Multi-layered security shield put in place for Amarnath Yatra 2026

With the Amarnath Yatra 2026 scheduled to commence on July 3, security forces in Anantnag district have ramped up preparations to ensure a safe and seamless pilgrimage for lakhs of devotees.

SSP Anantnag Amod Ashok Nagpure has affirmed that police and other agencies are fully geared up, leaving “no loopholes” in the security grid.

Giving details, SSP Nagpure said the multi-layered security apparatus put in place along the Pahalgam route from Anantnag to the holy cave shrine. “The police is ready for the Yatra,” he said.

SSP said that they have deployed 140 CRPF companies across the route from Anantnag to the cave. These, he said, are supplemented by specialised units, including Markhor (likely referring to elite mountain/commando teams), Snow Leopards, and Special Operations Group (SOG) teams of the J&K Police, along with other CRPF deployments. “Senior officers have been assigned specific responsibilities to oversee operations.

The entire area has been divided into 19 zones, with dedicated senior police officers overseeing each sector for coordinated response and monitoring,” he said.

Control rooms, he said, have been established at strategic locations to ensure real-time coordination.

“Preventive measures are in place against inimical and unwanted elements, with proactive intelligence-based actions,” he said, adding that hills and river belts are undergoing double sanitisation by the Army, Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), and J&K Police to eliminate any potential threats.

He informed that approximately 400 CCTVs have been installed along the route, with the facial recognition system significantly intensified for enhanced surveillance. Besides, he said, 28 watch towers have been set up at key vantage points to provide panoramic oversight of the terrain.

Additionally, the Pehchan app has been introduced for QR-based verification of service providers, ensuring only authorised personnel and vendors operate in the Yatra area.

SSP Nagpure extended a strong assurance to devotees: “We appeal to pilgrims to come without any fear.” He emphasised that all possible measures have been taken for their safety and convenience, urging them to focus on the spiritual journey while security forces handle the responsibility.

The Yatra, which attracts hundreds of thousands of pilgrims annually, holds immense religious significance for Hindus. This year’s arrangements come amid heightened focus on pilgrim safety following past incidents. Overall, central agencies are deploying a record number of CAPF companies (reports indicate around 670 across routes) for comprehensive protection.

Senior officials, including the SSP, have been conducting regular reviews, mock drills, and on-ground inspections in areas like Pahalgam, Langabal, and Nunwan to fine-tune arrangements. Construction and upgradation of police establishments are also progressing rapidly to bolster infrastructure.

With robust multi-agency coordination involving the Army, CAPF, J&K Police, and civil administration, authorities are optimistic about a peaceful and successful Amarnath Yatra 2026, running until August.

Pioneering Indian shooting coach Jaspal Rana dies at 49

Pioneering Indian shooting coach Jaspal Rana dies at 49

New Delhi, Jun 12: Jaspal Rana, one of India’s finest pistol shooters who made a hugely successful transition to coaching and guided Manu Bhaker to epoch-making twin bronze medals at the Paris Olympics, has shockingly died at a mere 49 years of age after battling cardiac complications.
Rana is survived by his wife, Reena Rana, daughter Devanshi, son Yuvraj, father Narayan Singh Rana, and his two siblings, Sushma Singh and Subhash Rana.

National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) president Kalikesh Narayan Singh Deo said Rana breathed his last at Delhi’s Max Super Speciality Hospital on Thursday night.
Dr Balbir Singh, Group Chairman (Cardiac Sciences, Pan Max & Chief of Interventional Cardiology and Electrophysiology) at Max, said Rana was brought to the hospital in a critical condition on June 1.
“Mr. Jaspal Rana presented with an acute heart attack that was already three days old. He had been travelling and continued to experience chest pain before arriving at the hospital in a very critical condition,” Singh said.
“The artery responsible for the heart attack was completely blocked. His heart’s pumping function was severely weakened, and he was in heart failure,” he added.

The hospital said Rana responded well to treatment and had shown significant recovery before the sudden deterioration.
“Mr. Rana had recovered significantly and was fit for discharge today. However, he unfortunately suffered a sudden cardiac rupture while asleep, which led to his demise,” Singh said.

Rana’s untimely death has left the shooting fraternity in a state of shock. His last rites would be conducted in Varanasi on Saturday.
His stunning death has created a massive void in India’s coaching leadership staff as the shooters gear up for the Asian Games later this year and the NRAI would have to thrash out a fresh plan to ensure that the preparations remain on track.
Rana was serving as the high-performance coach for Indian pistol shooters.
He had initially fallen ill aboard the Indian contingent’s return flight from the ISSF World Cup in Munich, Germany. After landing in New Delhi, he was immediately hospitalised and had a stent installed to clear a cardiac blockage.

The pistol ace, who was considered a maverick in Indian shooting circles for his outspoken demeanour and passion for the sport, was a prodigal talent and won his first national level gold at just 12 years of age.

