Air India crash new details: Pilots’ last conversation

Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu assures "fair and thorough" investigation into Ahmedabad plane crash

Srinagar, July 17: A cockpit voice recording from the Air India flight that crashed last month in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, suggests that the aircraft’s Captain may have intentionally cut off fuel supply to the engine, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal.

The recording reportedly captures the first officer questioning the Captain’s decision to move the engine switches to the “cutoff” position shortly after takeoff. While the first officer appeared alarmed and expressed panic, the Captain remained composed throughout the exchange, the report notes. The aircraft involved was a Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu said last week that the report is only based on preliminary findings and “one should not jump to conclusions” till the final report is released.

“I don’t think we should jump to any conclusions over this. I believe we have the most wonderful workforce of pilots and crew in the whole world. I have to appreciate all the efforts the pilots and crew of the country are putting, they are the backbone of civil aviation. They are the primary resource of civil aviation. We care for the welfare and well-being of the pilots, too. So let us not jump into any conclusions at this stage and wait for the final report,” he said.

Mr Naidu added, “There are technicalities involved. It will be very premature to comment on the report. The preliminary has come in, but we have to wait for something concrete to come in.”

The details in the preliminary report suggest it was the captain who turned off the switches, the Wall Street Journal says, citing people familiar with the matter, US pilots and safety experts tracking the probe. “The report didn’t say whether turning off the switches might have been accidental or deliberate,” says the US publication.Bottom of Form

Syria condemns Israeli strikes in Damascus, calls for UN action

Damascus, July 17: Syria condemned the Israeli airstrikes that struck government buildings in the capital Damascus, calling them a “blatant violation” of national sovereignty and international law.

In a statement released by the foreign affairs authorities on Wednesday, Syria said the strikes targeted “civilian infrastructure and government institutions” in Damascus and surrounding areas, leaving several civilians, including women and children, injured and causing extensive material damage.

The statement said the attacks reflect Israel’s “systematic policy of escalation” and its ongoing efforts to destabilise Syria and the wider region, describing them as a clear breach of the United Nations Charter and international humanitarian law.

“Syria holds Israel fully responsible for this dangerous escalation,” the statement read, adding that Syria will exercise its legitimate right to self-defence by all means permitted under international law.

The statement also called on the United Nations and the international community, including the Security Council, to condemn the repeated Israeli strikes on Syrian territory and to take “urgent and decisive measures” to curb what it called Israel’s repeated violations.

Later Wednesday, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres issued a statement condemning the Israeli strikes, reports Xinhua news agency.

“The Secretary-General further condemns Israel’s escalatory airstrikes on Sweida, Daraa and in the centre of Damascus, as well as reports of the IDF’s redeployment of forces in the Golan,” Guterres’s spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in a statement.

The strikes came as Israel launched a series of raids targeting Syrian army positions in Damascus and Sweida, amid ongoing violence between Druze militias, Bedouin fighters, and Syrian government forces in southern Syria.

“Very close to a deal with India…we’re in negotiation”: US President Trump

Trump tells BBC he is 'disappointed but not done' with Putin, backs NATO and UK ties

Washington DC, July 17: US President Donald Trump on Wednesday hinted at reaching a new trade deal with India soon. While adding “maybe”, he said that currently the US is in negotiations with India.

Trump, while speaking to reporters during a bilateral meeting with Bahrain’s Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, emphasised that August 1 will be a significant day, when a lot of money will come into his country.

“… We’ve brought in over $100 billion. The tariffs haven’t kicked in significantly, except for automobiles and steel. August 1st is when a very substantial money comes into our country. We’ve made deals with numerous places. We had one yesterday,” Trump said.

“We have another one (deal) coming up, maybe with India… We’re in negotiation. When I send out a letter, that’s a deal… The best deal we can make is to send out a letter, and the letter says that you’ll pay 30%, 35%, 25%, 20%… We have some pretty good deals to announce… We’re very close to a deal with India where they open it up,” Trump added.

