Trump arrives in China for talks with Xi

Beijing, May 13: US President Donald Trump arrived in China on Wednesday for a three-day state visit during which he will discuss a host of global issues, including the Iran war, with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Trump, who is visiting China at the invitation of President Xi, was received by Chinese Vice President Han Zheng at the airport.

The leaders of ‌the world’s two largest economies will hold their seventh face-to-face talks. They last met face-to-face in October 2025 in Busan, South Korea.

The US President arrived in China on his second visit in nine years to clinch a trade deal, to end the frictions over tariffs that affected its over USD 525 billion exports to the US.

Trump, who is accompanied by top CEOs, was the last US president to visit China in 2017, during his first term.

President Trump would have a bilateral meeting with Xi on Thursday, US Principal Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly said on Sunday.

The two leaders will meet again on Friday for a bilateral tea and working lunch, she said, adding that the US plans to host the Chinese leader for a reciprocal visit later this year.

Ahead of Trump’s arrival, Chinese Vice-Premier He Lifeng and Scott Bessent completed the final round of trade negotiations in South Korea, details of which are not known.

The talks focused on trade and tariffs, Artificial Intelligence and technology, Taiwan and US’ arms sales to Taipei, Iran and West Asia security and rare earths and supply chains.

Trump’s schedule included a visit to the Temple of Heaven, a complex of imperial temples where emperors would pray for a good harvest.

Ahead of his departure for Beijing, Trump told the media in Washington he would be talking with Xi about trade more than anything else.

He plans to sign more deals with China to buy more American food and aircraft. The two countries also plan to set up a Board of Trade with China to address differences between the countries.

From a trade point of view, China looks to reap a rich harvest as Trump is accompanied by top CEOs of US multinational giants, including Tesla chief Elon Musk and Apple CEO Tim Cook, who have well-entrenched business in China.

Apple has regained the top spot in China’s competitive smartphone market as of early 2026, driven by a 28 per cent surge in iPhone shipments.

In April, Tesla’s China-made vehicle sales (including exports) reached 79,478, a 36 per cent year-over-year increase, signalling a production rebound.

The top US business leaders will be allowed to mingle with their Chinese counterparts at an exclusive international business club, according to Chinese officials.

The global focus on the summit, however, would be on any possible outcome that could end the US-Israeli-Iran war and end the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.

Ahead of Trump’s visit, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi made his first visit to Beijing after the war and held talks with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi.

The US watched his visit closely as China is the largest importer of Iranian oil and shares strategic defence ties with Tehran, and has considerable influence over Iran.

After talks with Araghchi, Wang called on Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz as soon as possible, even as it appreciated Tehran’s commitment not to develop nuclear weapons, a prime demand of Trump to end the war.

Commenting on Wang-Araghchi talks, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said, “I hope the Chinese tell him what he needs to be told. And that is what you are doing in the Strait, which is causing you to be globally isolated. You’re the bad guy in this.”

China’s anxieties over the Gulf war increased, especially after Trump imposed a blockade of Iranian ports, restricting Iran’s oil exports to China.

Bert Hoffman, former World Bank country director for China, said China wants the Iran war to end because it has many partners in the region, including Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Kuwait. “So they don’t like to see wars, they like to have stability,” he said.

In its editorial on Trump’s visit, state-run Global Times said Xi has held multiple telephone conversations and meetings with him, which have helped correct the course of the bilateral relationship and steer it clear of hidden dangers at critical moments.

For China-US relations to truly stabilise and improve in the future, the most fundamental step is to fully and faithfully implement the important consensus reached by both leaders, it said.

From China’s point of view, the Taiwan issue was expected to figure prominently in the talks.

Last week, China’s Foreign Minister Wang told US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, during their telephone talks, that the US should make the right choice about the self-ruled Taiwan.

China claims Taiwan as part of its own and has been ramping up military pressure on the island with periodic military drills around the island.

Cabinet clears upgradation of Nagpur International Airport

Cabinet clears upgradation of Nagpur International Airport

New Delhi, May 13: The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the upgradation of the Nagpur International Airport through a public-private partnership.

The Cabinet has cleared the extension of the lease period of the Airports Authority of India’s land allotted to MIHAN India Ltd beyond August 6, 2039. This will enable MIL to license the airport to GMR Nagpur International Airport Ltd (GNIAL), an official release said.

Briefing media persons on the Cabinet decisions, Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the upgradation and modernisation of the airport has been approved.

With the extension of the lease period for the land beyond August 6, 2039, the civil aviation ministry said it would now become co-terminus with the 30-year concession period of GNIAL.

“This is expected to usher in a new era of growth and infrastructure advancement for Nagpur airport. With private sector efficiency and government oversight, the airport is poised to see significant investment, modernisation, and improved passenger and cargo services,” the ministry said in the release.

