Qayoom Wani urges authorities to develop Drung, other Tangmarg areas as tourist destinations

Srinagar, June 15: Chairman of the Jammu and Kashmir Civil Society Forum (JKCSF), Qayoom Wani, on Monday urged the Jammu and Kashmir Government to develop Drung and other areas of Tangmarg, including Gogaldara, Ringawali, Baderkot, Checki Fresti Reshi, and the “picturesque” areas around Qazipora, as tourist destinations.

“Tourism is not merely a source of recreation; it is the backbone of livelihood for thousands of families in the Tangmarg area. The authorities concerned must wake up to the ground realities and immediately upgrade the road infrastructure and other basic facilities at Drung to match its tourism potential,” Wani said.

He said that Drung, one of Kashmir’s most breathtaking and rapidly emerging tourist destinations, attracts thousands of visitors every day. Despite its growing popularity and immense contribution to the local economy, the road leading to the destination remains in a deplorable condition, causing inconvenience to tourists and hardship to local residents whose livelihoods depend on tourism.

Wani further said that the government must look beyond Gulmarg alone. While Gulmarg has already earned international recognition, several scenic and unexplored destinations in the Tangmarg region—such as Gogaldara, Ringawali, Baderkot, Checki Fresti Reshi, and the picturesque areas around Qazipora—remain neglected despite their immense tourism potential.

“A balanced and visionary tourism policy is the need of the hour. Developing these destinations will not only reduce excessive pressure on Gulmarg but will also create new opportunities for employment, entrepreneurship, and economic growth for the people of Tangmarg, Kunzer, and adjoining areas,” he said.

“The benefits of tourism should reach every corner of the region. It is time to invest in and promote the hidden treasures of Tangmarg so that local communities can equally share in the prosperity that tourism brings,” Wani added.

Prime Minister holds official talks with President of France

New Delhi, June 15: Prime Minister Narendra Modi held bilateral talks with the President of France, H.E. Mr. Emmanuel Macron, at Villa Kerylos in Nice on Sunday. This was the first meeting of the two leaders since the elevation of India-France ties to the level of ‘Special Global Strategic Partnership’ earlier this year.

The two leaders held extensive discussions covering diverse aspects of bilateral relations. They expressed satisfaction at the excellent growth and depth of bilateral defence collaboration across all domains and agreed to further intensify it with focus on co-design, co-development and co-production of defence platforms and advanced technologies.

Both leaders noted the rich legacy of cooperation in the space sector and discussed furthering collaboration in human spaceflight and space situational awareness. They also discussed ways to expand private sector collaboration in space. In civil nuclear energy, they noted that India’s SHANTI Act creates new opportunities for collaboration, including on small and advanced modular reactors.

Reviewing the progress under the Horizon 2047 Roadmap, both leaders also shared concrete ideas to strengthen and diversify bilateral ties in the fields of economic growth, technology and innovation, talent mobility and people-to-people and cultural exchanges. In this context, they noted the steady growth in bilateral trade and agreed to set up a High-level Mechanism to double it within five years. They called for early implementation of the India-EU Free Trade Agreement, which offers a unique opportunity to expand bilateral trade and investment.

The leaders also discussed ways to enhance cooperation in the SME, aviation and railway sectors. They welcomed the agreement to establish a Centre of Excellence for Skilling in Aeronautics in Kanpur. Welcoming the establishment of a Dialogue on Economic Security, both leaders agreed to strengthen supply chain resilience, especially in critical minerals.

Recognizing the key role of innovation and technology in the bilateral relationship, both sides adopted an “Innovation Roadmap 2030” to give the partnership a long-term direction. Both leaders discussed expanding cooperation on Artificial Intelligence and agreed to create a Joint India-France AI Working Group for the purpose.

The joint inauguration of Bharat Innovates at Nice by the leaders, and Prime Minister’s upcoming participation at Vivatech in Paris have further strengthened the partnership between the two countries in sectors such as deep-tech, semiconductors, agri-tech, med-tech, renewable energy, defence and space. Both leaders appreciated the continued expansion of UPI in France, as well as the signing of 19 agreements among institutions in the innovation ecosystems of both countries.

The two leaders emphasized the importance of enhancing people-to-people ties. In this context, Prime Minister thanked President Macron for the swift operationalisation of visa-free transit for Indian nationals at French airports. They further discussed ways to enhance the mobility of talent and students between the two countries and expanding mutual recognition of educational qualifications.

Both leaders reiterated the importance of the India-France Special Global Strategic Partnership in creating further opportunities for the peoples of the two countries and advancing international peace, stability and prosperity.