The US President on Tuesday said the United States is working on a deal that gives it access to the Indian markets. He also announced a new trade deal with Indonesia, after which the latter will face a reduced tariff rate of 19 per cent.

Announcing progress on the India part, Trump stated, “We’re going to have access into India. And you have to understand, we had no access into any of these countries. Our people couldn’t go in. And now we’re getting access because of what we’re doing with the tariffs.”

The ongoing bilateral trade talks (BTA) negotiations by India and the United States (US) are progressing as per the decisions of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump, said the government officials on Tuesday.

“Our team is back in the US for carrying out the fifth round of negotiations on the bilateral trade agreement, so that agreement is progressing as per the decisions of our leaders and as per the terms of reference decided between the two countries,” the government officials told ANI.

Trump meets Gulf leaders at White House following Israeli strikes on Syria

Trump meets Gulf leaders at White House following Israeli strikes on Syria

Washington, July 17: President Donald Trump hosted a pair of Arab Gulf leaders at the White House as violence between Israel and Syria renewed doubts about his pledge to impose peace on the Middle East.

Trump held a meeting in the Oval Office with Bahrain’s crown prince and dined privately with Qatar’s prime minister on Wednesday.

The Republican president has lavished attention on the Gulf, a wealthy region where members of his family have extensive business relationships. He has already visited Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates on the first foreign policy trip of his second term.

With little progress to share on the region’s most intractable problems, including the war in Gaza, Trump was more focused Wednesday on promoting diplomatic ties as a vehicle for economic growth.

“Anything they needed, we helped them,” Trump said in the Oval Office while meeting with Bahrain Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa. “And anything we needed, they helped us.”

Bahrain is a longtime ally that hosts the US Fifth Fleet, which operates in the Middle East.

Like other Arab leaders, Al Khalifa was eager to highlight the lucrative potential of diplomatic ties with the US, including USD 17 billion of investments.

“And this is real,” he said. “It’s real money. These aren’t fake deals.”

According to the White House, the agreements include purchasing American airplanes, jet engines and computer servers. More investments could be made in aluminium production and artificial intelligence.

Bahrain’s king, the crown prince’s father, is expected to visit Washington before the end of the year. An important part of the relationship will be an agreement, signed on Wednesday, to advance cooperation on civilian nuclear energy.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, the prime minister of Qatar and a member of the country’s ruling family, was at the White House for a private dinner with Trump on Wednesday evening.

Trump visited Qatar during his trip to the region, marvelling at its palaces and stopping at the Al Udeid Air Base, a key US military facility.

The base was targeted by Iran after the US bombed the country’s nuclear facilities. One ballistic missile made impact, while others were intercepted.

Trump wants to use a luxurious Boeing 747 donated by Qatar as his Air Force One because he’s tired of waiting for Boeing to finish new planes. However, the arrangement has stirred concerns about security and the ethics of accepting a gift from a foreign government.

Aaron David Miller, who served as an adviser on Middle East issues to Democratic and Republican administrations, said “the Gulf represents everything that Trump believes is right about the Middle East”.

“It’s rich, it’s stable, it’s populated by authoritarians with whom the president feels very comfortable,” he said.

The fighting in Syria began with clashes between Sunni Bedouin tribes and Druze factions in the country’s south. Government forces intervened, raising alarms in Israel, where the Druze are a politically influential religious minority.

On Wednesday, Israel launched strikes in the Syrian capital of Damascus. A ceasefire was later announced, but it was unclear if it would hold.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who was in the Oval Office for Trump’s meeting with the crown prince of Bahrain, said the fighting was the result of “an unfortunate situation and a misunderstanding.” He said “we think we’re on our way to a real de-escalation” that would allow Syria to “get back on track” to rebuilding after years of civil war.

