IFFI 2025 pays tribute to Bollywood superstar Dharmendra

Panaji, Nov 25: The 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) joined the nation in expressing profound grief over the passing of Bollywood superstar Dharmendra, who passed away on Monday.

Noted filmmaker Rahul Rawail delivered an emotional remembrance, reflecting on his cherished memories with one of the brightest stars of the silver screen.

He began by urging everyone to celebrate the extraordinary life of Dharmendra, acknowledging the immense sorrow his family must be enduring.

“He was an iconic actor and an exceptional human being,” Rawail said.

Recalling his days as an Assistant Director on Raj Kapoor’s Mera Naam Joker, Rawail shared how Late Dharmendra portrayed trapeze artist Mahendra Kumar with unmatched dedication.

He narrated how the actor would take an evening flight to Delhi every day for a month, shoot till 5 am and then return to Mumbai to continue filming Aadmi Aur Insaan—a grueling schedule he maintained unfailingly.

Rawail also reminisced about the shooting of Betaab (1983), which marked the debut of Late Shri Dharmendra’s son, Sunny Deol.

While filming in Kashmir, crowds would gather in large numbers just to catch a glimpse of Dharmendra.

After the film’s release, he watched his son’s debut at Gaiety Cinema in Bandra West every evening for several days and would visit Director Rawail’s home afterwards to discuss the film with the same enthusiasm as someone viewing it for the first time each and every day.

Rawail also noted with pride that the legendary actor’s children continue to carry forward his ‘tremendous legacy’.

“Dharam ji was a man whose life must be celebrated, for he brought a lot of pleasure to people”, he said emotionally. He recounted the story of a Delhi police officer who had longed to meet Dharmendra and touch his feet.

Upon learning that the icon had passed away, the officer broke down in grief, called Rawail and expressed his desire to meet Sunny Deol to convey his condolences.

“This is the power of Dharam ji,” Rawail said.

Rawail also called Dharmendra a father figure who nurtured and supported him throughout his career. He also praised him as a wonderful producer.

“We’ve lost a great human being. We were fortunate to have lived in times when icons like Dharmendra ji were working,” he said and expressed gratitude to the IFFI organisers for arranging a special homage to honour the timeless star.

Jammu, Nov 25: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today chaired a meeting at the Civil Secretariat to review the progress of infrastructure projects taken up by the Revenue Department.

The meeting was attended by Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo, Additional Chief Secretary (Financial Commissioner Revenue) Shaleen Kabra, Additional Chief Secretary to the CM Dheeraj Gupta, Principal Secretary Finance Santosh D. Vaidya, Divisional Commissioner Jammu Ramesh Kumar, Secretary Revenue Kumar Rajeev Ranjan, Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, all Deputy Commissioners, and other senior officials. Officers from various districts joined via video conferencing.

At the outset, Secretary Revenue delivered a detailed presentation on 18 major building projects—including tehsil and niabat offices, residential quarters, mini secretariats, and revenue complexes—currently being executed across Jammu and Kashmir. These projects are located in Ramban, Kathua, Poonch, Doda, Udhampur, Reasi, Bandipora, Anantnag, Pulwama, and Srinagar, and form a critical part of the administration’s efforts to strengthen building infrastructure and grassroots governance. The review highlighted certain bottlenecks, including delays in funds disbursement, pending administrative approvals, and legal issues at a few locations.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah emphasised the need to fast-track the remaining projects. He directed officials to adopt a coordinated approach to clear pending approvals, resolve legal impediments, and synchronise financial planning with project timelines to avoid cost escalation. Reiterating the government’s focus on building a modern and efficient revenue administration, the Chief Minister said that timely completion of these infrastructure projects is essential for improving citizen-centric service delivery. He called for enhanced monitoring, proactive inter-departmental coordination, and strict adherence to deadlines.

Winter fear grips expecting mothers in Gurez

Winter fear grips expecting mothers in Gurez

Bandipora, Nov 25: As winter sets in, expecting mothers in the Gurez valley of north Kashmir’s Bandipora district are bracing for a difficult season ahead.

With heavy snowfall expected to cut off road connectivity to Gurez for months, managing medical emergencies — especially complications during pregnancy — is becoming increasingly challenging. The situation is compounded by the absence of a permanent gynaecologist at the Community Health Centre (CHC) in Dawar, the central Tehsil that handles cases from far-flung areas such as Tulail, Bagtore and other remote villages. Tulail itself remains internally cut off for most of the winter.

This lack of specialist care has forced many expecting mothers to relocate to Bandipora district headquarters or nearby villages on verbal advice from local medicos. Those who can afford it move to Srinagar months before the first snowfall. But for many families, relocation is financially impossible, leaving mothers-to-be with no option but to depend on natural births and divine mercy.

“In Gurez, the biggest problem with gynaecology is that every year pregnant women are told in advance to shift to Bandipora or Srinagar during winter,” said Abdul Raheem, a resident.

Residents said relocation is neither simple nor affordable. “It is not just one person who moves — the entire family has to shift. It is very costly. Some people can afford it, some cannot,” a resident said.

Repeated appeals to the government have not resulted in a permanent solution. “We raise this issue each time but expect mothers to continue to suffer in silence,” said Mohammad Hamza Lone.

The rotational posting of a gynaecologist for 15 days has also failed, locals said, as frequent travel, weather disruptions and poor connectivity make it unreliable. Helicopter evacuations during winter depend entirely on weather clarity, leaving critical patients stranded for days.

Residents have urged the administration, the Chief Minister, the Lieutenant Governor and the health authorities to ensure a permanent gynaecologist is posted in Gurez during winter. With a newly inaugurated blood storage facility and surgeons already available, locals say the infrastructure now justifies regular specialist staffing. If a permanent posting is not possible, they suggest posting two gynaecologists on rotation so that at least one is always available during the winter months.