Prime Minister and President Macron also viewed the works of French artists Mr. Thibault De La Lance and Mr. Théophile de Bascher created during their 10-day art residency in Jaipur, India. The artists drew inspiration from Indian heritage and aesthetics resulting in works reflecting the cultural confluence of India and France.

Following the talks, President Macron hosted a lunch in honour of Prime Minister Modi

Deal on ending the Iran war sends stocks soaring while oil prices fall

Deal on ending the Iran war sends stocks soaring while oil prices fall

Bangkok, June 15: Share prices soared Monday in Asia after a deal was announced on ending the Iran war and reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

Benchmarks in Tokyo and Seoul gained more than 5% early Monday. Oil prices fell more than $3 a barrel.

The future for the S&P 500 was up 1% and that for the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.8%, auguring early gains for Wall Street.

U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed the initial agreement and authorized an end to the U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ports.

Iran confirmed the agreement but signaled that implementation would not start until a signing that Pakistan said would be held Friday in Switzerland. Broader negotiations on issues like Iran’s nuclear program are expected to continue over the next 60 days.

In early trading Monday, the price of Brent crude oil, the international standard, fell $3.45 to $83.88 per barrel. U.S. benchmark crude lost $3.95 to $80.93 per barrel.

But it may take months for oil prices to stabilize after the disruptions from the war caused them to surge, pushing costs up gasoline and many other products. Energy experts said shipping and insurance companies will want to be confident the pact will hold, ensuring that oil and gas supplies will flow freely enough for the world’s needs to be met.

“Markets are likely to be cautious in not over-extending optimism as they watch for an actual resumption of traffic across Hormuz,” Mizuho Bank analysts said in a commentary.

Still, the news was a huge relief for markets that have been roiled since the conflict began in late February.

The deal on ending the war offers relief to the global economy more than three months since fighting began.

Stocks rallied in Asia, where Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 gained 5.1% to 69,367.06 as the benchmark logged another record high.

Buying was heaviest for technology shares, especially those related to artificial intelligence. The boom in AI has been driving gains in Japan, where the benchmark has gained more than 80% in the last year.

“This is great news,” said Takashi Hiroki, chief strategist at Monex. “Buying by foreign investors is leading the market with expectations of easing tensions around the situation in the Middle East. Then the decline in New York crude oil futures is supporting this positive market.”

The Kospi in Seoul led regional gains, surging 5.6% to 8,577.62.

In Australia, the S&P/ASX 200 advanced 1.4% to 8,930.50. Taiwan’s Taiex was up 2.6%.

U.S. stocks rose Friday after oil prices fell, and Elon Musk’s SpaceX soared in its highly anticipated debut on Wall Street.

On Friday, the S&P 500 added 0.5% to close out its 10th winning week in the last 11. The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 353 points, or 0.7%, and the Nasdaq composite gained 0.3%.

In other dealings early Monday, the dollar rose to 160.15 Japanese yen from 160.12 yen late Friday. The euro climbed to $1.1596 from $1.1578.

“I would also especially thank the visionary leadership of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Republic of Turkiye for their immense contributions in this regard,” he added.

“With the agreement now in place, mediators will facilitate a series of meetings this week. These pre-implementation discussions will lay the foundation for the technical talks and the official signing ceremony, he concluded.

He tagged US President Donald Trump, Vice President J D Vance, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi in his post.

US President Trump made the announcement on Truth Social on Sunday evening, easing pressure on the global energy markets, as officials said the peace agreement would be signed on June 19 in Switzerland.

However, Details of the deal were not immediately available.

Meanwhile, Iran’s deputy foreign minister, Kazem Gharibabadi, confirmed the agreement on state television but said Iran would not start implementing it until it was signed on Friday.

Pakistan has emerged as a key mediator in the US-Iran negotiations, facilitating contacts between Washington and Tehran and hosting diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the conflict.

Chairman of the Pakistan Peoples Party and former Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has welcomed the conclusion of the Peace Deal between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran.

“I warmly welcome the conclusion of the Peace Deal between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran, an important first step towards reducing tensions and advancing peace through dialogue. This positive development reflects the statesmanship and commitment of all parties involved,” he said in a statement.

He commended Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif for his leadership and vision in facilitating this process, and Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir for his steadfast support for regional stability.

“I also acknowledge Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the dedicated diplomatic teams from all participating countries whose professionalism, perseverance, and quiet efforts behind the scenes helped make this achievement possible,” he said.

The deal was negotiated through mediators that included Pakistan and Qatar, who initially got a two-week ceasefire agreement on April 8. The ceasefire was extended till the completion of the talks.

