India ‘working along same line’ as US-Indonesia trade deal: Trump

Trump tells BBC he is 'disappointed but not done' with Putin, backs NATO and UK ties

New York, July 16: US President Donald Trump stated that India is working on a trade deal along the same lines as the one he announced with Indonesia, which will provide the US with greater access to the Indian market.

Under the deal with Jakarta, there will be a 19 per cent tariff on imports into the US, but none on exports from the US to Indonesia, he told reporters in Washington on Tuesday.

“India basically is working along that same line”, he said. “We’re going to have access into India”.

Negotiators from India and the US are working to reach a deal before the August 1 deadline Trump has set for making deals or face arbitrary tariffs.

While he has issued letters to several countries and the European Union threatening tariffs as high as 35 per cent if they don’t make a deal by that date, he has sent a similar warning to India.

It is not clear if he meant an exact duplication of the Indonesia deal, which would be a tough sell for India, or other levels of tariffs and other concessions by India.

If the bilateral trade agreement between the US and India under negotiation mirrors the Indonesian one, it would mean a 19 per cent tariff on India’s exports and none on imports from the US.

Trump also said that Russia’s President Vladimir Putin could agree to a peace deal with Ukraine before the 50-day deadline, which would spare India and others from buying Russian energy products from the 100 per cent punitive tariff he has threatened.

Asked by a reporter about the September 2 deadline, he said, “I don’t think 50 days is very long, and it could be sooner than that”.

Trump announced on Tuesday that he was taking strong action against Russia because it has so far refused to agree to a ceasefire in its war against Ukraine.

One of those is the imposition of a 100 per cent secondary tariff on countries importing energy from Russia making India and others collateral victims of the actions directed against Moscow.

The aim of the punitive tariffs on importers of Russian energy is to force them to stop the purchases and to cut off funds to Moscow, and to make the buyers put pressure on Russia to make a deal.

Meanwhile, the Republican Party’s leader in the Senate, John Thune, said that he was holding off on bringing a bill that sought to impose a 500 per cent tariff on Russian energy importers.

Trump had expressed scepticism about the need for such legislation when he could impose sanctions himself.

On the deal with Indonesia and a prospective deal with India, Trump said, “You have to understand, we had no access into any of these countries. Our people couldn’t go in. And now we’re getting access because of what we’re doing with the tariffs”.

He said that Indonesia has high-quality copper and rare earth minerals that the US needs.

PHDCCI-K Chairman submits reform plan to Deregulation Task Force

Srinagar, Jul 15: In a step aimed at improving the ease of doing business (EODB) in Jammu & Kashmir, A.P. Vicky Shaw, Chairman of PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI), Kashmir, held a high-level meeting with the Centre’s Task Force on Deregulation and Compliance Reduction, led by K.K. Pathak, Special Secretary, Cabinet Secretariat, Government of India.

The meeting was attended by senior officials, including Vikramjit Singh, Commissioner Secretary, Industries & Commerce, J&K; Khalid Majeed, Director Industries & Commerce, Kashmir; and Arun Manhas, Director Industries & Commerce, Jammu, along with other key stakeholders.

During the meeting, Vicky Shaw submitted a detailed set of actionable recommendations aimed at reforming Jammu & Kashmir’s regulatory framework and enhancing its EODB rankings. He emphasised the need for time-bound reforms with measurable outcomes to address persistent bottlenecks and create a more business-friendly environment in the Union Territory.

Among the suggestions presented were the establishment of a unified single-window clearance mechanism for all approvals and schemes, and streamlining of the compliance process—particularly easing the procedures for obtaining NOCs from the Pollution Control Board and expediting feasibility and power sanctions from the Power Development Department. Shaw also underlined the importance of ensuring the availability of developed industrial land, forming special purpose vehicles (SPVs) in industrial estates, and opening Town Planning Scheme zones in a phased manner. He further called for rationalising CLU charges and updating land-use classifications in the Master Plan.

On urban infrastructure and construction-related concerns, Shaw proposed increasing Floor Area Ratio (FAR) and ground coverage, introducing flexible Right of Way norms, and harmonising Master Plans across the region. He advocated industry-specific reforms such as unified national registration for construction equipment, exemption from redundant inspections for off-road machinery, single-window clearance for private educational institutions, and reforms to ensure fee regulation for budget schools. A state-level empowered committee was also recommended to steer education sector reforms.