In 2009, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and Maharashtra Airport Development Company Ltd (MADC) set up the joint venture MIL with an equity structure of 49 per cent and 51 per cent, respectively.

“Though Airport assets of AAI were transferred to MIL in 2009 for airport operation, the lease deed got delayed due to land demarcation issues. Subsequently, AAI land has been leased to MIL up to 06.08.2039,” the release said.

Later in 2016, MIL floated a global tender for identifying a partner to operate the airport under the public-private partnership model.

GMR Airports Ltd (GAL) emerged as the highest bidder, with a quoted revenue share of 5.76 per cent.

“This was later revised to 14.49 per cent of Gross Revenue. Subsequently, MIL annulled the bidding process in March, 2020. This annulment was successfully challenged by GAL before the Hon’ble Bombay High Court.

“Thereafter, the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India also ruled in favour of GAL. Pursuant to the Supreme Court Judgement dated 27th September, 2024, MIL signed a Concession Agreement with 2nd JVC, i.e. GMR Nagpur International Airport Ltd. (GNIAL) on 8th October, 2024,” the release said.

The loss-making airline, which has already reduced flights on certain routes, said the latest announced rationalisation of services will be in place during the June-August period.

According to the statement, the airline will continue to operate more than 1,200 international flights every month.

Gold soars by Rs 8,550, silver by Rs 20,500 after import duty hike

Gold soars by Rs 8,550, silver by Rs 20,500 after import duty hike

New Delhi, May 13: Gold prices soared by Rs 8,550 to a little over Rs 1.65 lakh per 10 grams in the local market here on Wednesday after the government increased the import duty on precious metals to 15 per cent.

Silver prices jumped by Rs 20,500 to Rs 2,97,500 per kg in Delhi markets from Rs 2,77,000 per kg (inclusive of all taxes) on the previous day, according to the All India Sarafa Association.

Gold of 99.9 per cent purity increased by Rs 8,550, or over 5 per cent, to Rs 1,65,350 per 10 grams (inclusive of all taxes) from the previous close of Rs 1,56,800 per 10 grams.

The government on Wednesday sharply hiked import duty on gold and silver to 15 per cent from 6 per cent earlier to discourage purchase and trim non-essential imports in the backdrop of a ballooning import bill amid the West Asia crisis.

Also, import duty on platinum has been raised to 15.4 per cent from 6.4 per cent. Consequential changes have also been made to other items such as gold/silver dore, coins, findings, etc. The new duties are effective from Wednesday.

The duty hike follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s clarion call for curbs on gold purchases, along with other austerity measures, to reduce avoidable foreign-exchange expenditure.

Local traders said the actual impact of the higher levy would play out over the coming days once the increased duty begins reflecting in purchase bills.

“The recent hike in India’s gold import duty is likely to raise local prices and temporarily dampen physical demand. However, investors should not view this as a reason to panic. Gold continues to hold its appeal as a safe-haven asset, particularly in times of global uncertainty and domestic currency pressures,” Hareesh V, Head of Commodity Research, Geojit Investments Ltd, said.

A weak rupee also inflated the prices of precious metals, analysts said. The rupee dropped to a low of 95.80 against the US dollar amid concerns over forex outflows and high crude oil prices.

India is the world’s second-largest consumer of precious metals, and prices have rallied in recent months amid an unabated rise in demand, including for investment purposes. Gold is India’s second-largest commodity import after crude oil, and rising purchases have added to foreign-exchange outflows, pressuring the rupee to record lows.

The Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council cautioned that raising gold import duty does not curb imports but inflates prices.

Jewellery retailers stated that imposing quantitative restrictions on gold and silver imports, rather than raising import duties, would be a more effective way to curb the country’s current account deficit.

Brent crude traded above the USD 107 per barrel level in global markets on Wednesday.

However, in the overseas markets, Spot gold slipped by 0.3 per cent to USD 4,700.86 per ounce while silver gained 1 per cent to USD 87.45 per ounce.

Kupwara, May 13: The Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha today visited Vibrant Village Trehgam in Kupwara. During his visit, the Lieutenant Governor inaugurated and laid foundation stones for various projects. He also discussed needs and concerns of the villagers.

Addressing a public gathering, the Lieutenant Governor said that under the leadership of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, Government of India is fully committed to the all-round development of border villages.

He said that it is central government’s commitment to ensure that every child of Trehgam receives the same quality education available in J&K’s cities.

I want farmers here to access superior seeds, reliable irrigation, and strong market linkages. Trehgam has made remarkable strides in self-employment, with 205 self-help groups and 85 units under Mission Youth already operational. The revival of the historic Sharda Temple in Teetwal has breathed new life into tourism sector. In 2018-19, only 6,900 tourists visited Kupwara, however, in 2024-25, that number surged to 3,77,000. I’m confident that in the next one or two years, every border village will script its own story of prosperity,” the Lieutenant Governor said.

