Woman dies in fire incident in Jammu

Jammu, June 14: The family and relatives of a woman, who died in a mysterious fire incident at her in-laws’ place on the intervening night of June 13 and 14, on Sunday afternoon blocked the road outside sub district hospital Akhnoor in Jammu district, seeking probe into her death.

The uncle and brother of the deceased, identified as Poonam Kalsi, alleged that they were not informed by her in-laws about the incident till she died.

“They are claiming that she died in a fire incident which erupted late Saturday night. However, her father-in-law and mother-in-law and other members of the family did not bother to inform us immediately. We were given news only this morning by her husband, presently in Leh. When we reached there, her dead body was being transported in an ambulance,” they shared with the media persons.

Her brother said that Poonam left for her in-laws’ house on Saturday after spending two days at her maternal house.

“I, myself, dropped her at Sungal Morh, on the way to her (in-laws’) residence on Saturday,” he said.

The family and relatives alleged that the victim was being regularly harassed by her in-laws, particularly her father-in-law and mother-in-law, hence they suspected their role behind her death.

The allegations, however, have not been officially confirmed.

As the blockade disrupted traffic in the area, senior officers of Police and civil administration reached the spot to pacify the protesters and persuade them to lift dharna.

Meanwhile, the Police have initiated investigation after registration of the case.

India known as nation with world’s largest healthcare programme: PM Modi

India known as nation with world’s largest healthcare programme: PM Modi

New Delhi, June 14: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said the country has worked to make quality healthcare more affordable and accessible in the past 12 years, and the government will keep working on all such initiatives to build a healthy India.

Modi also said the government feels proud when “India is known as the nation with the world’s largest healthcare programme, Ayushman Bharat, which provides top-quality healthcare to the most vulnerable”.

“Over the last 12 years, India has worked to make quality healthcare more affordable and accessible,” he said in a post on X.

The prime minister said other efforts like PM Bharatiya Jan Aushadhi Pariyojana have made medicines, stents and knee implants affordable, and this has helped many people.

At the same time, he said, medical education has also become more accessible to people due to more institutions and seats being available.

“We will keep building on this ground covered so far in order to build a healthy India,” he said.

The ‘MyGov India’, a flagship citizen engagement platform of the central government, stated that healthcare accessibility is one of the most important investments a nation can make.

“Over the past 12 years, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, India has made significant strides to ensure quality healthcare reaches more people, more efficiently, and more affordably. The healthcare ecosystem today is more accessible, resilient, and future-ready for its citizens,” it said.

The MyGovt India further said a stronger healthcare system starts with more doctors, better training and wider access to medical education.

“Over the years, aspiring medical professionals have gained opportunities closer to home, including in regions that previously lacked such institutions. The result is a growing pool of skilled healthcare talent ready to serve a healthier India,” it said.

For millions of families, the fight against TB is no longer being fought in the shadows, the platform said, adding that through early detection, wider screening, improved treatment access and community participation, India is accelerating its journey towards a TB-free future.

Some of the diseases that once posed major public health challenges are steadily being pushed into history, it said.

“Improved surveillance, stronger healthcare delivery, and sustained public health efforts are helping India reduce disease burden and move towards eliminating several preventable illnesses altogether,” it added.

India’s Russian oil imports rise in May as refiners boost purchases

India’s Russian oil imports rise in May as refiners boost purchases

New Delhi, June 14: India remained the world’s second-largest buyer of Russian fossil fuels in May, importing an estimated 5.8 billion euros (USD 6.7 billion) worth of Russian hydrocarbons as refiners stepped up crude purchases from Moscow, European think tank Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA) said in a report.

Crude oil accounted for about 83 per cent of India’s imports from Russia during the month, valued at 4.8 billion euros, while oil products and coal imports stood at 550 million euros and 429 million euros, respectively.

“India’s total crude import volumes recorded an 8 per cent month-on-month increase in May. This is partially explained by a 21 per cent month-on-month increase in Russian imports,” CREA said.

Some of India’s largest refining hubs recorded notable increases in Russian crude arrivals. Unloaded volumes at the Vadinar refinery in Gujarat rose 36 per cent from April levels, while deliveries to the Jamnagar refining complex in the state increased 14 per cent.