Substandard trellis systems put high-density apple orchards at risk

Substandard trellis systems put high-density apple orchards at risk

Srinagar, Jul 15: A growing crisis threatens Kashmir’s high-density apple plantations as widespread use of substandard trellis systems raises concerns over long-term viability.

Orchard infrastructure across the region is increasingly being built with poor-quality galvanized iron (GI) pipes, often in violation of the IS  Standard 1239.  Many of these pipes are less than 1.5 mm thick and weigh under 10 kg, making them structurally unsound for high-density orchards designed to last up to 50 years, industry experts say.

GI pipes, as per Indian Standard (IS) 1239 standards, are categorised into three classes based on their wall thickness and durability. Class A, or light class, has a wall thickness of approximately 2.0 mm and a lifespan ranging from 5 to 8 years when buried in soil. Class B, known as medium class, features a thickness between 2.65 mm and 4.05 mm, offering a longer service life of 8 to 15 years. The heaviest and most durable, Class C, has a wall thickness between 3.25 mm and 4.85 mm, with an expected lifespan of 15 to 20 years under similar conditions.

Experts say most trellis systems in Kashmir use Class A or even lower-grade pipes, despite their unsuitability for structural support. In contrast, pre-stressed concrete poles (PSCPs)—used globally for similar plantations—offer a lifespan of over 70 years. “The trellis system used here may not withstand a  moderate wind”, said Ashiq Ali, Founder and Ailal Agro Private Ltd.  He said that in European countries, a robust trellis system is used that lasts for decades.

Quality Control Lapses

Market sources say many GI pipes used in orchards fall below the Indian Standard (IS)  weight benchmark of 5.5 kg per metre for 60 mm diameter. Pipes as thin as 1.5 mm are commonly sold, raising the risk of structural failure, especially in areas vulnerable to snow and high winds.

“Only Class C pipes with a minimum 4 mm wall thickness and 250 GSM zinc coating are fit for use in soil,” said a horticulture engineer who declined to be named. He said that the orchards with the current terries system could not last for  many years.

Farmers Left Unaware

Many orchardists say they are unaware of the quality standards and rely on suppliers and developers. “We trusted the supplier and the scheme,” said Bashir Ahmad, a grower from Shopian. As pipes deteriorate, the trained apple trees risk collapse, potentially leading to large-scale losses and rendering entire orchards non-productive. The government, however, has outrightly rejected the use of substandard GI pipes. During the last Assembly session, Tral MLA Rafiq Ahmad Naik moved a cut motion seeking an explanation from the government over the use of substandard GI pipes in high-density apple orchards. In response, the government said it had not permitted the establishment of such orchards.

Odisha student’s death triggers political storm

Odisha student’s death triggers political storm

New Delhi, Jul 15: The death of a 20-year-old B.Ed. student in Odisha, who self-immolated after weeks of alleged sexual harassment and administrative inaction, has ignited a fierce political row, with opposition leaders accusing the BJP-led state government of systemic failure and “institutional betrayal.” The ruling party has dismissed the charges as politically motivated.

According to The Times of India, the student succumbed to her burn injuries on Tuesday, three days after she set herself on fire outside Fakir Mohan (Autonomous) College in Balasore. She had earlier accused a senior faculty member, Sameer Kumar Sahoo, of repeated sexual harassment and had filed complaints with both college authorities and local police. However, no substantive action was reportedly taken. In a social media post, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi blamed the ruling BJP for what he described as an “organised murder by the system.”

“That brave student raised her voice against sexual harassment — but instead of delivering justice, she was threatened, tormented, and repeatedly humiliated. Those who were supposed to protect her kept breaking her… This is not suicide; it is an organised murder by the system,” he wrote on X as reported by TOI

Gandhi also slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his silence on rising crimes against women as quoted by TOI: “Modi ji, whether it is Odisha or Manipur – the daughters of the nation are burning, breaking, and dying. And you? You remain silent. India’s daughters need safety and justice.”

