Dry fruit seller picked up for questioning succumbs to burn injuries

Srinagar, Nov 17: A dry fruit seller, who had set himself on fire after being picked up by police for questioning in connection with the terror module case, succumbed to injuries at a hospital here, officials said on Monday.

Bilal Ahmad Wani had himself on fire on Sunday in Qazigund. He was referred to the SMHS hospital here after his condition worsened at a Anantnag hospital late on Sunday, the officials said.

They said Wani succumbed to burn injuries half past midnight.

Wani, along with his son Jasir Bilal, was picked up by police for questioning in connection with the terror module case. While Bilal was subsequently released, his son remains in custody for questioning, they said.

Wani is a neighbour of Dr Muzaffar Rather, who has emerged as a key accused in the ‘white collar terror module’ case.

While Muzaffar is currently believed to be in Afghanistan, his younger brother, Dr Adeel Rather, was arrested from Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh on November 6.

Gold, silver prices decline as stronger dollar weighs on demand

Gold, silver prices decline as stronger dollar weighs on demand

Mumbai, Nov 17: Gold and silver prices fell in the domestic futures market on Monday morning as the US dollar strengthened and global cues remained weak.

At early trade, MCX Gold December futures were trading 0.21 per cent lower at Rs 1,23,300 per 10 grams.

Silver prices also slipped, with MCX Silver December contracts down 0.38 per cent at Rs 1,55,424 per kg.

“Gold has support at $4035-4000 while resistance at $4115-4140. Silver has support at $50.30-49.85 while resistance is at $51.25-51.50,” market experts said.

“In INR gold has support at Rs1,22,950-1,22,380 while resistance at Rs1,24,950-1,25,500. Silver has support at Rs1,53,850-1,52,500 while resistance at Rs1,56,740, 1,57,880,” they added.

The dollar index gained 0.14 per cent, putting pressure on gold demand and prices. Since gold is priced in dollars, a stronger US currency makes the metal costlier for buyers using other currencies, which often reduces its demand.

Investors are now waiting for important US economic data due this week, including the September nonfarm payrolls report scheduled for Thursday.

These figures will give a clearer picture of the US economy’s health and help shape expectations for the Federal Reserve’s December monetary policy decision.

The recent US government shutdown had delayed the release of some economic data.

However, media reports indicate that the Commerce Department’s Bureau of Economic Analysis is preparing to update its schedule for upcoming data releases.

Gold and silver prices experienced a rollercoaster trend last week, slipping from their highs in the last two days after hawkish Fed comments dampened investor sentiment.

“The metals also softened as investors prepared for a busy week of delayed US economic data. The upcoming non-farm payrolls report is expected to offer crucial insight into the Federal Reserve’s policy direction,” market watchers said.

“Expectations of a December rate cut dropped to 46 per cent after hawkish Fed signals. Despite near-term volatility, both precious metals are on track for their strongest annual performance in decades,” they added.

Robust central bank buying and persistent safe-haven interest amid fiscal and geopolitical uncertainty continue to fuel bullion’s upward momentum, as per the experts.

Police conduct verification of fertiliser dealers in J-K’s Doda; examine trade records

Jammu, Nov 16: The police on Sunday conducted verification of fertiliser dealers in Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda to ensure strict compliance with norms and prevent any suspicious activity, an official said.

The drive was conducted following intelligence inputs about potential misuse of certain chemical substances for unlawful activities, the police spokesperson said.

He said special teams carried out extensive inspections of fertiliser shops, wholesale outlets, godowns, and storage facilities across the district.

The verification drive focused on examining stock registers, sale records, transport ledgers, and procurement documents pertaining to fertilisers and other regulated chemicals, he added.

During the inspections, dealers were directed to maintain accurate records, verify customer credentials, and promptly report any suspicious bulk purchase or unusual inquiry related to such chemicals.

Officers also briefed them on their legal responsibilities and emphasised the importance of heightened vigilance given the current security environment, the spokesman said.

Meanwhile, the police have registered a case against a house owner for violating mandatory tenant verification norms.