According to CREA, state-run refiners also expanded purchases after resuming imports earlier this year. The New Mangalore and Visakhapatnam refineries, which had halted Russian crude imports at the end of November 2025, continued buying Russian oil after restarting purchases in March.

Russian crude deliveries to New Mangalore rose 13 per cent month-on-month in May, while imports at Visakhapatnam jumped 42 per cent, it said.

The Paradip refinery on Odisha’s east coast also unloaded its highest volume of Russian crude in two years, underscoring the continued attractiveness of discounted Russian barrels for Indian refiners despite evolving geopolitical and sanctions-related pressures.

India emerged as one of the largest buyers of Russian oil since Western sanctions and trade restrictions reshaped global energy flows following Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine. Indian refiners have consistently increased purchases of discounted Russian crude, helping offset higher energy costs while boosting refining margins and exports of petroleum products.

The latest figures suggest Russian oil continues to account for a significant share of India’s crude import basket, even as the country diversifies supplies from the Middle East, Africa and the United States.

According to CREA, China bought 50 per cent of Russia’s crude exports in May, followed by India (36 per cent), Turkiye (6 per cent), and the EU (5 per cent).

“In May 2026, China remained the largest global buyer of Russian fossil fuels, accounting for 38 per cent (Euro 7.0 billion) of Russia’s export revenues from the top five importers. Crude oil made up 69 per cent (Euro 4.8 bn) of China’s purchases, followed by pipeline gas (Euro 618 million), then coal (Euro 525 million), and lastly LNG (Euro 510 million). Oil products (Euro 479 million) constituted the remainder of China’s imports,” it said.

CREA said despite the EU’s ban on imports of oil products made from Russian crude on January 21, 2026, 10 shipments of oil products from refineries using Russian crude were unloaded at EU ports in the month of May.

“Refineries using Russian crude in India, Turkiye, Brunei, and Georgia exported Euro 641 million of oil products to sanctioning countries in May 2026. The importers included the EU (Euro 174 million), Australia (Euro 275 million), the US (Euro 147 million) and New Zealand (Euro 45 million). An estimated Euro 214 million of these products were refined from Russian crude,” it said.

Exports to the US originated at Reliance Industries Ltd’s Jamnagar refinery, the SOCAR-owned STAR refinery in Turkiye, and the Tupras Izmit refinery as well. “In the prior three months, 39 per cent of the STAR refinery’s crude oil feedstock and 15 per cent of the Jamnagar refinery’s feedstock came from Russia,” it added.

Trump says US-Iran deal to be signed Sunday

Trump says US-Iran deal to be signed Sunday

Washington, June 14: US President Donald Trump on Saturday said a deal to end the war with Iran would be signed on Sunday and that the strategic Strait of Hormuz would be “open to all” immediately afterwards.

Trump’s comments came hours after Pakistan indicated that the United States and Iran were in the final stage of negotiations and that an electronic signing ceremony for the agreement was scheduled for Sunday. However, there is no immediate comment from Iran on the reported timeline.

“The Deal is scheduled to get signed tomorrow, and immediately after it is signed, the Hormuz Strait is OPEN TO ALL,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social, signalling what could be a major diplomatic breakthrough after months of conflict and negotiations.

At the same time, Trump kept the threat of fresh attacks dangling if the deal failed to pan out as expected.

“We look forward to working with Iran, and the entire Middle East, long into the future. Hopefully, this process will all work out quickly, easily, and smoothly. If it doesn’t, we have the ultimate alternative, hopefully never to be used again,” he said.

The US president also contrasted the proposed agreement with the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) negotiated under former US president Barack Obama.

“Barack Hussein Obama’s Deal with Iran, the JCPOA, was an easy, beautiful, smooth road to a Nuclear Weapon, which Iran would have had six years ago, and would have used long before now.

“My Agreement with Iran is the exact opposite, A WALL TO NO NUCLEAR WEAPON! In fact, they no longer want a Nuclear Weapon, nor will they have one, either through purchase, development, or any other form of procurement,” he said.