Despite an international outcry over its punishing military operations in Gaza, Israel has successfully weakened its enemies around the region, including Hezbollah and Iran.

“There’s a growing concern that Israel unleashed…has been a bigger sense of unpredictability,” Brian Katulis, a senior fellow at the Middle East Institute, said.

He also warned that “there’s still no game plan to deal with the loose ends of Iran’s nuclear programme and its other activities in the region”, such as support for the Houthis.

177 security personnel committed suicide in Chhattisgarh since 2019: Govt

0

Raipur, Jul 17: As many as 177 security personnel, including nearly 40 from paramilitary forces deployed in Chhattisgarh, committed suicide in the state in the last six-and-a-half years, Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma has informed the assembly.

Family, personal issues and health grounds were among the reasons responsible for these suicides, police investigations have found.

In a written reply to a question by senior BJP MLA Ajay Chandrakar, Deputy CM Sharma, who holds the home portfolio, informed the House on Wednesday about cases of suicide by security personnel and murders committed by them.

As per the reply, 177 security personnel committed suicide in the state between 2019 and June 15, 2025.

Of them, 26 personnel belonged to the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), five to the Border Security Force (BSF), three to the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and one each to the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and Tripura State Rifles, it said.

The other personnel who committed suicide belonged to different wings of the state police, including the Chhattisgarh Armed Force, Special Task Force, and Home Guard, the reply said.

The CRPF, BSF and ITBP have been extensively deployed in the state for anti-Naxal operations.

According to the government document, 25 security personnel committed suicide in 2019, 38 in 2020, 24 in 2021, 31 in 2022, 22 in 2023, 29 in 2024 and 8 in 2025 (till June 15).

During the last six-and-a-half years, 18 security personnel, including those belonging to paramilitary forces, were involved in incidents of murder. These incidents included a few fratricides in which jawans opened fire on their colleagues.

The written reply by Deputy CM Sharma further stated that upon occurrence of an incident (of suicide/murder by security personnel), investigations are conducted by registering a case with police. During investigation, statements of departmental officers/employees, family members of the deceased and other witnesses are taken in pursuant of further action.

In the investigation of such cases, it has been found that officers/employees mainly commit suicide/murder due to family, personal issues, addiction to alcohol, health reasons and sudden anger, the government reply said.

All Superintendents of Police/Commanders have been carrying out welfare activities like counselling by psychiatrists regarding family problems, depression and mental stress among their subordinate police officers/employees.

The seniors are also providing group counselling, giving regular leave and organising yoga and cultural programmes, among other events, for their subordinates, it said.

Police bank facility has been provided at district/battalion level to deal with financial problems. Motivational sessions are organised for de-addiction and alcohol addicts are encouraged to get treatment in rehabilitation centres, according to the reply.

Officers/employees from constable to inspector level are paid 13 months salary every year. A grievance register is maintained at every police station and company level to address problems of employees. District SPs/Commanders regularly listen to grievances of employees and try to resolve them, it said.

During inspections, senior officers also listen to grievances of employees and make all possible efforts to solve them. Every year, the state/district-level advisory committee holds a meeting to address problems of employees, the government told the House.

Every week on Tuesday and Friday, the Director General of Police listens to grievances of employees at Police Headquarters and resolves them as soon as possible, it added.

First direct Vascular Bypass (STA-MCA) for Moya-Moya disease successfully performed at SKIMS Soura

First direct Vascular Bypass (STA-MCA) for Moya-Moya disease successfully performed at SKIMS Soura

Srinagar, July 16: In keeping with its legacy of excellence the department of Neurosurgery SKIMS has achieved a milestone by successfully performing the first direct vascular bypass surgery between superficial temporal artery and middle cerebral artery (STA-MCA) in a patient with Moya-Moya disease.

