Chowdry Ramzan raises food security, banking issues at Parliament panel meet

Kupwara, Jan 6: Member of Parliament Chowdry Mohammad Ramzan attended a high-level meeting involving Members of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Food Distribution and Consumer Affairs, Chief Secretaries, Commissioner Secretaries, and Managing Directors and CEOs of major banks, including State Bank of India, Indian Bank and Canara Bank. Several critical public-interest issues were discussed during the meeting.

Addressing food security concerns, MP Ramzan expressed serious concern that the distribution of food grains and essential ration items under the National Food Security framework is still based on the 2011 beneficiary survey.

He pointed out that after nearly 14 years, significant changes in population and socio-economic conditions have taken place, leading to the exclusion of many deserving families from food security coverage. He strongly urged that until a fresh survey is conducted, alternative arrangements must be made to ensure food grains and essential supplies reach all eligible left-out beneficiaries, so that no family is deprived of its right to food. His intervention was appreciated and lauded by other members of the Committee.

The MP also raised consumer concerns regarding the alleged distribution of substandard “plastic rice” under the Public Distribution System. He sought a clear factual clarification from the authorities and details of action taken if such complaints are found to be genuine. Emphasising that food safety and quality are non-negotiable, particularly in welfare schemes meant for the poor and vulnerable, he called for strict quality checks, transparent monitoring mechanisms and stringent action to prevent recurrence of such incidents and to restore public confidence in the food supply system.

On banking issues, Chowdry Mohammad Ramzan highlighted the sharp disparity between high loan interest rates charged to customers, often ranging from 11 to 14 per cent, and the relatively low interest rates of around 5 to 6 per cent offered on deposits. While acknowledging the substantial profits reported by banks, he stressed that customers and depositors form the backbone of the banking system. He urged a review of interest rate policies to ensure they are balanced, transparent and fair in the larger public interest.

Raising concerns over digital banking, the MP pointed out that while UPI transactions are largely free, customers are often burdened with charges on debit and credit card transactions, frequently without proper awareness or informed consent. He noted that these hidden charges cumulatively impose an unnecessary financial burden on ordinary citizens and urged that such charges be reviewed and waived in the public interest to keep digital banking affordable, transparent and inclusive, especially for small account holders and first-time users.

The MP further drew attention to customer service standards in banks, particularly the lack of human sensitivity in dealing with customers, including senior citizens. He stressed that arrogance, unruly conduct or insensitive behaviour by bank staff is unacceptable and must attract strict and deterrent action. He also called for dedicated facilities for senior citizens and persons with disabilities, including adequate seating, priority assistance, barrier-free access and the mandatory availability of clean toilets and washrooms at all bank branches to ensure citizen-centric banking services.

At the conclusion of the meeting, MP Chowdry Mohammad Ramzan was warmly felicitated and accorded a gracious welcome by senior officials, including Chief Secretaries, Commissioner Secretaries, and the Managing Directors and CEOs of the banks present.

No fare hike yet, proposal pending with govt: RTO Kashmir

Srinagar, Jan 06: Regional Transport Officer (RTO) Kashmir, Qazi Irfan on Tuesday said that no increase has been effected in transport fares so far, clarifying that any revision will only come into force after formal approval by the government.

Talking to the news agency Kashmir News Trust, the RTO said that the Transport Commissioner had held deliberations with transporter bodies from both Kashmir and Jammu divisions. During these discussions, a proposal recommending an increase of a specific percentage in bus fares was drafted and submitted to the Fare Fixation Committee, which subsequently forwarded it to the government for consideration.

“The proposal is presently with the government. Till date, there has been no increase in any transport fare. The decision now rests with the government, and only after approval will revised rates be officially notified,” he said.

On the issue of outside vehicles being purchased by locals, the RTO said such vehicles are mandatorily required to be registered with the local transport office along with complete documentation. He pointed out that no objection certificates have a validity of only six months, but there are cases where vehicles brought from outside states have not been re registered for two to three years, which constitutes a clear violation of rules.

He said the transport department has taken note of such cases and enforcement action will be taken to ensure compliance with registration norms.

Addressing traffic congestion in Srinagar city, the RTO said every effort is being made to ease pressure on roads. He said measures such as restricting the movement of e rickshaws on major routes have already been implemented as part of a broader decongestion strategy.

“This is not a one time exercise. Traffic management is a continuous process, and further steps will be taken in coordination with the traffic department to improve movement in the city,” he added. [KNT]

Gold prices in the national capital increased by Rs 1,100 to Rs 1,41,500 per 10 grams, the All India Sarafa Association said.

“Gold extended its gains on Tuesday, supported by a softer US dollar and dovish comments from Federal Reserve officials, which reinforced market expectations for potential interest-rate cuts in the coming months,” Saumil Gandhi, Senior Analyst – Commodities at HDFC Securities, said.

Silver prices also witnessed robust buying in the bullion market. The white metal continued its rally for the third consecutive day by surging Rs 7,000 to Rs 2,51,000 per kilogram (inclusive of all taxes) from the previous close of Rs 2,44,000 per kg.

In the international market, spot gold went up by USD 11.45, or 0.26 per cent, to USD 4,460.49 per ounce.

“Spot gold is trading with a gain at around USD 4,460 per ounce, driven by the geopolitical risk escalation as the US captured and removed the Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro,” Praveen Singh, Head of Commodities, Mirae Asset ShareKhan, said.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has threatened further strikes if Caracas continues to defy US efforts to open up its oil business and curb drug trafficking, while also weighing action against Colombia and Mexico over illegal drug flows.

Bullion prices are hovering close to record highs in the international markets and could scale fresh peaks if global geopolitical tensions intensify further or incoming US data bolsters expectations that the Federal Reserve may need to ease monetary policy more forcefully than currently priced, Renisha Chainani, Head – Research at Augmont, said.

CPI(M) protests in Jammu against US action on Venezuela; move violation of international law, says Tarigami

Jammu, Jan 06: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Tuesday held a protest demonstration in Jammu against what it termed as US aggression on Venezuela.

The protest was led by CPI(M) MLA Muhammad Yousuf Tarigami, who strongly condemned the actions of the United States, describing them as a blatant violation of international law.

Addressing the media, Tarigami said the US has no right to interfere in the internal affairs of a sovereign nation.