The US and Israel launched attacks on Iran on February 28 that saw Tehran lose several of its top leadership, including the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council Ali Larijani, Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Commander Mohammad Pakpour, Defence Minister Aziz Nasirzadeh, among others.

Khamenei’s son, Mojtaba, is now the supreme leader, but has not been seen in public since the war began.

She doesn’t play with cars, she races them

0
She doesn’t play with cars, she races them

Srinagar, Jun 14: At 11, Atiqa Mir speaks the language of motorsport speed, acceleration and racing strategy with a confidence that would leave most adults astonished.

She knows the importance of strengthening her neck, shoulders and core. She understands that every lap is an opportunity to improve. And she knows exactly where she wants to be in the next few years.

“Formula One,” she says without hesitation.

For most children her age, life revolves around school, friends and gadgets. For Atiqa, it revolves around race tracks spread across Europe, training sessions and podium finishes.

The young karting sensation, whose family traces its roots to Kashmir but is now settled in Dubai, has already become a recognised name in global karting circles. Yet, sitting in Kashmir during a family visit and speaking with remarkable composure, she comes across as a child singularly focused on one thing, speed.

Interestingly, she says she never really had the childhood toys many girls are associated with.

“I only had cars and I still do,” she says, smiling.

The fascination with motorsport began early.

Her father, Asif Mir, is a former Formula Asia driver and India’s first national karting champion. As a toddler, Atiqa would watch him race on tracks in Dubai. Those moments unknowingly sowed the seeds of an extraordinary dream.

“I used to watch my dad drive when I was three or four years old and I got inspired by him,” she recalls.

By the age of six, she had entered her first national-level competition.

“I finished second in my first race. Since the beginning, I knew I was really fast and that I had lots of potential,” she says.

The statement is not one of arrogance but one of self-belief, something that appears to define her personality.

Today, her racing calendar is packed with competitions across Europe. Just weeks ago, she created history in Greece during the Champions of the Future Academy Programme.

“I became only the third driver ever to do a clean sweep, qualifying on pole and winning all the races, including the final,” she says, her face lighting up at the memory.

In a sport largely dominated by boys, Atiqa often finds herself among the few girls on the grid. Most of her competitors are older and physically stronger.

Does that intimidate her?

Not really.

“The boys bully me on the track, but then I bully them back with speed,” she says with a laugh.

Perhaps that single sentence best captures the young racer, fearless, competitive and quietly determined.

Yet, racing at high speeds requires sacrifices, and Atiqa has accepted them early.

There is no social media in her life. No phone either.

“I think it is best to focus on one task at a time,” she says.

There is also little room for junk food.

“I am trying not to eat fries or pizzas and other unhealthy things. I eat a lot of proteins and train really hard because now I am racing with boys who are much older than me and fitness makes a big difference.”

Her training routine revolves around exercises designed specifically for motorsport.

“In karting, there is no seat belt. The only things holding you are your arms and core, so it is really important to be strong there.”

Despite her growing international profile, she remains grounded.

When she returns to school after winning a race, her classmates bombard her with questions.

“They ask me how many races there were, how fast we go and how many competitors were there. It is a lot of fun talking to them.”

There are trophies and accolades now. Fans approach her for photographs and autographs. But fame, she insists, has not changed her routine.

School remains equally important.

“I study in the mornings before going to the track and then again in the evenings after racing.”

Listening quietly nearby is her father, Asif Mir, a man who perhaps understands the demands of motorsport better than most.

Interestingly, he was initially reluctant to let his daughter race.

“I knew how difficult motorsport is and how demanding the journey to Formula One can be. Initially, I was opposed to it,” he says.

But Atiqa was persistent. “She kept wanting to go to the track. Then one day I could see signs of talent and here we are.” He knows the path ahead is steep.

Motorsport is among the world’s most expensive sports. It demands relentless travel, sophisticated equipment and enormous financial commitment.

Yet, like his daughter, he speaks less about the obstacles and more about possibilities.

For Atiqa, the road ahead leads to Italy, where she will contest another round of the Champions of the Future Academy Programme.

Beyond Italy lies an even bigger destination.

In five years, she wants to be competing in Formula Three or Formula Two. Her ultimate ambition is to reach Formula One at the earliest possible age. It is an audacious dream. But then, everything about Atiqa Mir’s story is unusual.

An 11-year-old girl with Kashmiri roots who never played with dolls, has no social media, avoids junk food and spends her childhood travelling from one race track to another. Most children count birthdays. Atiqa Mir counts laps. And somewhere between those laps and podium finishes, she is racing towards a dream called Formula One.
