Crackdown in Kashmir on suspects, over 150 detained: IGP Kashmir

Srinagar, Dec 13: Jammu and Kashmir Police, in close coordination with other security and intelligence agencies, have launched a large-scale crackdown against suspected individuals, detaining more than 150 suspected individuals so far.

Senior Police officials said the majority of the detentions have taken place in Srinagar, while similar coordinated operations are underway in several other districts of Kashmir.

The ongoing action is aimed at dismantling the support ecosystem that sustains terror outfits.

Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kashmir, Vidhi Kumar Birdi, confirmed the development, stating that “over 150 suspects have been detained at various locations for questioning.”

He said the operation is focused on identifying individuals who provide logistical, financial, communication, and shelter-related support to terrorists.

According to officials, security forces carried out simultaneous raids at the residential premises of individuals believed to be suspects.

They said that the detainees include former terrorists and other troubled mongers.

Officials said that the current crackdown is part of a sustained security strategy that has been unfolding across the Valley over the past several months.

During this period, Police and security agencies have intensified surveillance, conducted targeted searches, and detained suspects to disrupt terror networks before they can regroup or carry out attacks.

Officials said the focus has increasingly shifted to breaking the “invisible chain” of support that enables terrorists to operate on the ground.

Police sources said that the detentions are largely preventive in nature, and those taken into custody are being questioned to establish their alleged links with terror outfits.

Formal arrests will depend on the outcome of investigations and verification of evidence.

The use of stringent laws, including provisions of the Public Safety Act (PSA), remains a possibility in cases where individuals are found to pose a threat to public order or security.

The intensified security action comes in the wake of Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha’s strong reiteration of the government’s resolve to completely uproot terrorism from Jammu and Kashmir.

On Saturday, the LG issued a stern warning, stating that sympathisers, supporters, and facilitators of terror groups would face the harshest legal consequences.

Officials said that the ongoing operations are aimed at ensuring long-term peace and stability in J&K by choking the logistical and financial lifelines of terrorist organisations.

“The backbone of terrorism is its over-ground network. Unless that network is dismantled, sustainable peace cannot be achieved,” a senior security official said.

‘Ajwa’ claims corrective measures taken

‘Ajwa’ claims corrective measures taken

Srinagar, Dec 13: Packaged drinking water brand ‘Ajwa’ has claimed that they have taken “corrective measures” and resumed operations after the issue of a “contaminated water batch” was reported by the Food Safety Department.

It said that the prohibitory order was meant to stop the sale of a “particular batch” and not the “entire stock” of its packaged drinking water brand.

The company said that the order “clearly pertained to a temporary prohibition on the sale and distribution of a specific ‘affected batch’ only, and not a blanket ban on the entire stock, storage, or business operations of ‘Ajwa Packaged Drinking Water’. At no point was any government ban imposed on the brand or its operations.”

The company said it had “voluntarily suspended production, carried out all necessary technical and corrective measures, and resumed operations only after due inspection and clearance by the Food Safety Department.

“The matter stands fully resolved, and the unit is presently compliant with all statutory requirements,” it said.

“I, Yameen-ul-Nabi, Designated Officer, Food Safety District Srinagar, hereby order that the sale, storage, and distribution or display of Ajwa Packaged Drinking water manufactured by M/S Saaf Pani is strictly prohibited within the jurisdiction of Srinagar with immediate effect till further orders,” the Food Safety Department order reads.

CM Omar Abdullah pitches technology-led revival of adventure tourism in J&K

Srinagar, Dec 13: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah unveiled the Curtain Raiser of the 17th Annual Convention of the Adventure Tour Operators Association of India (ATOAI) at the Gulmarg Convention Centre, formally setting the tone for the prestigious national event scheduled to be held in Srinagar from December 17 to 20, 2025.

He said the convention would play a pivotal role in positioning Jammu & Kashmir as a leading global destination for adventure tourism, as per a press release.

The event was attended by Advisor to the Chief Minister Nasir Aslam Wani, MLA Gulmarg Farooq Ahmad Shah, MLA Zadibal Tanvir Sadiq, Director Tourism and Managing Director JKCCC Syed Qamar Sajad, CEO Gulmarg Development Authority Tariq Hussein, Chairman ATOAI Ajeet Bajaj, Head J&K Chapter ATOAI Rauf Tramboo, senior tourism officials, ATOAI members and other stakeholders.

Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister expressed gratitude to ATOAI and its leadership for choosing Srinagar as the venue for its 17th Annual Convention, terming it a strong vote of confidence in favour of Jammu & Kashmir’s tourism. He observed that any meaningful discussion on adventure tourism in India remains incomplete without reference to Jammu and Kashmir, which historically pioneered activities such as mountaineering, trekking, white water rafting and, notably, skiing.

Recalling Gulmarg’s legacy, the Chief Minister said skiing was practised here long before it gained popularity elsewhere in the country. However, he noted with concern that changing circumstances and climatic shifts had caused Jammu and Kashmir to lag behind other destinations that are now more frequently mentioned in national conversations on trekking, mountaineering and rafting.

Highlighting the visible impact of climate change, the Chief Minister drew attention to the stark reduction in snowfall over recent years. He pointed out that while Gulmarg used to receive heavy snowfall by mid-December, recent winters have seen little to none, posing a serious challenge to winter tourism and skiing. “If we do not adapt, skiing in Gulmarg risks becoming a memory rather than a living tradition,” he cautioned. Emphasising the need for technological interventions, the Chief Minister advocated adoption of artificial snow-making systems, as practised in several European ski destinations. He suggested storing rainwater and deploying snow machines when temperatures fall below zero, at least on select slopes, particularly those serviced by newly installed drag lifts. He also proposed the installation of floodlights on certain ski slopes, on the lines of Japan, to extend skiing hours into the evening and maximise tourist activity during short winter days.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah reiterated that the true measure of success in tourism lies not merely in attracting visitors once, but in inspiring them to return repeatedly. He called for a responsible, visitor-friendly approach that ensures memorable experiences and sustained goodwill.

Acknowledging the challenges faced during a particularly difficult year for tourism, the Chief Minister assured all stakeholders of continued government support for Gulmarg and other destinations. He concluded by expressing hope that the forthcoming ATOAI Annual Convention would be successful and mutually beneficial, strengthening Jammu and Kashmir’s standing on the national and global adventure tourism map.