His international breakthrough were the 25m centre fire pistol gold medals at the 1994 Commonwealth and Asian Games.
In fact, the Asiad gold was India’s first in 16 years after Raja Randhir Singh opened the account in 1978. Randhir had passed away recently after battling age-related ailments.

Rana’s biggest moment as a shooter came in the 2006 Doha Asian Games when he snared three gold medals and a silver in a sensational performance that included equalling the world record of the time.

CM Omar flags Srinagar Airport closure, seeks Centre’s intervention

CM Omar flags Srinagar Airport closure, seeks Centre’s intervention

During meetings with Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu, CM Omar sought alternatives including phased runway works, a revised closure schedule, and contingency flight operations from Awantipora to minimise disruption.

CM Omar separately met Union Defence Minister Singh and Union Minister for Civil Aviation Naidu in New Delhi and raised concerns over the proposed closure of Srinagar International Airport from October 1 to 16, 2026, scheduled under Phase III of the runway resurfacing project.

During the meetings, the CM underscored the importance of maintaining uninterrupted air connectivity to Jammu and Kashmir, particularly during the peak autumn tourism season when the Valley attracts a large number of visitors from across the country.

While acknowledging that the resurfacing works are essential for operational safety and fully respecting the operational assessment of the Indian Air Force, CM Omar expressed concern over the timing of the final phase of the project, which coincides with one of the busiest periods for the tourism sector.

The CM informed the Union Ministers that air services to the Valley had already been curtailed since April owing to the earlier phases of the resurfacing programme.

He said that a complete suspension of flights during the first half of October would adversely affect tourism, hospitality, transport, handicrafts, and allied sectors that sustain thousands of livelihoods across J&K.

Highlighting the broader economic implications, CM Omar said the proposed closure could lead to large-scale travel disruptions and cancellations, causing inconvenience to residents and visitors alike while impacting business activity during a crucial tourism season.

In his meeting with the Defence Minister, the CM requested that the Indian Air Force examine the possibility of shortening or phasing the final stage of the runway works without compromising safety or operational requirements.

He requested that, in the event a complete closure of Srinagar Airport becomes unavoidable, minimal civil flight operations, commensurate with the operational capacity of the Awantipora Air Base, may be permitted from the air base during the closure period to ensure essential air connectivity for the region.

Recalling his earlier tenure as CM, he noted that during the runway resurfacing works in September 2010, civil flights had successfully operated from Awantipora under a coordinated arrangement involving the Ministries of Defence and Civil Aviation.

“We are working on possible alternatives to minimise the disruption and maintain a basic flight schedule as was done in the past when the airport closed for similar reasons in 1998 & 2010,” the CM said.

During his meeting with the Union Civil Aviation Minister, he sought intervention to facilitate discussions with the Ministry of Defence on reviewing the timing of Phase III, including the possibility of shortening, phasing or shifting the closure to a leaner travel window without compromising safety requirements.

CM Omar also requested that contingency arrangements be explored in coordination with the Ministry of Defence and the Indian Air Force to ensure continued air connectivity to the Valley in the event the closure remains unavoidable.

The CM emphasised that any alternative operational arrangement would require extensive inter-agency coordination and advance planning, and therefore needed to be initiated well ahead of the scheduled closure period.

India summons US envoy again

India summons US envoy again

In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said Meeks was called to South Block and conveyed India’s “deep concern” over the use of lethal force against civilian shipping in the region. “A strong protest was lodged with him regarding the continuing attacks by U.S. naval forces on commercial vessels carrying Indian mariners in the Gulf of Oman, which have already resulted in the tragic and avoidable loss of three Indian lives,” the MEA said.

The ministry described the use of deadly force against civilian shipping as “unacceptable” and warned that such actions undermine the safety, security and stability of international maritime commerce in an already volatile region. It urged the US administration to ensure that its forces operating in the area take all necessary measures to prevent further loss of civilian lives.

The latest diplomatic démarche came less than 48 hours after India first summoned the senior American diplomat following a US strike on the commercial tanker MT Settebello off the coast of Oman. Of the 24 Indian crew members aboard that vessel, 21 were rescued while three sailors were later confirmed dead.

Tensions escalated further on Thursday when another vessel, MT Jalveer, a Guinea-Bissau-flagged tanker carrying 22 Indian crew members, was struck by US forces in the Gulf of Oman. All crew members were safely evacuated and brought ashore at Shinas port with the assistance of the Royal Navy of Oman and Omani authorities.

According to US Central Command, the vessel was targeted for allegedly attempting to transport Iranian oil in violation of the American blockade on Iran.

The US military said an aircraft fired Hellfire missiles into the ship’s engine room after the crew repeatedly failed to comply with instructions from US forces.

The tanker was subsequently disabled.