During routine patrolling in the Nagri Toundwa area, a police team noticed a girl moving under suspicious circumstances around 7.30 pm on Sunday. Questioning revealed that she was living in a rented accommodation in the area for the past 16 days, the spokesman said.

Upon further inquiry, it was established that the house owner, Bablu Sharma, had rented out the premises without completing the mandatory verification or submitting the tenant declaration form, in violation of standing orders of the district magistrate, he said, adding that an FIR has been registered in this regard at Doda police station.

Delhi’s air quality turns ‘severe’ as AQI reading soars to 427

New Delhi, Nov 17: The national capital woke up to dense smog on Monday morning as the average Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 359 at 7 am, falling under the ‘very poor’ category despite the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP)-III in effect across Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR), according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).

A layer of thick smog engulfed several areas, showing little to no improvement from Sunday morning’s AQI of 385.

Bawana recorded the highest AQI level of 427 at 7 am, falling under the ‘severe’ category. In contrast, NSIT Dwarka recorded the lowest AQI of 225, according to the data by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).

Visuals from India Gate and Kartavya Path are blanketed in a layer of toxic smog as the AQI in the area is 341 in the ‘very poor’ category, as claimed by the CPCB.

Chandani Chowk recorded an AQI of 383, RK Puram 366, ITO 394, Punjabi Bagh 384, Patparganj 369, Pusa 365, and Dwaraka Sector-8 356.

A layer of toxic smog lingers in the air of Anand Vihar as the Central Pollution Control Board claimed that the Air Quality Index around the area is 383, categorised as ‘very poor’.

The thick smog, along with deteriorating air quality, mercury continued to hover around the 9 Degree Celsius mark, with some areas recording even lower temperatures.

As per CPCB classification, an AQI between 0-50 is considered ‘good’, 51-100 ‘satisfactory’, 101-200 ‘moderate’, 201-300 ‘poor’, 301-400 ‘very poor’, and 401-500 ‘severe’.

Following the deteriorating air quality in the national capital, the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) III was implemented on November 11 across Delhi by the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM). The measures aim to control emissions through stricter restrictions on construction, vehicular movement and industrial operations.

Under GRAP-III, curbs include a ban on most non-essential construction activities, restrictions on BS-III petrol and BS-IV diesel four-wheelers, suspension of classes for students up to Class 5 with a shift to hybrid or online learning, curbs on industrial operations dependent on non-clean fuel, and a ban on non-emergency diesel generator sets.

Earlier, the Supreme Court directed the governments of Punjab and Haryana to file a status report on the measures taken to curb stubble burning, which contributes to the air pollution crisis in the Delhi-NCR region.

A bench of Chief Justice of India BR Gavai and Justice K Vinod Chandran ordered, “We direct the state of Punjab and Haryana to file a report on what steps are being taken to curb stubble burning.”
Since Diwali, the air quality in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) has been reeling under the ‘very poor’ and ‘severe’ categories in several areas, even as Stage III of the GRAP remains in effect.

Any country doing business with Russia will be ‘very severely’ sanctioned: Trump

Any country doing business with Russia will be ‘very severely’ sanctioned: Trump

New York, Nov 17: US President Donald Trump has warned that any country that does business with Russia will be “very severely sanctioned”, as his administration and Republican lawmakers push ahead with tough legislation targeting Moscow.

Responding to questions from reporters on Sunday on whether it was time for Congress to pass measures aimed at pressuring Russia and President Vladimir Putin, Trump said, “I hear they’re doing that, and that’s okay with me.”

“They’re passing legislation… the Republicans are putting in legislation… very tough sanctioning… on any country doing business with Russia. They may add Iran to that… I suggested it,” he said.

“So any country that does business with Russia will be very severely sanctioned. We may add Iran to the formula,” Trump reiterated.

The Trump administration has imposed 50 per cent tariffs on India, among the highest in the world, including 25 per cent levies for its purchases of Russian energy.

