due to harsh weather conditions.

Meanwhile, officials said that as a precautionary measure, vehicular traffic on the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) was halted at safer locations due to slippery road conditions caused by rain and snow. Traffic on several link roads across the affected areas was also snapped.

The administration has advised commuters to avoid unnecessary travel and follow official advisories until weather conditions improve and road connectivity is restored.

891 MW power supply restored instantly after disruption: JPDCL

Jammu, Jan 23: In view of incessant rainfall and heavy snowfall across various parts of the Jammu Division, the power demand of Jammu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (JPDCL) witnessed an unprecedented decline, dropping to 140 MW at around 04:00 am. Consequent upon sustained restoration efforts undertaken by JPDCL, the running load has since been progressively enhanced to 891 MW, as against the normal average running load of approximately 1150 MW.

At the Sub-Transmission level, 161 out of 181 numbers of 66/33 kV lines have been restored. At the Distribution level, 740 out of 1373 numbers of 11 kV feeders have been restored and restoration of remaining accessible feeders is being undertaken on priority.

The pace of restoration in certain areas remains constrained due to inaccessibility of snow-bound and rain-affected locations, particularly in hilly and remote regions. The major affected areas include parts of Poonch, Rajouri, Kathua, Doda, Udhampur, Reasi, Ramban, Kishtwar and Samba districts, especially the higher reaches and interior areas. In District Jammu, power infrastructure has been affected mainly due to heavy rainfall, strong winds and uprooting of trees leading to damage of HT and LT lines.

Adequate manpower, machinery and material have been mobilized to assess damages and ensure early restoration of power supply across all affected areas. JPDCL is maintaining close coordination with district administrations and other concerned agencies to expedite restoration works, particularly in vulnerable and remote regions.

Heavy snowfall, gusty winds disrupt power supply across Kashmir; KPDCL restores 80% connectivity

Srinagar, Jan 23: In anticipation to snowfall prediction, KPDCL had geared up the preparedness to tackle the snow fall aftermath on the electric infrastructure especially in hilly terrains and rural areas.

According to the official statement by KPDCL, severe gusty wind, incessant rainfall and heavy snowfall across various parts of the Kashmir  Division, the power demand/load of Kashmir  Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL) witnessed an unprecedented decline  and it dropped to the lowest level of 93 MW at around 10:00 PM, as against the normal average running load of approximately 1650 MW. The network was live until  10:00 PM of intervening night of   22th and 23th of January-2026 when the load abruptly crashed due to faults/ damage of various 33kV / 11kV feeders owing to high speed gusty winds. The roof tops of houses were blown off and smashed on to  33kV/11KV line  causing damage to electrical line and adding  extra difficulty in clearing the smashed roof structures hanging on lines.

At the sub-transmission level, 103 out of 135 numbers of 33 kV lines were down/under fault, reflecting nearly 24% active network at this level. Similarly, at the distribution level, 1275 out of 1302 numbers of 11 kV feeders were down/under fault  till morning.

Following established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), wee morning restoration had already started and is being  monitored at all levels led by Managing Director/Chief Engineer and pursued by Superintending Engineers/Executive Engineers. The restoration picked up pace and by 6.00 PM, almost 80% network was charged back and load of 1050 MW was recorded by SLDC with prioritizing of essential and vital installations.

The heavy snowfall and high-speed winds have badly affected the electrical infrastructure particularly in Shopian, Kulgam, Baramulla and Budgam. Around 4.5Ft snow in high terrains of these areas   is affecting the restoration work also as vehicular movement  is severely impaired. The major affected areas include

DH pora , Kund , Malwan and branel-Lammar of Kulgam district; Sedow , Reshnagri, Herpora ,Kaprain and Kuch dora of Shopian district;   Khanshab, Beerwa, Doodhpathri and Yousmarg of Budgam district.

The official statement further said that the damage of Transmission tower at Sheeri  in Delina-LJHP 132 kV Transmission line  has also put hindrance in restoration of power supply , JKPTCL (Kashmir) is on job of restoring the network by erecting  ERS ( Emergency Restoration System).

KPDCL is committed to restore the Power supply to all areas by the dusk of day and men and machinery has already been mobilized to the effected areas who are working on War footing basis  for  earliest restoration  of  power supply services to valley.