The attacks are linked to the wider confrontation between the United States and Iran, which has intensified in recent months. Washington has sought to enforce a maritime blockade aimed at restricting Iranian oil exports, leading to increased military activity in and around the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman, one of the world’s most important shipping corridors through which a significant share of global oil trade passes.

India has repeatedly expressed concern over the impact of the conflict on commercial shipping and the safety of its seafarers.

The country supplies one of the world’s largest pools of merchant mariners, with thousands of Indians serving aboard international vessels operating in the Gulf region.

Following the recent incidents, the government has placed relevant agencies on heightened alert and is coordinating with the Ministry of Shipping, the Navy, foreign governments and shipping companies to safeguard Indian maritime interests.

The latest summons of the US envoy signals a rare public diplomatic disagreement between New Delhi and Washington, whose strategic partnership has expanded significantly over the past two decades. However, India has maintained that the protection of civilian shipping and the safety of Indian nationals remain paramount and has called for an end to attacks on commercial vessels and the restoration of safe and unhindered navigation in international waters.

SpaceX soars 23% in Wall Street debut, makes Elon Musk world’s first trillionaire

SpaceX soars 23% in Wall Street debut, makes Elon Musk world’s first trillionaire

New York, Jun 12: Shares of SpaceX soared 23% in their Wall Street debut on Friday, making the rocket maker’s CEO Elon Musk the first-ever trillionaire.

The shares opened at USD 150 and kept rising, reaching USD 166.90 around 12:20 pm ET. That price gave the company a market value of USD 2.18 trillion. Forbes is now estimating Musk’s net worth at USD 1.1 trillion.

Institutional and retail investors jumped at the opportunity to buy 555.6 million shares of SpaceX at the offering price of USD 135 apiece. The USD 75 billion in proceeds easily topped the previous record IPO from oil giant Saudi Aramco in 2019.

Musk says SpaceX is going public now because it needs money to fund its ambitions of putting satellites and data centres in space and eventually establishing a colony of people on Mars.

Musk earlier marked the opening of trading on Nasdaq, where the company’s are trading under the symbol “SPCX,” by joining a ceremonial bell ringing from Starbase, the South Texas home of SpaceX.

He reiterated his lofty goals “to make life multi-planetary”.

“Not just a few astronauts, I mean literally you,” Musk said. “Whoever you are watching this, SpaceX wants to be able to take you to the moon, take you to Mars and ultimately beyond.”

Known for his technology breakthroughs, as well as wild claims and missed deadlines, Musk was widely expected to break the trillion dollar mark despite SpaceX generating losses as big as its ambitions.

In addition to establishing a one-million person Martian colony, the company has promised to save humanity by establishing other outposts in space, launch data centers the size of football fields into orbit and outdo rivals Anthropic and OpenAI in the race to make money from artificial intelligence.

To reach its goals, SpaceX needs billions more than it currently takes in from its rocket and satellite business. Between the start of 2025 and March 31, 2026, the company lost USD 8.7 billion.

Wall Street bankers that helped take SpaceX public are enthusiastic about the company — and the big fees they will earn — but not everyone thinks the stock price is justified.

Analysts at research firm Morningstar, which doesn’t earn any investment banking fees, wrote that the IPO is “significantly overvalued” because of SpaceX’s unproven technology and massive capital needs.

They estimate the company is only worth USD 780 billion — less than half its IPO value.

Still, Musk has pulled off the seemingly impossible before.

The trillionaire — on paper at least — made his fortune by creating two companies, Zip2 and PayPal, that netted him about USD200 million at sale. He used that money to start SpaceX and invest in Tesla, and defied the odds by creating a space company that figured out how to reuse rockets and a car company that made electric vehicles cool.

Musk has realised vast sums of wealth for himself, much of it in stock he has yet to cash in or grants for shares he’ll only receive if Tesla or SpaceX hit ambitious performance targets.

His recent pay package from Tesla drew criticism from the Vatican. At Tesla, he’s worried shareholders by fighting with regulators or dividing his attention between multiple companies and last year by taking a role in the Trump administration.

But a rising stock price has cured all ills: Since it went public in 2010, Tesla has returned 20,000% for shareholders, or more than USD 1.2 trillion in investor wealth. That has helped lift Musk’s pre-SpaceX IPO worth to USD 795 billion, according to Forbes magazine.

SpaceX is the first of three “megacap” companies expected to go public this year, with Anthropic and OpenAI to follow. Nasdaq even revised its rules to allow SpaceX to gain entry into funds tied to its indexes in 15 days, which means investors will end up buying the rocket maker’s shares much earlier.

Not all investors are thrilled about SpaceX potentially showing up in their holdings of index funds.

Officials from pension funds for firefighters, teachers and other workers in California and New York sent a letter to SpaceX last month decrying some of the provisions in its IPO, including the “super voting shares,” mandatory arbitration of shareholder claims instead of the possibility of lawsuits and how much power Musk will hold over the company.
