CM Omar scales graveyard gates to offer tributes to martyrs

Srinagar, July 14: DMK President and Tamil Nadu chief minister, M K Stalin on Monday said the events unfolding in Jammu and Kashmir are a grim reminder of how far things have deteriorated in the region.

He expressed these remarks over police barriers aimed to prevent Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah from visiting the martyr’s graveyard in Srinagar to pay respects to martyrs of July 13, 1931.

Condemning the action, he said that from Tamil Nadu to Kashmir the Union BJP government is systematically stripping away the rights of elected state governments.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Tamil Nadu chief minister M K Stalin said: “At a time when there is a growing demand for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood, the current events unfolding there are a grim reminder of how far things have deteriorated”.

“The elected CM Hon’ble @OmarAbdullah is being placed under house arrest simply for wanting to pay homage to the 1931 martyrs and is forced to climb walls to do so. Is this how an elected Chief Minister should be treated?”.

He said, “This is not just about one state or one leader. From Tamil Nadu to Kashmir, the Union BJP Government is systematically stripping away the rights of elected State Governments”.

“If this can happen in Kashmir, it can happen anywhere, to any elected representative of the people. Every democratic voice must unequivocally condemn this,” he added on X.

Need to address de-escalation; competition should not turn into conflict: EAM Jaishankar in Beijing

Need to address de-escalation; competition should not turn into conflict: EAM Jaishankar in Beijing

Beijing, July 14: India and China should build on “good progress” in normalising the bilateral ties to address border-related issues including de-escalation, and it is essential to avoid “restrictive trade measures and roadblocks”, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Monday during talks with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi.

In his opening remarks at the meeting, Jaishankar said the bilateral relations can develop in a “positive trajectory” on the foundation that differences should not become disputes and nor should competition become conflict, adding the ties can be built only on the basis of mutual respect, mutual interest and mutual sensitivity.

The external affairs minister said India hopes “zero tolerance for terrorism” will be upheld at the upcoming meeting of the SCO, saying its primary mandate is to combat terrorism, separatism and extremism, comments seen as a reference to Pakistan’s support to cross-border terrorism.

Jaishankar met Wang hours after he landed in China on a two-day visit to attend a conclave of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). It is his first visit to the neighbouring country since bilateral ties witnessed a severe downturn following the Galwan Valley clashes in June 2020.

The external affairs minister also held talks with Chinese Vice President Han Zheng and conveyed to him that continued normalisation of bilateral ties can lead to mutually beneficial outcomes.

In the last nine months, India and China have been engaged in normalising their relations after ending the military face-off along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in October last year.

Though the two sides disengaged troops from the friction points, they are yet to de-escalate the situation by pulling back the frontline forces from the border. Each side currently has around 50,000 to 60,000 troops along the LAC in the eastern Ladakh region.

In his remarks at the meeting with Wang, Jaishankar also underlined the need to avoid “restrictive” trade measures and “roadblocks”, in an apparent reference to Beijing’s approach on export of critical minerals as well as issues relating to the supply of fertilisers.

“We have made good progress in the past nine months for the normalisation of our bilateral relations. It is a result of the resolution of friction along the border and our ability to maintain peace and tranquillity there,” he said.

“This is the fundamental basis for mutual strategic trust and for smooth development of bilateral relations. It is now incumbent on us to address other aspects related to the border, including de-escalation,” the external affairs minister said.

Jaishankar also repeated New Delhi’s consistent position that India-China ties should be based on “mutual respect, mutual interest and mutual sensitivity”.

“As neighbouring nations and major economies in the world today, there are various facets and dimensions of our ties. Measures towards normalising our people-to-people exchanges can certainly foster mutually beneficial cooperation,” he said.

“It is also essential in this context that restrictive trade measures and roadblocks are avoided. I hope to discuss these issues in further detail.”

The external affairs minister noted that “stable and constructive” ties between India and China are not only to each other’s benefit, but that of the world as well.