A bill introduced by Senator Lindsey Graham has proposed a 500 per cent tariff on secondary purchase and reselling of Russian oil. The proposal has near-unanimous backing in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Graham and Senator Richard Blumenthal have jointly introduced the Sanctioning Russia Act of 2025, which seeks to impose secondary tariffs and sanctions on “countries that continue to fund Putin’s barbaric war in Ukraine”. The proposed legislation has 85 cosponsors in the Senate.

“President Trump and his team have made a powerful move, implementing a new approach to end this bloodbath between Russia and Ukraine… However, the ultimate hammer to bring about the end of this war will be tariffs against countries, like China, India and Brazil, that prop up Putin’s war machine by purchasing cheap Russian oil and gas,” Graham and Blumenthal had said in a joint statement in July.

Trump plans to meet with Mamdani, says ‘he will work something out’ with New York City’s mayor-elect

Trump plans to meet with Mamdani, says ‘he will work something out’ with New York City’s mayor-elect

West Palm Beach, Nov 17: President Donald Trump indicated on Sunday that he plans to meet with New York City’s mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani and said they’ll “work something out,” in what could be a detente for the Republican president and Democratic political star who have cast each other as political foils.

Trump has for months slammed Mamdani, falsely labeling him as a “communist” and predicting the ruin of his hometown, New York, if the democratic socialist was elected. He also threatened to deport Mamdani, who was born in Uganda and became a naturalised American citizen, and to pull federal money from the city.

Mamdani rose from an obscure state lawmaker to become a social media star and symbol of the resistance against Trump during his mayoral campaign. He campaigned on an array of progressive policies and a message that was stark in its opposition to the aggressive, anti-immigrant agenda Trump has rolled out in his second White House term.

The 34-year-old appealed to a broad cross-section of New Yorkers and defeated one of its political heavyweights, former Governor Andrew Cuomo, by nearly 9 percentage points.

In his election night victory speech, Mamdani said he wanted New York to show the country how to defeat the president. But the day after, while speaking about his plans for “Trump-proofing” New York once he takes office in January, the incoming mayor also said he was willing to work with anyone, including the president, if it can help New Yorkers.

Representatives for Mamdani did not have an immediate comment Sunday night on the president’s remarks, but a spokesperson pointed to the mayor-elect’s remarks last week when he said he planned to reach out to the White House “because this is a relationship that will be critical to the success of the city.”

Trump expressed a similar sentiment on Sunday.

“The mayor of New York, I will say, would like to meet with us. We’ll work something out,” Trump told reporters as he prepared to fly back to Washington after spending the weekend in Florida.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt clarified shortly after that Trump was referring to Mamdani and said no date had been set for such a meeting.

“We want to see everything work out well for New York,” Trump said.

Trump’s comments came as he also said the US may hold discussions soon with Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, after a military buildup near the South American country, “I’ll talk to anybody,” Trump said.

Union Finance Ministry holds ‘Chintan Shivir’ with states on flow of funds

New Delhi, Nov 16: The Union Finance Ministry held a two-day ‘Chintan Shivir’ with states on the present status and issues regarding ‘Just in Time’ flow of funds, use of artificial intelligence (AI) in government processes, and design and implementation issues of Centrally sponsored schemes.

The Chintan Shivir organised by the Finance Ministry’s Department of Expenditure on Thursday and Friday in Sawai Madhopur, Rajasthan, saw participation from finance departments of states including Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Delhi, and Rajasthan. The Finance Ministry sought suggestions on an in-sync, effective, and collaborative approach to fund flows from states.

This was followed by a presentation of the Finance Department of the Government of Rajasthan on how its Integrated Financial Management System is working together with the Public Financial Management System and various fund flow mechanisms of the Central Government to achieve ‘Just in Time’ flow of funds. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, in another interactive session, discussed various advantages and challenges in the use of AI in government processes. Various ways in which AI can be used effectively for decision-making and policy formulation in the Government were also discussed.