Bail should not be linked to monetary deposits, undertakings: Supreme Court

Bail should not be linked to monetary deposits, undertakings: Supreme Court

New Delhi, Jan 23: In a significant ruling on bail jurisprudence, the Supreme Court has observed that courts should not insist on upfront monetary deposits or undertakings as a precondition for the grant or consideration of bail, as such a practice has the potential to derail the criminal justice system and be misused to coerce settlements.

A bench of Justices Manoj Misra and Manmohan made the observations while hearing a special leave petition (SLP) challenging a Delhi High Court order that declined to extend the interim bail of an accused in a case involving the alleged diversion of government subsidy funds.

Relying on its recent ruling in Gajanan Dattatray Gore vs. State of Maharashtra, the apex court reiterated that courts must not link bail relief to financial conditions.

“The decision in Gajanan Dattatray Gore deprecates the practice of the courts in insisting on upfront deposits, or undertaking for such deposits, or compliance(s) of certain obligations, from bail/stay applicants for consideration of their prayer on merits,” the Justice Misra-led Bench said.

Such a practice “encourages implication with an oblique purpose and has the potential to derail the criminal justice delivery system by making it a tool in the hands of unscrupulous complainant(s) to extort a settlement and force the other side to give up its right of defence”, it added.

The SLP arose from a July 21, 2025, order of the Delhi High Court, which refused to extend the accused’s interim bail in connection with an FIR registered by the Economic Offences Wing after his failure to comply with an undertaking to deposit the remaining allegedly diverted amount.

In its order, the Supreme Court observed that instead of repeatedly extending interim bail while insisting on further deposits, the appropriate course was to decide the regular bail application on its own merits.

“If a person is unable to comply with the undertaking, that is not a ground to defer consideration of bail prayer on merits,” the bench observed.

It further noted that in offences under Section 409 of the IPC, there is no presumption of culpability of a company director, and such liability has to be established during trial.

Disposing of the SLP, the apex court directed the Delhi High Court to decide the accused’s regular bail application expeditiously, preferably within three weeks, while allowing the interim protection to continue in the meantime.

“In the interregnum, the interim order that was passed on 21.07.2025 shall remain operative,” it ordered.

Rupee hits all-time low of 92/USD, recovers marginally to settle at 91.88 against US dollar

Mumbai, Jan 23: The rupee hit an all-time low of 92 on Friday and recovered marginally to settle at 91.88 (provisional) against the American currency, amid selling pressure from foreign funds and risk-off sentiment in global markets.

Forex traders said the Indian rupee gave up early gains and hit a record low of 91.99 per US dollar in intraday trade due to weak domestic markets and persistent foreign fund outflows. Moreover, gains in crude oil prices and a surge in US treasury yields weighed on the rupee.

At the interbank foreign exchange, the rupee opened at 91.45 and then gained ground to touch an intraday high of 91.41 against the greenback. It touched an all-time intraday low of 92.00 before settling for the day at a record closing low of 91.88 (provisional), down 30 paise from its previous closing level.

On Thursday, the rupee rebounded from its all-time low levels and ended with a gain of 7 paise at 91.58 against the US dollar.

The previous all-time low was recorded on January 21, when the rupee plunged 68 paise to close at 91.65 against the American currency.

The rupee has slumped by 200 paise, or over 2 per cent, so far this month. In 2025, the domestic unit had plunged 5 per cent on unabated foreign fund outflows and dollar strength.

“We expect the rupee to trade with a negative bias due to selling pressure from FIIs and risk-off sentiments in the global markets. Dollar demand from hedgers and imports may further pressurise the rupee,” said Anuj Choudhary, Research Analyst, Mirae Asset ShareKhan.

However, a weak dollar and any intervention by the RBI may support the rupee at lower levels. USD-INR spot price is expected to trade in a range of 91.60 to 92.30, Choudhary added.

Meanwhile, the dollar index, which measures the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading 0.01 per cent higher at 98.36.

Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, was trading 1.03 per cent higher at USD 64.72 per barrel in futures trade.

On the domestic equity market front, Sensex tanked 769.67 points to settle at 81,537.70, while the Nifty dived 241.25 points to 25,048.65.

Foreign institutional investors offloaded equities worth Rs 2,549.80 crore on Thursday, according to exchange data.