“This is best done by handling relations on the basis of mutual respect, mutual interest and mutual sensitivity.”

“We have also earlier agreed that differences should not become disputes, nor should competition ever become conflict. On this foundation, we can now continue to develop our ties along a positive trajectory,” he said.

Jaishankar said the bilateral relationship requires both sides taking a “far-seeing approach” even as he referred to a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Kazan in October last year.

Since our leaders’ meeting, the India-China relationship has been gradually moving in a positive direction, he said, adding “our responsibility is to maintain that momentum.”

“In recent times, the two of us have had several opportunities to meet at international events and carry out strategic communication. It is our expectation that this will now be regular and take place in each other’s countries,” Jaishankar added.

The external affairs minister noted that the two sides have marked the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations and appreciated the resumption of the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra after a gap of five years.

The external affairs minister also wished the Chinese side a successful SCO presidency and that India is committed to ensuring “good outcomes and decisions”.

In his meeting with Zheng, Jaishankar said an open exchange of views between the two sides is “very important” considering the “complex” global scenario.

Jaishankar travelled to China less than three weeks after Defence Minister Rajnath Singh visited the Chinese port city of Qingdao to participate in the SCO defence ministers’ conference.

The military standoff in eastern Ladakh began in May 2020, and a deadly clash at the Galwan Valley in June that year resulted in a severe strain in ties between the two neighbours.

The face-off effectively ended following completion of the disengagement process from the last two friction points of Demchok and Depsang under an agreement finalised on October 21 last year.

The decision to revive various dialogue mechanisms was taken at the meeting between Prime Minister Modi and Chinese President Xi in Kazan.

The Modi-Xi meeting came two days after India and China firmed up a disengagement pact for Depsang and Demchok.

BJP MLAs protest in Jammu over Urdu mandate for Naib Tehsildar posts, demand order rollback

In Karnah, BJP celebrates 11 years of PM Modi’s Govt

Jammu, July 14: The BJP legislative party on Monday staged a protest outside the Civil Secretariat and Assembly here, demanding the revocation of a government order mandating Urdu as a compulsory language for the Naib Tehsildar recruitment examination in Jammu and Kashmir.

The BJP has been opposing the move across Jammu for over three weeks, holding protests and rallies across at the district level. The part has warned of launching a region-wide agitation if the order is not withdrawn.

The MLAs of the saffron party arrived at the Civil Secretariat in the morning and staged a dharna, calling the order discriminatory and detrimental to the interests of Jammu’s youth.

Carrying placards highlighting injustice against Jammu’s youth, Dogras and other official languages of the union territory, the BJP leaders raised slogans against the government and National Conference leader Omar Abdullah, accusing the part of trying to create unrest in the region.

“We are staging a dharna against the decision to make Urdu mandatory for Naib Tehsildar examinations in Jammu and Kashmir, which is not acceptable to us,” BJP MLA and former minister Sham Lal Sharma said.

He said, “Kashmir-centric parties, particularly the National Conference, have been discriminating against this region for decades. This is a fresh example of it.”

Taking a swipe at the National Conference governments for decades-long discrimination against Jammu and its people, he said “we thought their discriminatory approach had changed after 2019, but it continues even today.”

Issuing such an order is a clear attempt to deny jobs to Jammu’s youth in the examination. It also discriminates against other official languages, he alleged.

“By making Urdu mandatory for such important posts in the government, the NC rulers have overruled previous provisions where knowing the language Urdu was not compulsory,” Sharma further said.

“We are holding protests to get it revoked. Youth are already on the streets protesting. The matter has been brought to the notice of the Lieutenant Governor as well and memorandums have been submitted through deputy commissioners, but nothing has been done so far,” he said.

Sharma said that 14 BJP MLAs had even met Chief Minister Omar Abdullah over the issue. “His apparoch was positive. Still, no action has been taken, and tomorrow is the last day to apply for the posts.”

“They are trying to create unrest in Jammu and are forcing us to go on agitation. All 28 BJP MLAs have started it with today’s two-hour-long token dharna,” he added.