Trump further claimed that Iran’s nuclear programme had been effectively neutralised and said the remaining nuclear material would be disposed of at a later stage.

“At the appropriate time, when all is calm, we will go in and get the Nuclear Dust, buried deep under the powerful sunken granite mountains, thanks to our beautiful B-2 Bombers and their brilliant pilots, and downblend and destroy it, whether in Iran, or the United States,” he said.

Earlier, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said a US-Iran peace deal could be finalised within the next 24 hours, as Islamabad indicated that an electronic signing ceremony was expected on Sunday.

The indication came in a statement issued on Saturday by the Foreign Office after a telephonic conversation between Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan.

“They welcomed the US-Iran negotiations in their final stage, with the electronic signing ceremony scheduled for tomorrow (Sunday), and expressed the hope that this important development will contribute to lasting peace and stability in the region,” it said.

The Saudi foreign minister appreciated Pakistan’s “consistent and sustained efforts” in support of mediation and dialogue throughout the process, the statement said.

The two leaders also discussed the forthcoming Regional Four Foreign Ministers (R-4) meeting, scheduled to be held in Egypt later this month.

“We are closer to a peace deal than ever before. With finalisation likely expected in the next 24 hours, Pakistan is preparing for the electronic signing of the peace deal immediately after, followed by technical level talks next week,” Sharif said in a social media post.

He thanked the United States and Iran for their “ongoing commitment” during the negotiations and expressed appreciation for support from countries in the region.

“We are confident that this historic peace deal will form a strong foundation for lasting peace,” he said in the post in which he tagged US President Trump, Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and the country’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

On Friday, Araghchi had suggested progress in the negotiations, saying the “Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding has never been closer”.

“Pending its finalisation, the media should refrain from entering speculation about its content. In line with our responsible and transparent approach, all details will be shared with the public in due course,” Araghchi had said in a social media post.

The conflict, which began on February 28, has rattled global markets, tested regional alliances and intensified diplomatic efforts to secure a negotiated settlement.

Sharif on Saturday also spoke with Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, during which he expressed appreciation for Qatar’s “strong and steadfast support” for Pakistan’s peace efforts and said a peace deal was “ready for signatures by the relevant parties very shortly”, according to a statement issued by the Pakistan Prime Minister’s Office.

The statement said the Qatari leader praised Pakistan’s role in advancing diplomatic efforts. Both leaders expressed hope that the initiative would contribute to lasting peace in the region and agreed to remain in close contact in the coming days, it said.

Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar also had separate phone calls with EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas, Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis, Egypt Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan.

Dar discussed with the four leaders the progress in the ongoing US-Iran engagement, with all sides expressing hope that the diplomatic efforts would contribute to “lasting peace and stability in the region”, according to social media posts by Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Pakistan has emerged as a key mediator in the US-Iran negotiations, facilitating contacts between Washington and Tehran and hosting diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the conflict.

Days after a fragile ceasefire was established in April, Islamabad hosted the first round of peace talks. It was attended by senior officials from both sides but they failed to clinch a deal.

Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam seek bail again in Delhi riots conspiracy case

Former JNU students Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam have approached a Delhi court seeking bail in the 2020 Delhi Riots conspiracy case after a recent Supreme Court observation raised questions over the interpretation adopted while denying them bail earlier, according to Bar & Bench.

Additional Sessions Judge Dr Sumedh Sethi of the Karkardooma Court on Friday fixed July 4 for hearing the bail applications filed by both accused, the legal news portal reported. Bar & Bench said the fresh pleas were moved after a Supreme Court bench questioned the interpretation relied upon by the apex court in rejecting their earlier bail requests.

In his application, Imam has argued that despite more than six months having passed since the Supreme Court’s judgment denying bail, there has been no meaningful progress in the trial, with arguments on framing of charges still incomplete. He has also contended that he has spent nearly six years in custody in the case, according to the report.

Khalid and Imam are among several accused booked under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in connection with the alleged larger conspiracy behind the 2020 Delhi riots. Bar & Bench reported that the trial court will consider their fresh bail pleas on July 4.