Echoing similar concerns, BJD supremo and former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik issued a strongly worded statement, accusing the BJP government of “planned injustice” and “institutional betrayal.” As quoted by India Today, Patnaik said: “It is even more disturbing to think how a failed system can take someone’s life. She did not lose her life solely due to physical trauma but also because of the negligence of the state government, which left her alone in her struggle.” Patnaik further urged the Odisha Governor to take immediate action against the college authorities and government officials who, he alleged, were complicit through their inaction.

In response, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan came out strongly against the opposition’s remarks, particularly targeting Gandhi. In a statement cited by The Times of India, Pradhan said: “The cheap politics played by Rahul Gandhi and Congress over the tragic incident involving Odisha’s daughter is extremely unfortunate. Turning a serious and sensitive matter into a political weapon reflects Rahul Gandhi’s petty mindset.” Pradhan maintained that the BJP and Prime Minister Modi have consistently prioritised women’s safety, and that the Odisha government is taking the matter seriously: “The strictest action will be taken against the culprits; no one will be spared.”

Regional media reported that the victim had repeatedly approached authorities with complaints, including meeting with the college principal just hours before the self-immolation.

Trump tells BBC he is 'disappointed but not done' with Putin, backs NATO and UK ties

New Delhi, Jul 15: In an exclusive interview with the BBC, US President Donald Trump said he is “disappointed but not done” with Russian President Vladimir Putin, following his announcement to send weapons to Ukraine and impose tariffs if a ceasefire isn’t reached within 50 days. Asked if he trusts Putin, Trump replied, “I trust almost no-one.” He said he had hoped for a peace deal “four different times,” but was let down each time. “We’re working at it,” he said, adding, “Then he’ll knock down a building in Kyiv.”

On NATO, which he once called “obsolete,” Trump said the alliance is now “the opposite of that,” praising members for boosting defence spending to 5% of GDP. “Nobody thought that was possible,” he said. Marking a year since he survived an assassination attempt, Trump said, “I like to think about it as little as possible.”

He praised UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer “even though he is a liberal” and said the UK is “getting Brexit straightened out.” On his upcoming UK state visit, Trump said he looks forward to “respecting King Charles” and ruled out a speech in Parliament: “Let them go and have a good time.” Trump also defended his immigration crackdown, saying deportations were underway.

We condemn derogatory remarks: Grand Mufti Nasirul Islam

We condemn derogatory remarks: Grand Mufti Nasirul Islam

Srinagar, Jul 15: Jammu and Kashmir’s Grand Mufti, Mufti Nasirul Islam, on Tuesday condemned the recent “derogatory remarks” made by political leader and Shia cleric.

Terming the comments “unbearable and intolerant,” the Mufti warned that such statements threaten the fragile fabric of religious harmony in Kashmir.

“These remarks go against the spirit of brotherhood and religious coexistence,” Mufti Nasirul Islam said, talking to reporters here. “We want to ask: what is the agenda behind such inflammatory rhetoric? If he wants to do politics, let him do it, but not at the cost of religion and peace. That will not be tolerated under any circumstances.”

The controversy erupted after a video clip surfaced online purportedly showing Ansari making “disparaging remarks” during a recent gathering.

The comments sparked outrage across Kashmir and beyond, prompting calls for public clarification and apology. Public figures are generally expected to exercise restraint in religious discourse, especially in a sensitive region like Kashmir.

Mufti Nasirul Islam said that several leaders had denounced the Shia cleric’s remarks. He named Aga Syed Hassan Mosavi, who termed the comments as “highly condemnable.”

The Mufti highlighted the historical moderation shown by the Shia cleric’s own grandfather too.

“His grandfather never did this. That is history. What is compelling him to act in this manner?” he said.

The Mufti said a committee has been formed to seek a formal explanation from the Shia cleric regarding his statements.

“We will not allow anyone, no matter how influential, to disturb the communal harmony we have nurtured for decades,” he said.

The Mufti said that they had formally approached the Director General of Police (DGP), urging action to prevent further escalation of tensions.

“We have asked the DGP to take a clear stand and ensure that peace is not vitiated by elements like this Shia cleric,” he said.

He called on New Delhi not to interfere in J&K’s affairs in a way that weakens the authority of the elected government.