The former minister further said that the party will soon announce its next course of action.

“We are warning the government not to play with the sentiments of the people of Jammu, who are fed up with the discriminatory attitude of Kashmir-centric rulers,” he said.

Other BJP MLAs also warned of an agitation if the Urdu language requirement is not withdrawn for the examination advertised by the government.

“Making Urdu a compulsory subject in recruitment for Naib Tehsildars is a gross injustice to the youth of the Jammu region,” BJP MLA Yudhvir Sethi said, adding that such injustice will not be tolerated.

The MLAs strongly opposed the decision and said it was a “deliberate attempt” to marginalise the youth of the Jammu region.

“This is a calculated move to deprive Jammu’s youth of equal opportunities,” Sethi added.

The imposition of Urdu, he said, reflects the divisive and exclusionary policies once pursued by the Omar Abdullah-led government.

“We will not allow the repetition of such injustice,” he said and added that the move is a clear violation of equal status accorded to multiple official languages, including Dogri, Hindi, Kashmiri, Urdu, and English.

Mamata Banerjee slams denial of Omar Abdullah’s martyrs’ graveyard visit: ‘Shocking, shameful, unacceptable’

Srinagar, July 14: All India Trinamol Congress chairperson and chief minister West Bengal, Mamta Banerjee today expressed shock over stopping chief minister Omar Abdullah by authorities from visiting martyrs’ graveyard in Naqashband area of central Kashmir’s Srinagar.

She questioned that what is wrong in visiting the graveyard of martyrs, and said barring chief minister Jammu and Kashmir from visiting the graveyard is not only “unfortunate”, but it also snatches the democratic right of a citizen.

She termed the incident “unacceptable”, “shocking” and “shameful”.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), West Bengal chief minister Mamta Banerjee said: “What is wrong in visiting the graveyard of martyrs? This is not only unfortunate, it also snatches the democratic right of a citizen”.

“What happened this morning to an elected Chief Minister @OmarAbdullah is unacceptable. Shocking. Shameful,” she said on X.

Earlier chief minister Omar Abdullah and senior party leaders visited the Naqashband Sahib shrine in Srinagar to pay tributes to the July 13 martyrs.

According to details, the chief Minister Omar Abdullah, NC President Farooq Abdullah offered prayers and floral tributes at the martyrs’ graveyard.

The party leadership, including deputy CM Surinder Choudhary, CM’s Advisor Nasir Aslam Wani, MLA’s Tanvir Sadiq, Ahsan Pardesi and other, participated in the visit.

The visit came a day after the district administration Srinagar denied permission for gatherings near Khawaja Bazar, including any congregational programme to mark Martyrs’ Day. The National Conference had earlier applied for permission to hold a commemorative event, which was not granted.

While the day was officially commemorated in the past, it is no longer a gazetted holiday while National Conference continues to observe the day independently.

CM Omar scales graveyard gates to offer tributes to martyrs

CM Omar scales graveyard gates to offer tributes to martyrs

Srinagar, July 14: A defiant Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday scaled the gates of the Naqshband Sahib graveyard to pay tributes to the 22 people killed by the Dogra army on July 13, 1931.

The dramatic scene unfolded a day after Abdullah and several leaders of the National Conference and opposition parties were put under house arrest to prevent them from going to the graveyard to mark Martyrs’ Day.

National Conference president Farooq Abdullah took an autorickshaw from the Khanyar crossing to the martyrs memorial while Minister for Education Sakina Ittoo surprised everyone by riding pillion on a scooty to the memorial.

Security forces had sealed the roads leading to the martyrs graveyard from both Khanyar and Nowhatta sides in downtown Srinagar.

As soon as Omar Abdullah’s cavalcade reached Khanyar in the old city, he got off his vehicle and walked more than a kilometre to reach the graveyard only to find the gates locked by the authorities.

The chief minister then climbed over the main gate and entered the graveyard premises to offer ‘fateha’.