Moya-Moya disease is a rare condition typically seen in East Asian populations, especially Japan, where arteries at the base of the brain become narrowed, leading to the formation of fragile blood vessels that resemble a “puff of smoke” (Moya-Moya in Japanese) on imaging. It reduces brain blood flow and increases stroke risk, especially in children. Symptoms include strokes or seizures and treatment usually involves surgery to improve the blood flow.

The surgical treatment for Moya-Moya disease is restricted to only a few centers in India. The surgical treatment of such patients made headlines in the past when such patients were treated by indirect vascularization techniques which included: Encephalo-Dura-Myo-Arterio-Synangiosis [EDMAS] with considerable success at SKIMS. However, the challenge with the present patient was that he was an adult and a candidate for the direct vascularization technique.

The patient was incapacitated because of multiple strokes. Upon investigations, he was diagnosed to have this rare disease which demanded an intricate surgery on his blood vessels to augment blood circulation to the brain

STA-MCA bypass surgery done for the first time in Jammu and Kashmir wherein a healthy blood vessel outside the brain (superficial temporal artery) is anastomosed with the diseased blood vessel (middle cerebral artery) in the brain, enabling immediate augmentation of cerebral perfusion was a complex procedure required in this patient.

The surgical team was headed by Dr. Nayil Khursheed, Professor of Neurosurgery and included Dr Farooq Ahmad Ganie, Associate Professor of CVTS and Dr Zulfikar Ali, Additional Professor of Neuroanesthesia. The surgery lasted for 6-hrs and was completed successfully without complications. The intraoperative flow assessment confirmed excellent patency. The patient was discharged in a stable condition.

This advancement reflects an ongoing commitment to provide state-of-the-art neurovascular care in SKIMS, and also marks a step forward in expanding the scope of high-end surgical interventions available to our patients in the valley. SKIMS looks forward to continuing to push the frontiers of care. The department aims to provide educational videos for other neurosurgical centers of the valley.

Director SKIMS, Dr. (Prof) M Ashraf Ganie congratulated the team and the department of neurosurgery for this ground-breaking surgery which has put SKIMS on the surgical map of select centers where such complex procedures are done with excellent outcome. (CNS)

Congress protests against proposed toll plaza near Akhnoor

Jammu, Jul 16: Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) Wednesday held a protest demonstration at Malpur near Akhnoor against the proposed toll plaza on Jammu-Akhnoor-Poonch highway.

Led by senior leader and former MLA Thakur Balwan Singh, Congress activists raised slogans against the BJP led central government for imposing huge taxes on the common people in Jammu region.

Ex MLA Balbir Singh; JKPCC chief spokesperson Ravinder Sharma; senior party leader Neeraj Gupta and block presidents Jang Bahadur Sharma and Chowdhary Babu Khan also joined the protest.

They demanded rollback of the decision to install a toll plaza at the site which, they alleged, “was against the norms and the interests of the common people.”

Speaking on the occasion, Balwan Singh and others alleged that BJP government at the Centre was fleecing the people of Jammu region by installing toll plazas at number of places against the norms and the guidelines laid down by the High Courts and the Supreme Court in this regard, as the highway was under construction at number of places between Akhnoor-Sunderbani-Rajouri and Poonch.

They charged the BJP with “looting the people of Jammu region by imposing toll tax at a number of places and charging toll even on the incomplete road projects.”

Balwan Singh questioned the BJP, its MPs and 28 MLAs for maintaining criminal silence over the plight of the people of Jammu after taking huge mandate on false promises to the people. He asked the people to make them accountable and answerable. He announced that the party would continue to raise a strong voice against such moves of the BJP government.

He also asked the people to join the Congress struggle for statehood for their own identity, status and protection of rights of their future generations.

Chief spokesperson Ravinder Sharma lashed out at the BJP government for, what he alleged, “looting the people in the garb of toll and other taxes against the norms. He opposed the installation of the toll plaza at the site as three tunnels up to Sunderbani were incomplete and the road was in dilapidated condition at a number of places.
