People voting in large numbers to end injustice done by NC: PDP’s Budgam candidate

Budgam, Nov 11: People’s Democratic Party candidate Aga Muntazir Mehdi on Tuesday said people are coming out in large numbers to vote against the “injustice” done by the National Conference over the years.

Speaking with reporters, Mehdi said that election won by the National Conference earlier was “sentiment-driven,” but this time, the vote is a “protest against unfulfilled promises.”

“People believe that today’s election will deliver justice for the wrongs done to them. The promises made earlier were never fulfilled on the ground, and that has pushed voters to express their anger through ballots,” Mehdi said.

Referring to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s recent visit to Budgam for campaigning, Mehdi remarked that such visits “make no difference.”

“At this point, people have decided not to be treated as spare wheels or second options. Those who abandoned locals at the 11th hour cannot regain trust by merely showing up now,” he said—(KNO)

Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to chair a high-level security review meeting at 11 am in the wake of the blast on Monday evening that left nine people dead and 20 injured, sources said.

The meeting will be attended by Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, Director, Intelligence Bureau, Tapan Deka, Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha and DG, NIA, Sadanand Vasant Date.

DGP of Jammu and Kashmir Nalin Prabhat will attend the meeting virtually.

Raids are being conducted at multiple locations by Delhi Police and the national capital has been placed on high alert with strict vigil being maintained at the airport, railway stations and bus terminals.

According to sources, Umar Mohammad, a Pulwama resident and a doctor, was allegedly driving the Hyundai i20 car that was used in the explosion near the parking area of the Red Fort Metro Station.

Police sources said the first picture of the man driving the car that exploded near the Red Fort emerged in CCTV footage of the area. He allegedly had links to the terror module in Faridabad, where a huge cache of explosive material was seized, they said.

Preliminary findings by police suggest ammonium nitrate, fuel oil and detonators may have been used in the blast near the Red Fort that killed at least nine people, police sources said.

A police source said initial findings suggest a possible link between the Delhi blast to the Faridabad terror module where 360 kg of ammonium nitrate was seized. “Final reports are awaited,” the source added.

Police said CCTV footage of the car that exploded shows a “masked man” driving the car. Multiple teams have been deployed to scan CCTV from the vicinity of the Red Fort and adjoining routes, they added.

Following the blast, security across the national capital has been intensified, and vehicle checking at all border points has been intensified as well.

All vehicles entering Delhi, whether private or commercial, are being thoroughly checked and verified as part of heightened security measures, officials said.

India draws UNSC attention to Pakistan arming terrorists using drones, demands zero-tolerance

India draws UNSC attention to Pakistan arming terrorists using drones, demands zero-tolerance

United Nations, Nov 11: India has drawn the Security Council’s attention to Pakistan sending arms to terrorists across the border, including through the use of drones, and demanded that the Security Council uphold zero-tolerance for terrorism and its sponsors.

“India has suffered due to cross-border terrorism carried out using illicit weapons trafficked across our borders, including now through the use of drones”, India’s Permanent Representative P Harish said on Monday.

“The increase in the volume and sophistication of such arsenals reminds us that these groups cannot sustain themselves without being enabled, financed or supported”, he said.

Harish, who spoke at a Security Council Open Debate on Small Arms, did not name Pakistan, but it was clear who he was referring to.

“The Security Council must continue to uphold a zero-tolerance approach to terrorism in all its forms and manifestations and to those who facilitate, sponsor, finance or enable the use and movement of such weapons”, he said.

He said, “India has fought the scourge of terrorism for several decades and is therefore aware of the dangers posed by the diversion and illicit transfer of small arms and ammunition to armed non-State actors and terrorist groups”.

Sierra Leone’s Foreign Minister Alhaji Musa Timothy Kabba, who presided over the meeting, called for effective arms embargoes that are consistently enforced to prevent the proliferation of small weapons.

He said that “with an estimated 850 million small arms in circulation globally — about 650 million in civilian hands — the small arms trade is often cited as among the least transparent of all weapon systems”.

He said that it was imperative to prevent terrorists from getting arms.

Besides addressing the dangers from the nexus of terrorists and transnational criminal networks working together, exploiting porous borders, weak regulatory mechanisms, attention should be paid to “emerging threats such as craft-produced and 3D-printed firearms”.

Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, in his report to the Council, warned about the emerging dangers from terrorists making weapons using 3-D printing technology.

The Counter-Terrorism Committee’s Executive Directorate “has identified the manufacture of 3D-printed small arms and light weapons, parts and components by terrorists as an emerging Issue”, he said.

“Member States are encouraged to take steps to regulate, through national legislation, digital blueprints and the electronic sharing of designs and construction data for the illicit manufacturing of firearms and components”, he added.

Surprise inspection conducted at Rajouri jail

Rajouri, Nov 10: In a major move under the ongoing efforts to dismantle the terror ecosystem in Jammu and Kashmir, a massive surprise inspection and search operation was carried out on Monday at District Jail Rajouri, located in Dhangri.

The joint exercise was conducted by Jammu and Kashmir Police, jail authorities, and the CID-CI wing of J&K Police, in the presence of an Executive Magistrate.

According to official sources, the teams comprising Police, CID-CI, and CAPF personnel — with assistance from jail authorities — carried out a thorough inspection inside the jail premises to detect any suspicious activity or material. The jail currently houses several individuals booked or arrested in terror-related cases.

An area domination operation was also conducted in the periphery of the jail to ensure external security and to rule out any possible external linkages or threats.

It is pertinent to mention that in the last 72 hours, security forces have intensified their operations across Jammu and Kashmir as part of a larger crackdown on the terror ecosystem.

Multiple raids have been carried out at the residences of terror sympathizers, overground workers (OGWs), and associates of local terrorist modules operating from across the Line of Control (LoC).

Authorities said such measures are part of a sustained campaign aimed at curbing terrorism and its support networks within the Union Territory.