The Lieutenant Governor recalled that he had visited Machil on 5th October, 2020, and Keran and Machil areas were connected with Grid Power after 70 years of waiting.

“At that time, reliable power reached about 70% of families in Kupwara’s other villages. In just four years, we have extended it to nearly 95% of households. Telecom connectivity in border villages now stands at 88%. Concerned officials should ensure 100% coverage by the end of this year. Every family in border villages is serving the nation, and that service deserves honor in a transformed quality of life. Through PMGSY and PWD, we have already provided all-weather roads to 15 out of 16 Vibrant Villages in the past. Funding for the last one has arrived from the central government, and work will commence soon. We had planned grid power for every household in all 16 Vibrant Villages and so far 95% saturation has been achieved,” the Lieutenant Governor said.

The Vibrant Village Phase-2 program outlines three key pillars for holistic growth. First, securing livelihoods by launching new cooperative societies, self-help groups, tourism circuits, and cottage industries, especially empowering women and youth. Second, ensuring physical and digital connectivity to every Vibrant Village, while building strong educational infrastructure. Third, ensuring full saturation of all central government and UT administration schemes. The infrastructure focuses on 4 thematic areas- all-weather road connectivity, telecom, television access, and electrification.

The Lieutenant Governor said through a Whole of Government Approach, officials should dedicate themselves to achieve the target and link villages like Trehgam to the national mainstream.

The Lieutenant Governor highlighted that the administration is looking beyond the government schemes and programmes to create sustainable opportunities for the youth of the villages like Trehgam.

LG Manoj Sinha joins Nasha-Mukt Jammu Kashmir Campaign in Kupwara

LG Manoj Sinha joins Nasha-Mukt Jammu Kashmir Campaign in Kupwara

Srinagar, May 13: The Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha, today joined ‘Nasha-Mukt Jammu Kashmir Campaign’ Padyatra in Kupwara. The Lieutenant Governor also addressed a public gathering.

The Lieutenant Governor said that over the past 32 days, civil and police administration struck a devastating blow to the entire drug smuggling ecosystem and this people’s movement is transforming into a revolution against narcotics.

“Our consistent action is crippling narco-terrorist networks. Properties worth crores have been seized, assets confiscated, and passports of 15 smugglers recommended for cancellation. Over 730 smugglers and peddlers have been arrested,” the Lieutenant Governor said.

The Lieutenant Governor stated that at the start of this campaign in April, many doubted the possibility of a mass movement against drugs and underestimated the strength of an awakened public and the impact of determined governance with citizen support.

“With people’s participation and massive support across the Union Territory, a truly organic movement has emerged across villages, urban neighborhoods, schools, colleges, and the streets of Jammu Kashmir.

This fight against drugs is a long one. For decades, people in Jammu Kashmir saw drugs and terrorism as separate threats. But they are not two problems but they are the two heads of the same snake. One head makes money through drugs while the other uses that money to fuel terrorism. Our terrorist neighbor is involved in financing terror through drug smuggling, turning both drugs and money against innocent Kashmiris,” the Lieutenant Governor said.

The Lieutenant Governor further observed that the drug smuggling is destroying families and communities and it is providing terror groups their oxygen. He said by dismantling drug smuggling networks, the administration is cutting the lifeline that feeds the fire of terror.

“In Kupwara and Handwara areas combined, 28 drug smugglers are now behind bars. I want to urge our police officers, the soldiers guarding Kupwara’s borders, and the Anti-Narcotics Task Force warriors that not a single guilty should escape. As a border district, Kupwara must stay extra vigilant and take the harshest action against drug smugglers,” the Lieutenant Governor said.

It is pertinent to mention that every police station in Kupwara has been directed to gather full details on active drug smugglers and peddlers in their areas and launch decisive action within the next 68 days.

The Lieutenant Governor also urged citizens of Kupwara to participate in awareness drive. He also emphasized on rehabilitation and asked the officers and stakeholders to treat drug addicts as a victim trapped in the dark web of narcotics.

“The drug addicts need our compassion. They are our responsibility. We have to support every young man and woman seeking counseling or treatment. We must ensure they return to society’s mainstream. Senior officials must ensure swift action on every complaint and tip coming through the Manas portal and toll-free number. This has to be done with commitment. Every citizen of Kupwara must remember that we will reach every young person extending a hand for help. Together, we will dismantle the drug smuggling networks, free our youth from addiction’s clutches, and reconnect them to the path of progress,” the Lieutenant Governor said.

The Lieutenant Governor challenged those criticizing ‘Nasha-Mukt Jammu Kashmir Abhiyan’ and said that they should name just one innocent person who was unfairly targeted and effective action will be taken. He said if anyone is trying to protect drug smugglers, we must ask ourselves should they face consequences or not? The Lieutenant Governor said that people of Jammu Kashmir are very clear and firm and they want stringent action against drug smugglers and when the people unite, no force can stop us.