His security men and several other National Conference leaders also climbed over before the gate was finally thrown open.

Lashing out at Lt Governor Manoj Sinha and the police for trying to stop him and his entourage from entering the martyrs’ graveyard, Omar Abdullah told reporters, “It is sad that on the instructions of the people who claim that their responsibility is the security and law and order, we were not allowed to offer ‘fateha’ here. We were kept in house arrest (on Sunday).”

“See their brazenness, they tried to stop us today as well. They also tried to manhandle us. Police sometimes forget the law. Why was I stopped today, when the restriction was for yesterday?” added the furious chief minister.

For all purposes, this is a free country, he went on to say.

“But they think of us as their slaves. We are not. We are servants, but of the people. I don’t understand why they destroy the law while in uniform,” he said.

Omar Abdullah said he and his party leaders foiled the police’s attempts to catch them.

“They tried to catch us, they tried to tear apart our flag but all of it went in vain. We came here and offered ‘fateha’. They think the martyrs’ graves are here only on July 13, but they are here all year round.”

How long could the L-G administration stop them from paying tributes to martyrs. If not on July 13, it could be July 12 or 14 of December, January or February, he asked.

“We will come here whenever we feel like,” Omar Abdullah asserted.

He also put out a post on X, reiterating his determination that he would not be stopped today.

“…The unelected government tried to block my way forcing me to walk from Nawhatta chowk. They blocked the gate to Naqshband Sb shrine forcing me to scale a wall. They tried to physically grapple me but I was not going to be stopped today,” he said.

July 13 is commemorated as ‘Martyrs Day’ in Jammu and Kashmir as a tribute to 22 people killed by the Dogra army outside Srinagar’s central jail in 1931. The L-G administration had dropped the day from the list of gazetted holidays in 2020.

Centre tells SC on Nimisha Priya’s execution in Yemen

SC to hear on Monday plea to save Kerala nurse Nimisha Priya from execution in Yemen

New Delhi, July 14: The Centre on Monday told the Supreme Court that “there is nothing much the government can do” to save Kerala nurse Nimisha Priya from execution in Yemen.

Appearing before a Bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta, Attorney General of India R. Venkataramani, the highest law officer of the Centre, submitted, “There is nothing much the government can do! Looking at the sensitivity of Yemen, the country is not diplomatically recognised. There is a point till which the Government of India can go, and we have reached that.”

The Attorney General (AG) said that the Union government did not want to complicate the situation by going public and was taking “utmost possible efforts” to rescue the Indian national from the gallows.

He added that a request was also forwarded to Yemeni prosecution authorities to suspend the execution of the sentence, but it yielded no positive results.

“We got an informal communication that execution would be put in abeyance, but we do not know if it will work out,” AG Venkataramani said.

The Justice Nath-led Bench was dealing with a plea filed by ‘Save Nimisha Priya Action Council’ seeking directions to the Union Ministry of External Affairs to use diplomatic channels to stall Nimisha Priya’s execution.

The plea, referring to Sharia law, stated that the death penalty could be negotiated with the payment of ‘diya (blood money)’ to the victim’s family.

Indian national Nimisha Priya, who has been sentenced to death for the murder of a Yemeni national, Talal Abdo Mehd, has been in prison for the last three years. According to media reports, she is tentatively set to be executed on Wednesday, following the approval of the Yemeni President Rashad al-Alimi.

Expressing its inability to pass an order to prevent execution in a foreign nation, the Supreme Court has posted the matter for the next hearing on July 18 and asked the Centre to file a fresh status report on the date fixed.

Meanwhile, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to “intervene with the authorities concerned” to save Nimisha Priya’s life.

The mother of Priya, Prema Kumari (57), has been tirelessly campaigning to secure a waiver of the death penalty. She has also travelled to Sanaa to negotiate the payment of blood money to the victim’s family. Her efforts have been supported by the Save Nimisha Priya International Action Council, a group of NRI social workers based in Yemen.