Deputy Commissioner Bandipora, Indu Chib, said the administration is aware of the problem and has “mapped all expecting mothers” whose due dates fall within the next four to five months. “We will arrange accommodation for them at the district headquarters, and they can stay with us,” she said.

Acknowledging the financial hardship of residents from remote areas like Tulail, she said it is extremely challenging for them to relocate months in advance.

The DC added that winter road closures have reduced in recent years, and efforts are underway to keep the Gurez-Bandipora road open for as long as possible. According to the BRO, the road remained closed for only 25 to 30 days over the past two winters.

Helicopter services, she said, will prioritise pregnant women. “We have already met the Army. Our helicopter services are regulated, and we will keep pregnant mothers as a priority.”

She confirmed that while a gynaecologist is posted in Gurez, the posting is not permanent. The matter has been taken up with the Directorate of Health Services, and the administration will again write to them seeking a long-term solution.

Arunachal integral, inalienable part of India”: MEA spokesperson

Arunachal integral, inalienable part of India”: MEA spokesperson

New Delhi, Nov 25: India has issued a strong diplomatic response to China after an Indian woman from Arunachal Pradesh was detained and denied normal transit procedures at Shanghai’s Pudong International Airport, a development that has sparked a diplomatic flashpoint between the two countries. New Delhi issued a sharp rebuttal. Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal firmly rejected Beijing’s territorial claim and condemned the detention as a violation of international aviation norms.

“We have seen statements made by the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the arbitrary detention of an Indian citizen from Arunachal Pradesh, who was holding a valid passport and was transiting through Shanghai International Airport on her onward travel to Japan.

Arunachal Pradesh is an integral and inalienable part of India, and this is a self-evident fact. No amount of denial by the Chinese side is going to change this indisputable reality.

The issue of the detention has been taken up strongly with the Chinese side. Chinese authorities have still not been able to explain their actions, which are in violation of several conventions governing international air travel. The actions by the Chinese authorities also violate their own regulations that allow visa-free transit up to 24 hours for nationals of all countries.”

Officials in New Delhi highlighted that China’s actions appeared to breach multiple aviation norms, including protocols under the Chicago and Montreal Conventions, which govern civil international air travel. Moreover, China’s own immigration rules permit 24-hour visa-free transit, a right allegedly denied in this case. Media reported quoting government sources that a strong demarche was issued in both Beijing and New Delhi, and the Indian Consulate in Shanghai intervened to assist the passenger.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning earlier claimed the traveller was “not subjected to any compulsory measures,” asserting that officials acted “according to laws and regulations”.

She also stated that food and rest were provided. But her remarks drew sharp backlash after she added: “Zangnan is China’s territory. China never acknowledged the so-called Arunachal Pradesh illegally set up by India.”

The incident took place on November 21, when Prema Wang Thongdok, a UK-based Indian citizen from Rupa in Arunachal Pradesh’s West Kameng district, was travelling from London to Japan with a scheduled three-hour layover in Shanghai. Despite holding a valid Indian passport and all required travel documents, she was detained for over 18 hours, repeatedly questioned, and allegedly told that her passport was “invalid” because Arunachal Pradesh is Chinese territory.

In deliberations with DGFT, KCCI seeks revival of Kashmir’s traditional export sector

Srinagar, Nov 25: The Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCC&I) on Tuesday participated in a workshop on “Capacity Building and Export Promotion” organised by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) at Srinagar.

As per a press release, KCCI was represented by its President, Javid Ahmad Tenga, along with several member exporters from the Valley.

The workshop was attended by Joint Director of DGFT, Utpal Kumar, Assistant Director General of DGFT, Aditya Singh Chauhan, officials from Jammu and Kashmir Bank, and representatives of FIEO.

Utpal Kumar detailed the Rs 25,060-crore Export Promotion Mission approved by the Central government, explaining the new incentives, export-supporting digital portals and opportunities arising from lower import duties abroad. He stressed that exporters must stay updated with global trends and utilise platforms such as Trade Connect, Indian Traders and the India Trade Portal. Assistant Director General of DGFT, Aditya Singh Chauhan, also spoke on the schemes for promotion of exports.

Speaking at the event, the President of KCCI, JavidTenga highlighted the urgent need to revive Kashmir’s traditional export sectors.

He said, “Kashmir is known throughout the world for tourism and handicrafts. However, our handicrafts have seen a decline in the last couple of years. In 2023–24 our exports were Rs 1,162 crore, which fell down to Rs 733 crore in 2024–25.”

President KCCI said that the decline from Rs 1,162 crore to Rs 733 crore reflects the stress on artisans, exporters and the wider handicraft trade, and KCCI has been working actively to restore growth and increase exports from Kashmir.

The President informed the DGFT officials that KCCI has already held meetings with the Union Minister of Textiles, Giriraj Singh, and the Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal. He said that multiple challenges have emerged in recent years. After MEIS was converted to ROSCTL, an upper ceiling of Rs 438 was imposed on incentives, which has disadvantaged high-value handmade products. He stressed the need to revisit this ceiling and to introduce a separate HSN code for value-added shawls, which are handmade and require special protection to ensure artisanal sustainability. He said that KCCI has already submitted its detailed recommendations to the concerned Union Ministers.

During the workshop, the President requested DGFT to take up these recommendations on KCCI’s behalf. Joint Director DGFT, Utpal Kumar, assured the Chamber that DGFT will examine the issues once a detailed written representation is submitted.

The President also raised concern over the withdrawal of the Export Interest Subvention from 1 January 2025, which he said has adversely impacted exporters.