“In the days ahead, our crackdown against drug smuggling network will grow tougher and more powerful. The women of Dardpora village had met and they shared how drug smuggling funded weapons that slaughtered their families. That’s why I say it loud and clear that drug traffickers and terrorists are inseparable partners in crime,” the Lieutenant Governor said.

On the occasion, the Lieutenant Governor unveiled the trophies of Kupwara Forest League by Forest Department and Youth Service and Sports’s Volleyball Championship under Nasha Mukt J&K Abhiyan.

He also felicitated the winner of reel making competition on drug abuse.

NIA arrests Hizbul Mujahideen-linked ‘narco-terrorist’ after securing his extradition from Portugal

NIA arrests Hizbul Mujahideen-linked ‘narco-terrorist’ after securing his extradition from Portugal

New Delhi, May 13: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested wanted narco-terrorist Iqbal Singh alias Shera after successfully securing his extradition from Portugal following sustained diplomatic and legal efforts, officials said in a press release.

“Mastermind in a major Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM) terror financing case, Shera was brought to India today following the due legal process. He was taken into custody by an NIA team at the Delhi airport immediately on his arrival from Portgual, to where he had absconded in 2020. His successful extradition and arrest come as a major shot in the arm for NIA’s fight against Pakistan-backed narco and cross border terrorism.” an official spokesperson said in a statement

The arrested fugitive had a non-bailable warrant of arrest (NBW) against him in the case RC-23/2020/NIA/DLI (HM Narco-Terror Module) since October 2020. An Interpol Notice had also been in place for his arrest since June 2021, the statement said.

In its investigation in the case, NIA had found Shera to be a key conspirator and handler of an India-based narco-terror module engaged in smuggling heroin from Pakistan. A native of Amritsar in Punjab, Shera had masterminded the conspiracy involving smuggling of narcotics from Pakistan into the border state. He had coordinated and overseen the trafficking and distribution of the smuggled drugs, and channelised the proceeds through hawala networks to Pakistan and Kashmir based operatives of HM to facilitate terror activities, it said.

To carry forward the anti-India narco terror conspiracy, Shera had formed a terror gang and operated a Punjab-based network of associates engaged in the trafficking of large quantities of heroin, collection of sale proceeds, and transfer of funds to handlers and terror operatives. He had maintained closed links with Pak-based HM terror operatives.

The case was originally registered by Punjab Police following the arrest of an HM overground worker, identified as Hilal Ahmed Shergojri. The police had also recovered
Rs. 29 lakhs of drug proceeds from the possession of Hilal – a close aide of deceased terrorist commander Riyaz Ahmed Naikoo. Further investigation had led to the recovery of another Rs. 32 lakhs as narco terror proceeds from various Punjab-based members of the terror gang.

NIA, after taking over the case, had launched massive efforts to dismantle the module and secure Shera’s extradition. Further investigation in the case is continuing.

Pakistan receives USD 1.3 bn loan from IMF: Central bank

Pakistan receives USD 1.3 bn loan from IMF: Central bank

Islamabad, May 13: Pakistan has received USD 1.3 billion from the International Monetary Fund under two separate ongoing financing arrangements, the central bank said on Wednesday.

Funding was secured on Tuesday through separate International Monetary Fund (IMF) programmes, split between the Extended Fund Facility (EFF) and the Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF), aiming to stabilise Pakistan’s external payments and help it fight climate-related hazards.

According to the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), the IMF had approved the disbursement of USD 1.1bn under the EFF and around USD 220 million under the RSF.

This is the part of the fund agreed in September 2024 to provide USD 7 billion over a period of 37 months under EFF, while it decided to provide USD 1.4 billion under RSF.

“The IMF Executive Board completed the third review under the EFF in its meeting held on May 8 and approved the disbursement of Special Drawing Rights (SDR) 760 million for Pakistan,” the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) said in a post on X.

“Furthermore, the IMF Executive Board has also approved the disbursement of the second tranche of SDR 154 million under the Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF),” it said.

“Accordingly, SBP has received SDR 914 million (equivalent to about USD 1.3 billion) under the EFF and RSF on May 12 from the IMF,” it said.

The bank noted the amount will update the country’s foreign exchange reserves for the week ending May 15.

Last week, the executive board of the IMF agreed to provide Pakistan with about USD 1 billion under the EFF and about USD 210 million under the RSF.

The country has so far received a USD 4.5 billion loan from the IMF against two debt packages totalling USD 8.4 billion.

The IMF approval came after the government showed better performance against fiscal and monetary targets. Still, there were divergent views about the path during the second half of this fiscal year.

This provides crucial support to Pakistan, which depends on the fund to improve its foreign reserves.