On the second day of deliberations, the expenditure department also took inputs from states on the ongoing appraisal or approval process of Centrally Sponsored Schemes ending on March 31, 2026, as the fifteenth finance commission cycle comes to an end. The officials in groups of four made presentations on “diverse topics for bringing in evolving, unique and state-of-the-art thought processes through ‘Chintan’, to enhance functioning and outreach of the government.”

Tennis player Mohammad Qais honoured

Tennis player Mohammad Qais honoured

Srinagar, Nov 16: Thirteen-year-old national tennis player Mohammad Qais was honoured during the grand finale of the Champions Trophy in Srinagar, but for his father, Aijaz Rasool, who coached him himself on local courts, the recognition is bittersweet, as he hopes government support will ensure the young prodigy doesn’t miss another chance to play abroad.

As per a statement, the award recognised Qais’s achievements in national-level tennis and his growing contribution to sports in Jammu & Kashmir.

Meanwhile, Aijaz Rasool, father of Qais, told Greater Kashmir that at 13, Mohammad Qais was already a three-time national player in soft tennis, a district and state champion, and a rising star in lawn tennis.

“I coached him myself,” says Aijaz Rasool, his voice tinged with quiet pride. “I used to play tennis on local courts. When I saw his passion spark, I decided that even if we had no access to trained coaches, I would teach him the basics myself.”

Despite winning medals at nationals, both in sub-junior and senior categories, and earning applause at several tournaments, there’s one moment that still sits heavy in Aijaz’s heart.

“One and a half years ago, he was selected to represent India at an international tournament in Thailand. But his passport was not ready. That opportunity just slipped by,” he said.

Aijaz measures his son’s achievements in more than just physical terms.

“When he gets a medal, I feel energetic,” he says with a smile. “Standing there, watching him, I feel the pain in my body reduce. He is playing not just his game but my dreams too.”

Yet with each tournament, the reality of rising costs looms large. “We have proven the talent,” Aijaz says. “What we now need is support from local sports bodies and from the government. My son shouldn’t miss another chance to represent India.”

LG rules out terror conspiracy, outside interference

LG rules out terror conspiracy, outside interference

Jammu, Nov 16: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Sunday said that there was “no terrorist conspiracy or outside interference angle” in the Nowgam Police Station blast case and it was “just an unfortunate accidental mishap.”

Addressing a gathering at Gurdwara Sant Mela Singh Dastkari Ashram, Digiana in Jammu after attending the Nagar Kirtan, organised to commemorate the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, LG Sinha commended the J&K Police for “dismantling pan-India terror network” and thus preventing planned terror attacks across the country.

He paid glowing tributes to those killed in the Nowgam blast and shared sympathies with the bereaved families.

The LG said that a magisterial inquiry, mandatory under law in such incidents, was already ordered.

“On the night of November 14, 2025, an unfortunate incident took place in Nowgam Police Station of Srinagar. The Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team was lifting samples of explosives recovered from the houses of terrorists and their associates, involved in the recent blast near the Red Fort of Delhi. In this sampling process, at around 11:20 pm, a massive explosion took place, which claimed many lives,” he said, sharing a brief account of the incident.

Expressing grief over the loss of lives, LG Sinha said, “Tragically, we lost some of our brave officials. Those who lost their lives also included personnel from J&K Police and the civil administration. I pay my heartfelt tributes to those killed in the incident and convey my condolences and solidarity with the bereaved families.”

He said that the explosives’ sampling process was ongoing for the past two days.

The LG lauded the role of J&K Police in achieving a major success with their dedication and thorough professionalism by exposing the “white-collar terror network” and saving lives by preventing planned terror attacks across the country.

He was referring to the J&K Police probe into Jaish-e-Muhammad posters in Nowgam in October this year, threatening security forces, which led to the busting of a terror network of professionals spread across the country.

However, LG Sinha said that the Nowgam Police Station blast was purely an accidental mishap.

“In this case, there is no angle of terrorist conspiracy or external interference. Under the legal provisions, in this kind of incident, a magisterial probe is imperative, it is mandatory, and thus, the orders have been issued for such an investigation,” he said.
