Kashmir Skaters win 8 medals in JK Roller Skating Championship

Srinagar, Nov 11: Kashmir’s speed skaters won eight medals at the J&K UT Roller Skating Championship 2025 held at M A Stadium in Jammu from November 4 to 7.

As per a statement issued on Tuesday, the championship was organised by the J&K Roller Skating Association, in which around 200 skaters across the UT participated. Armeen Sheikh of Mallinson Girls School won three gold medals, Mohammed Zaeem Kak of Kashmir Harvard won two gold and one silver medal, and Hooriyah Showkat of Green Valley won two silver medals.

All these skaters, for their outstanding performance, are likely to participate in the 63rd National Roller-Skating Championship 2025 to be held at Vishakhapatnam from 5th to 15th December 2025.

The statement added that Kashmir roller speed skaters raised concerns over the non-availability of a professional skating track in the valley and said this was the main reason Kashmir skaters bagged 8 medals while all medals went to Jammu skaters, stating that they had a proper speed skating track and ring there.

Over 1,400 Assistant Professors await overdue promotions in J&K Colleges

Over 1,400 Assistant Professors await overdue promotions in J&K Colleges

Srinagar, Nov 11: Over 1,400 assistant professors in Jammu and Kashmir’s Higher Education Department (HED) continue to await their first career placement to a higher grade—a promotion due to them nearly five years ago.

The faculty members, recruited in 2016-17 to strengthen teaching standards in degree colleges, say the delay has stalled their career progression and caused severe financial hardship.

In 2016-17, HED recruited 1,600 assistant professors across degree colleges in the Union Territory. According to established norms, PhD-qualified assistant professors are eligible for their first placement—from Grade Pay 6,000 to 7,000—within four years of appointment, depending on their joining dates.

For the 2016-17 batch, this advancement was due between 2020 and 2021. However, only around 200 faculty members have been granted the placement so far, leaving over 1,400 still waiting.

“Despite the passage of several years and thousands of written representations and reminders submitted to the department, the file remains pending with HED,” the aggrieved professors said.

The delay has created a cascading effect on faculty careers. The next placement—from Grade Pay 7,000 to 8,000, which many professors are now eligible for, cannot be processed until the first one is formally approved.

“The delay by HED in placement of eligible faculty members from Grade Pay 7,000 to 8,000, and the indifferent attitude of officers in the department, has left these professors ineligible for the second placement,” the faculty members said.

They accused HED officers of halting their career progression through administrative apathy, causing severe professional and financial stagnation.

“It is really disheartening and demotivating for us. The placement, which was due to us years ago—despite continuous appeals, letters, and meetings—there has been no concrete action from the authorities to resolve the issue,” they said.

“We have waited for more than four years for what was rightfully due to us in 2020. Our next placement is already overdue, yet our first one has not been approved. We feel completely ignored,” an aggrieved faculty member told Greater Kashmir.

The assistant professors have urged HED to immediately intervene and finalise the long-pending placement cases, ensuring fair and timely career progression for all affected faculty members.

When contacted, Director Colleges J&K Prof. Sheikh Aijaz Bashir said the files for career advancement have been submitted to the administrative department.

“The technical committee has approved the files and submitted them to the HED. We have also opened an online facility for submission of the files, if anyone is left out yet,” Prof Bashir told Greater Kashmir.

NIA takes over Delhi blast case

New Delhi, Nov 11: The Home Ministry on Tuesday handed over the Delhi blast investigation to the National Investigative Agency (NIA).

The blast occurred on Monday evening when a Haryana-registered car parked near Gate No.1 of the Red Fort Metro Station exploded, killing at least eight people and injuring dozens.

The NIA was handed over the case after Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday took stock of the investigation and the multi-state searches being conducted in the Delhi blast case, reiterating Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s resolve to bring the culprits to justice.

Chairing a meeting at his residence with top security officials, HM Shah issued strict instructions to officials to get to the bottom of the conspiracy at the earliest.

The meeting was attended by Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, Intelligence Bureau Director Tapan Kumar Deka, Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha and NIA Director General (DG) Sadanand Vasant Date, while the Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police (DGP) Nalin Prabhat joined virtually.

A team of more than 500 security officials has been formed to investigate the blast, while security has been ramped up across Delhi-NCR, with NSG commandos deployed at key installations.

More than 1,000 CCTV footage clips are being scanned by investigative agencies, which suspect that the car explosion could have been a suicide attack aimed at causing maximum damage, Delhi Police sources said.

Investigative agencies are also monitoring social media activity and collecting mobile phone dump data from several locations across Delhi.

According to police sources, dump data is being retrieved from all mobile phones that were active in and around the Red Fort area. This data may help identify phone numbers and communication links connected to the car bombing.

HM Shah directed the NIA, IB, and Delhi Police Special Cell to work in tandem, vowing, “No stone will be left unturned”.

High alerts have been issued in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Mumbai, with security around crowded public places and religious sites enhanced.
